I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

I have taken both I'm prescribed the 30mg ir Adderalls and they work perfect, I've taken Adderall since I was 11yrs old , so they work the best they are orange oval pills ,sometimes I break them in half..the other stuff is worthless

In my experience with many drugs, ADHD meds included, the "brand" has as much chance of being the best manufacturer (for me) as any of the others. And, yeah, extended release is as likely as not to be more desirable than taking regular release several times.

So, if the generic is working for you, I wouldn't assume the "brand" will be better. It might be, but it also might be worse.

I am a 56 year old female that has been in therapy off and on since I was in the 6th grade. Never actually had any of my therapists care enough to take the time to diagnose my symptoms. So I started self medicating. I used street drugs off and on for 30 years.
I never felt like fit in anywhere but the drugs made me not care, or at least I was able to convince myself that I did not care. I continued rotating using therapy or using drugs.I have been giving everything from lithium to paxel. However I always went back to street drugs. The meds that therapist gave me caused me to have no emotions, I just didn't care about anything or anyone.
Recently when I was sick I showed up for my appointment with my new doctor. For some reason she just came out and asked me if I would mind talking with a therapist that just so happened to be at that office on that day. That day changed my life. I began seeing her weekly and one day I asked her why my doctor suggested I talk with her that day and her reply was that the doctor not only wanted her to talk to me but she wanted her to commit me to a mental institution. She told me that after talking to her that first day she trusted that I was no harm to myself or anyone else at that time.
I feel so blessed for that accidental meeting. After a few sessions with her she began having me fill out questionairs. And she would not really ask me questions but talk to me about my responses which lead to her diagnosing me with ADHD. However most insurance companies have this ” age out” for any drugs that are used for ADHD. It took 3 months for her to get the ok for amphatamin salts.
Due to bring blessed enough to find someone who cared and the amphatamin script I don't wake up wanting to just end it all and I make it through the day understanding that their is a reason that I have felt different, its because I am different. Pills may not teach skills but at least now I can stay focused long enough to learn about my disorder and educate the people in my life so that we can work together to make living with this mental disorder more accommodating for everyone.

I have been taking Adderall for years to help with depression/anxiety. My dose has not been increased since it was leveled out a few years ago. All drugs are dangerous. That is why you take them only as prescribed by your doctor.

What i have noticed for myself and my daughter actually with any and every medical issue i have i journal the day.from diet to the meds times taken my emotion and productivity. Not a book, but it allows me to get an idea what seems to help. Adhd meds are different for everyone.
Dosing has nothing to do with good or bad positive or negative its the away your body absorbeds .we are all different. I may need glasses to read , but you may need glasses for driving. If i wore your glasses i wouldnt be able to read anything. Tinkering with the meds is a norm most people dont get the right dosing or even the best med fro. The start. Maybe a cup of tea may help for a boost n the afternoon maybe an extra hour of sleep maybe you're eating more carbs. There will not be a continuous perfect day because you t ake meds. You are going to have some days better than others just like e all do.these meds are tools in our tool box. A hammer won't won't work well painting my wall. Google is a great place to get info. Pharmacists are a wealth of information. Good luck

I am a cardiac nurse. Amphetamine salts are speed. When you take any form of speed (amphetamine) you are going to feel anxious, jittery at times, your sleep may well suffer, you may experience temperament changes and lose your temper. You can experience irreversible cardiac events including heart attack and stroke because amphetamine is a very powerful vaso-constrictor - this means it will narrow and spasm your coronary arteries and other blood vessels can spasm shut completely so you have decreased blood flow, then clots can form which stop blood flow completely to your heart or brain. Liver failure and liver toxicity is strongly connected to these drugs and if your liver fails you are cooked. Be aware amphetamine is highly addictive and YES your physician KNOWS THIS. So why would a physician prescribe something this dangerous and addictive requiring monitoring and office visits? Gee if you could just figure it out?? Let me give you a hint - if you are scootin along in your life and NOT ON ANY DRUGS are you in the Dr's office? Is anyone making any money? The amphetamine class of drugs are so dangerous the FDA is considering black box warnings. NEVER take yourself off amphetamines suddenly because the side effects of depression are at rebound levels and can be fatal if you become suicidal. You absolutely can get off all the ADD type drugs, but you have to do it slowly. You see almost any drug you ever take will have serious rebound reactions when you get off them. Even stomach acid stopping drugs will have a rebound of severe stomach acid production if you get off them suddenly. With speed you can crash into deep depression up to and including suicide when you take yourself off of them so you have to go very slowly under the eye of a medical professional WHO CARES ABOUT YOU. So let's review: you have to be extremely cautious about your symptoms while taking amphetamine - and while getting off amphetamine, you have to taper very slowly off it under the watchful eye of a physician because you can rebound into deep depression. Let me promise you this - most drugs are dangerous, it doesn't matter who is giving them to you. Don't alter your mind. You need it to get through this life.

I am having the exact same issues!! Fatigue, irritability, migraines, heartburn, feel nauseas when I try to eat, and now have a bladder infection.

What you are saying is entirely inaccurate and rude. Adderall is most commonly prescribed to children and is not the first line treatment for narcolepsy but for ADHD. It helps people all over the country of all ages and I know of cases where it has helped to basically save lives of depressed/ADHD people who found their lives unmanageable before it. This is not a place for uneducated, closed minded judgement but for accurate advice and support. I really wish you would just delete your comment all together.

Hi im trying to find out the right combo that will help me out. I was diagnosed with ADHD. I also have other illnesses diabetic gestational then type 2 for 27yrs, fibromyalgia for 4yrs and the medication for this absolutely wears me down. For the ADHD I take 15mg generic Adderall as soon as I wake up to help wake me up then 75mg of Vyvanse later to help me stay focused but I still run out of steam by 3pm and I work an 8hr day 5 days a week. I go in for check ups once a month and talk with a GP and I also have a Therapist I was just wondering if about a better way to help me or just keep letting them balance the medication until it works.

I am a 75-year-old Woman that has been on Adderall different generic pills I've been using for about 25 years I can use only the time release there was too many ups and downs taking it 2 to 3 times a day my life has been a lot fuller and better because of it wish I would have known about it in my younger years maybe I would have done better in school and been more successful financially in my life I do not like to take any medicine and I never abuse any Adderall has been good to me

I don't understand why you all are jumping his case. I'm a 20 year old male and I take Adderall. He expressed his opinion and I feel he is entitled to it. Just like all you are. So before you jump the "bandwagon" do not and I mean do not discriminate against someone who is openly opinionated. Perhaps he feels drugs are bad and it's true some people who take the drug Adderall eventually go to drugs. They branch off. I know because my sister did. My friends did. But. Fortunately for me I was fine with the drug. For the most part that is of course.

Thanks for the brutal honesty! I mother of ADHD children. I have it. Dam genetics!! Because of ignorance that woman was exactly why prisons. Institution's, jail's. Unfortunately these places full of people who did not get diagnosed. I know for a fact. I will not let my children slip away into the world and self medicate. I personally know from my experience. My three daughters are extremely greatful to have a mother who did not ignore the signs. I am greatful for Adderall. Once my 3 girls could not succeed at school. Today with medicine they are working as nurses in these the three places I mentioned. Hell on earth. Thanks for your message.

I also have adult adhd and generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Without my medication I would not be able to function like a contributing member to society, and I manage it without abusing it. Ignorance is something that creates the stigma that everyone takes medication for the sole purpose of getting high or whatever. This angers me as well.

Celeste, Thank you for posting your info. About Generic Adderal. I have multiple Auto Immune Disorders and Narcolepsy along with several virus's that cause me severe exhaustion etc. no matter how much rest or sleep I get. My Docs put me on generic 10 mg. After 3 wks. of absolutely no help, I called and asked to try 20mgs. twice a day.( yrs. ago I tried Provigil and then Novigil and no help, so I've just been suffering for yrs.) so for approx. 3 wks. I have tried the generic Adderal and I am continuing to feel worse. I thot till I read your post that I was losing it. Every day I wake up and pray to God (YES there is a GOD) to guide me in the right direction and to find answers. Tonight I read your post, and I have hope to try a different medication,because my prayers were answered by God leading me here to your POST. ??

For those of you that say this ruined your life need to stop blaming and look in the mirror. Would you tell a child needing glasses not to wear them, would you tell a person going into surgery not to have a local, would you tell a person with pain not to take a pain pill. These are tools. For many they have changed lives. A small few it didn't work well or the person didn't dosage properly and the addict within came out sooner rather than later. If you trust these drug companies, you gotta ask yourself why we have a problem. THEY LIED THEY BLOODY LIED GOING THROUGH THE TRIALS TO GET THIS oxy on the market. It was sold as a drug for pain that only needed dosing every 12 hours and it's NOT ADDICTIVE. NON ADDICTIVE. SHOULD I STUTTER. THAT'S RIGHT. SO NOW 12+ YEARS LATER THESE COMPANIES ARE SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS WONDERING WHAT HAPPENED. THE ILLICIT DRUGS ARE CHEAPER FOR THOSE WANTING to chase that feeling, only to end up dead. Pharmaceutical companies are our biggest drug dealers/pushers. It's all about the dollar. Don't trust the doctors writing the scripts (they push what the reps toss their way with the free lunch) do your own research and talk to the pharmacy. Pharmacists are pretty talkative and they know far more than you may think. Every drug has pros and cons. Everyone. As for dosing adderall, well 60MG may be the "limit" but off script many go as high as 120mg to 140mg a day. It's not a matter of how much, it's how the body breaks it down and the years on it. Many can work with 5mg a day. Keep a log. Remember in real life we have good days and not so good. No pill will give you good everyday.
