Yajahira,

The website treatmentmatch.org explains all so I won't go into all the details except to say that treatmentmatch is a site bringing people seeking treatment for opioid addictions with Suboxone together with Drs who have openings in their schedule for a Suboxone patient. That said I want you to be as informed as possible in that once you're treated for addiction with Subs, you'll have a 1% chance of getting treated with traditional Pain management specialists in the future. Treatmentmatch has a good rep with folks looking specifically for Suboxone treatment. Please let us know how things work out for you, Yaj. Good luck!

Keikee, you bring up an excellent point about those that receive Suboxone or Subutex not being able to find a dr that will manage their pain. Even patients that their drs have told them they were prescribing Suboxone or Subutex to manage their pain are having problems finding a dr that will treat their pain because they have a history of being prescribed a drug for the treatment of drug addiction and drug maintenance.

Their is a new medication that the FDA has approved for the management of chronic pain, but it is Buprenorphine, the name of it is Belbuca.

Anyone that goes to a Methadone Clinic won't be able to find a dr that will treat their pain. It does not matter what the dr tells you they are prescribing the Methadone for. Methadone Clinics are for the treatments and maintenance of drug addicts..

BL,

That is not a new medication it has been around for many years; the marketing or brand you mention might be but this drug also is an antagonist which would cause withdrawal in an opioid tolerant.

The result of what the CDC and FDA witch hunts are causing is just noise. The DEA has not changed regulations. Until this ACA is removed along with Odumma we as a group in pain will suffer.

P450Metabolizer, that is correct. Buprenorphine is not new, but it is being marketed under a new brand name of Belbuca and it is being marketed for chronic pain.

Unfortunately, the ACA won't be going anywhere. It does not matter who is elected President. If you don't believe me, wait and see. There are only a few things that the President Of The United States can do without the Congress and Senate.

JUANITA...Seems the attention has drifted away from you. I have not heard from you but wanted to ask if you are still looking for a doctor in Louisiana? If not post an answer to me and I'll help you out.

Posters,

Information is wrong. For years as a professional nurse I have referred patients in immediate need--death of physician or inability to obtain medication care due to relocation to go to a Methadone clinic for Methadone not these ADDICTION drugs.

Methadone is the best long acting medication for pain known to mankind. It is so powerful and the liver pass is so slow that it must be slowly increased. A pain patient in desperation might be denied in a Methadone clinic unless they allow that without finding a pain specialist they might become an addict for entry.

Any pain specialist who knows of such a patient would take them on whereas if you are hitting an addiction doctor for Suboxone you will not receive pain management.

A good pain specialist will utilize muscle relaxers and or benzos with opioids for they enhance pain control and are utilized frequently.

I hope this helps.

Catherina,

Valium is the best smooth muscle relaxer known in the medical industry. Please do not listen to negative posts such as those stating such nonsense.

P450...I guess there are no more good pain managers because I don't see Soma's anymore.

Paul, few pain drs will prescribe an opiate and valium or Soma any longer due to the rise in deaths when a patient was prescribed both of them. The FDA has been asked to put Warning on all Opiate and Benzodiazepine Labels. Valium is a smooth muscle relaxer and due to that it works well on muscles. But, the fact remains that few pain drs or other drs will prescribe valium with an opiate.

A patient can be prescribe valium for anxiety by a pcp or psychiatrist and an opiate by their pain drs in some circumstances. But, sometimes insurance companies will deny the opaite or the valium and they may or may not reverse their decision if it is appealed.

BL ..Been taking them for years until they cut out Soma's where I got most of my relief. But I don't abuse my meds so punish the people who do it right.

Paul,

I'd discuss it with your pain specialist if necessary. Valium is the best smooth muscle relaxer ever created and can be incorporated properly with an opioid to relax muscles contracting around ruptures and areas of DDD and stenosis. Sometimes it helps just to mention, 'Hey Doc I've had more difficulty ambulating or getting to sleep with all this muscle tightness in addition to the pain.'

I'd try it for you are a confident and self assured patient I can tell. Smile.

Catherina, I'm sorry to hear your hubs suffers neuropathy stemming from diabetes. Ouch! I don't think I read what part of the country y'all are in. You're searching a new Dr for him, right? Maybe we can put our heads together & find an old school Dr willing to take your husband's history of good pain relief, restful sleep & comfort PLUS the major cool fact he LIVED thru that combination of medications ALL those years! Please, tell us your area of the county.

Valium is used to boost the opioid pain medication for those with muscle contractions. Any other muscle relaxer has liver pass issues and should not be used for more than 3 months without liver enzyme evaluations. Some expert pain specialists will utilize instead of Valium other benzo's. This is acceptable.

Amphetamine and or Ritalin can also be prescribed for alertness with opioids. The only opioid that has a mood enhancing action is Oxycodone; all others marketed in America are straight depressant. Physicians for years have learned for example that adverse effects of drugs like Duragesic with anxiety attacks and impending doom could be offset with a prn of Oxycodone at patch change for example.

Hi BL,... I was a heavy alcohol drinker but always took my meds as prescribed without Alcohol and quit drinking. I haven't had a drink in over 3 years.. I was getting Norco with Soma and those two in combination really helped my pain and took them since 1995.. But of course there is always someone who has to abuse them and ruin things for people that really need their meds. Tell you the truth, I don't know why people want to take more Soma than prescribed. I've seen people that have overdone Soma and all they do is shake profusely, they can't speak, they can't walk properly. Basically cannot function at all. I just don't see how that can be pleasant. Also I know a girl that OD on opiates and Xanax but she took so many of them that it could be classified as a suicide. I just don't know why people want to get that blasted to where they are not coherent. I realize that tolerance plays a part but they should know their tolerance level. I also believe they don't want to prescribe Soma any more because it became a popular street drug just as quaaludes did back in the 70's and 80;s, I know many druggies and don't know anyone who has died from these. The combo of benzos and opiates...yes. But that was pure carelessness.

Paul, tolerance and high doses also play a part in the problems with opiates and drugs like Soma and Valium. Personally, if a patient isn't on a high dose of meds and has medical records to show that they have taken Soma, Valium, etc as prescribed with not problems in the past, I think a dr should try them on it again to see how they do. But, as I said earlier, there are very few drs that will prescribe that combination of med. A patient having a history of drinking, even if they have stopped, could also be a reason for a dr not prescribing that combination. Was your current dr aware of your history of drinking when he prescribed the Soma before ? If he was, it may be that he is listening to the warnings or it could be that he had a patient that had stopped drinking and started again and he was prescribing that combination and they ended up in the er or worse. Drs have countless patients and one patient can affect how a dr prescribes for others.

Paul,

As you know some years back it was known out here in Texas as the cocktail and certain pain doctors now out of business and with our current new Medical Board in Texas no one is prescribing liberally BUT these doctors would have pre printed prescriptions with the cocktail; NORCO, SOMA and either Xanax or Valium. I believe in your case a light dose of Valium (5 mg.) would give you superb muscle relaxation and not have the effects on the liver the muscle relaxers do within 3 months.

Awesome that you have not had a drink in 3 years it is truly great. As you know alcohol creates further pain for those with muscle disorders such as FM and neurologic disorders such as RSD combined with ruptures and stenosis booze can make you a train wreck. Most of us realize that drinking with opioids is not the way to go.

A good physician does not base his or her decisions on a group of people; they are to evaluate us one on one my friend.
