Eliquis Causing Weight Gain And Tiredness?
(Newest replies first)
Updated
Hi, my name is Laura and I just started taking eliquis about 2 1/2 months ago and I have gained 21 pounds which is highly unusual for me. Usually my weight remains steady. I have also been incredibly tired all day long which makes work next to impossible. As well as not having any energy to spend with my children. I am only 30, and was put on eliquis due to having a second pe and cumaden not being an efficient way to control my blood. Is it possible the eliquis is causing these problems? My Dr. Just blows them off when I talk to him. It is very frustrating.
Re: LoriE (# 8)
Hey Lori, I have gained 30 pounds since I have been taking this. All the doctor says is that this is not a side effect. If you read the replies on this forum you will see how many people have gained weight plus tiredness and joint pain. I have to be n it for blood clots. There are other alternatives, I tried Xarelto but it did not agree with me. They will keep trying different ones if you want. He wanted to try one that was new and didn't know much about, I didn't want to be an experiment had enough problems. I don't eat much at all so I know its from the Eliquis.

Yes Laura it is. I gained 3@ pounds and didn't change my eating habits and can't get it off. Your doctor will tell you it is not a side effect or ask if you want go try another brand. They don't care it's not them there job is your safety but a large weight gain can become a problem also depending on your weight. I wish I had an answer since I can't be on Warfarin because of blood clots. Good luck
Re: Nikki (# 4)
I have been kn Eliquis for over 3 years because of blood clots after surgery and gained over 30 pounds. Have not changed eating habits Dr said this is not a side effect. I ca't get the weight off. He just wants to keep changing blood thinners.
Hello Laura. Like you as soon as I went on Eliquis I gained 20 pounds. My isn't water retention it is just weight plus fatigue and joint pain and I have to be on blood thinner. I had lost weight and maintained it for 6 years until I started taken this and I am not a big eater
Re: Nicole (# 12)
Are you still on Eliquis? If not, did you lose the weight after coming off?
Re: Lorie (# 24)
Did you lose the weight once you went off Eliquis?
Re: Terri (# 42)
I am sorry, I feel the exact same way, always bloated and i have tried so many different ways over the last year to lose the weight and I can't. I have blood clots, so I know this is the best medicine for them, but when I see my doctor on Wednesday I am going to switch to anything else out there because I cannot deal with being so uncomfortable all of the time. Hang in there and hopefully there will be new meds soon.
I too have been on Eliquis for 9 mths & I'm so depressed from putting on 10 kilos. I'm eating less calories, less food, hardly any sugar etc & exercising more. My stomach is bloated all the time. I've even cut back to only 2 healthy meals per day & still gaining weight. I also get put of breath when going upstairs since being on it. So depressing as my Doctor says I cant go off it as I have AF.
Re: Lori (# 9)
Hi Lori,
I have been on blood thinners since i had 2 PE in June of this year and the warfrin was making sick and i became allergic but they wouldn't listen until i said some thing. Now they put me on eliquis since July and i am very active always at the gym and eating healthy. i have had my down falls from being sick but i have never felt so swollen and gained so much weight since i been on blood thinners and eliquis has pushed my weight up more. Drs. think im crazy.
Re: Cissy (# 39)
Thank you so much! I believe I will try switching.
Re: Mary (# 38)
Mary - Yes it has, I have dropped three pounds already! I am not as tired as I was, my energy level is increasing daily and my legs and feet are no longer swelling.
Re: Cissy (# 37)
Can you let me know if the switch to Xarelto helps with the weight loss, please?
I had the same problem, weight gain, very tired, feet and legs swelling, and late for work almost daily. I just got switched to Xarelto. Praying this will be better for me. I was originally on Coumadin for PE and developed a blood clot in my thigh so was put on Eliquis. Hoping Xarelto will be a better choice for me.
Re: Jackie (# 35)
Hang in there. I have been on Eliquis since January and where as it is really frustrating and exhausting at tomes to carry around the extra weight that I cannot lose either, the other symptoms should improve. I work and I walk 7 miles or more per day and have good energy. Other than the weight and occasional reactions to food or drink, things have gotten better.
I started Eliquis almost 4 months ago. I have gained about 14 lbs. I am doing nothing different but my sister has been on it about a year and she has gained more than 60 lbs. My feet are swollen, not normal for me even though I am on a diuretic.
I am no longer experiencing the extreme exhaustion of the first two weeks, when I could barely get from one chair to another, thinking it was all in my heard because of the scary diagnosis of AFIB, however, I can tell that I just don't have the desire to the things I used to love.
I don't know what to do. The fear of having a stoke is worse than the fear of death, for me.
I've been on apixaban for a couple of years and have gained about 20 lb after being stable for years. I've always been able to lose weight fairly easily if my weight was creeping up, just by being a bit more disciplined. But that approach no longer works. Very frustrating.
Re: Mary (# 25)
So I dropped down to the maintenance dose and started to diet. I still cannot drop this weight.
Re: DarnMeds (# 20)
Been on this terrible drug Eliquis now for over 3 years! Now your G.P does NOT require you to come for renal function evaluations which I think is totally wrong. No check on a person taking such a drug therefore no notes being kept on side effects I think this is indeed bad policy. Can't say I've noticed any weight gain BUT I certainly don't sleep well say after 3 hours of going to bed, I am starving and my blood sugar is 0. I do know it's not diabetic related but I could eat a horse. One and a half hours after taking it I could eat for Britain then it settles down and repeats itself for the night dose. What I do notice is the constant yawning while taking it and that is very embarrassing. The biggest draw back on this medication is not being able to take anti-inflammatory drugs as I found out today I have spinal stenosis and really needed analgesia with an anti-inflammatory cried for hours in pain and have an appointment with a Private physio tomorrow. I have said before I think this type of forum should get together and demand that this company take on board all the side effects before it's too late.
