Can You Take Benzos While You're On Suboxone? (Page 4) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've been seeing a lot of posts regarding taking benzos while on Suboxone. It is ok to take a benzo w/ suboxone - as long as you're taking the prescribed dosages you'll be fine. Now if you're taking 3 or 4 8mgs of Suboxone and say 5 or 6 Xanax that's not good, that's where the reported deaths have come from. I've been on Subs for 5 yrs. I've also been subscribed klonopin and am currently taking valium w/ it and it's fine. I'm on a low dose and only take what I am prescribed.

From 's personal experience (I have had friends die from doing this) most people die because they are taking suboxone and still trying to get high from the opiates. When they don't get high, they keep taking more, thus overdosing and that can only end in death. This is a question and answer place where people are asking for other people's personal experience. I think the person that answered the original question was going by his own personal experience and from what his doctor told him. Try not to be so hard on people. They is an enormous amount of information on the net as you others pointed out. He just wanted to know what your personal experiences had been. Just trying to keep the peace! :)
Novus medical detox in New Port Richey. Ijust came of off xanax 1mlg. And 170 mlg of methadone daily, but sometimes I would take xtra methadone up to 270. They depicted me in 12 days. I feel great but just lazy a little soar but flexeral and phenergen help for nausea and muscle spasms. $800 a day. Well worth it I was on meth gor 2 1/2 years. B4 that 3 more years with about 6 months break. I'm happy.
As a drug and alcohol counselor who works with a physician that prescribes suboxone and zubsolv, anybody who is on long term maintenance with suboxone is asking for trouble. Suboxone should be used in a reduction therapy program. Taking 8 mg or more of suboxone every day for multiple years is irresponsible on the part of the prescribing physician at best.
As far as incorporating Benzos with suboxone- if you want to risk death, keep telling yourself that certain benzos are "weak", or you have "a high tolerance" for them. Benzos and suboxone are a terrible combination at ANY level, and can slow respiration to fatal levels, especially if the patient uses benzos close to bed time, or if the patient has sleep apnea. Quit f***ing around in a blog site when it comes to these kind of matters!
I w ould simply be ,iohonest with your anxiety Dr and say you were very nervous and anxious about how they'd react, and you apologize for withholding that information from them. Tell the Dr that your Sub doctor is ok with it , perhaps even sign a release so that you the two doctors can speak about it if they need to.
All doctors have a way to pull up the current med school you're taking, you'd rather this come from you than from them finding out another way.
If you're apologetic enough, and say you never meant to "deceive" anyone- you were simply anxious and it got the best of you, and it will never happen again.
I've had similar situations happen to me before and I've found the majority of doctors are appreciative you came forth with the truth and they're quite understanding. But from here on out, Nothing can or should be withheld between the two of you.
Prepare notes beforehand so you can read from them while you're with the doctor- that helps you not get distracted and allows u to ask the doctor to be patient and just listen until you're finished. I've done that too- it helps.
Truly, IMO, honesty is the best way to handle these situations. You might be pleasantly surprised by how understanding your doctor actually may be.
Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine. Make an appointment for a consultation with the doctor and get it over with.
Best of luck my friend!
I have just started taking 12ml subutex and on 20ml of diazipam that iv bin prescribed for some time..im I to my fith day of sub titration.is diazipam blockin or inhancing mysweats..any help plz..
If your urinalysis is anything like mine, the test will show a positive for both Subs and Benzos. I currently take 8mgs of Suboxone (Subutex- the pills) & 4 mgs of Klonopin and they both show up on my test.
My Sub doctor prescribes both so it's not a problem. If you're trying to hide your Benzo usage then I'm afraid you're out of luck my friend.
In my 6 years of taking Subutex I've had 4 doctors who've been aware I've been taking both and it's never been a problem.
And if the question of whether I can give you my doctor's name is directed towards me, his name is Dr. Michael Mahl and he's located in Chandler, AZ.
Good luck my friend.
The problem here is the title of the tread and the misleading "blanket statement" is that you CAN take benzodiazepines with suboxone. True, some Drs will prescribe the 2 together but only on a case by case basis and the amount of Drs willing to do so is steadily decreasing. I think the main issue is that the vast majority of people looking up this thread for answers are NOT prescribed both meds under the care of the same physician, and most likely have received one or both medications through other means, otherwise they wouldn't be turning to the Internet to find answers as to the safety of this combination. I had a good friend take Xanax while being prescribed suboxone and he did not wake up. Needless to say this happens more often than it should when a person is taking these meds without properly being evaluated prior by their physician to take into account which type of benzo, which dosage, as well as suboxone dosage and body chemistry.
You can take your suboxone, but try changing to clonopins instead of xanax. Drs will prescribe that to get you off xanax.. Its safer and clonopins last longer than the other. 12 hrs vs 48-72 hrs.. Same effect.
My dad overdosed on methadone and xanax. Don't mix nerve pills with synthetic opiates. Please
Those who respond to this subject feel passionately about it, and that's fine. No, the majority of us- including myself- are not medical professionals. We're Suboxone/Subutex patients that are also prescribed Benzos for anxiety disorders, panic attacks, etc. And they are prescribed by our Sub doctors, and I'd like to think that most of us take the dosages as prescribed, but I'm not naive. There will ALWAYS be those who will abuse these privileges- hence the strict guidelines. And it's a shame.
IMO, the best way to approach this controversy is to simply share what our own experiences have been, and how it's affected us individually.
For me, I'm presently on 16mgs generic Subutex, 4mgs of Klonopin, and 20mgs of Brintellix (for depression). I have been on this regimen for almost 6 years now and I haven't encountered a single negative side effect. AGAIN- this has been MY own personal experience.
I'm not telling ANYONE to follow my regimen. I'm telling you this has worked for me for a number of years and I have been absolutely fine.
So, IMO, my treatment is very effective for me! I know my own body, how I tolerate medications, and I'm very happy and live a successful life- both interpersonal and in my career.
Doctors are under an enormous amount of pressure from the medical boards- they must justify what they're prescribing. So a majority of them are very cautious.
Bottom line- take your meds responsibly and according to the dosage instructions. Build a relationship with with your doctor and always be honest with them.
Again, I respect the differences of opinion on here.
Supplement your medicine regimen with counseling or something- meds alone won't (IMO) achieve the best results.
I wish you all the best in your journey. My journey has been remarkable.
Take care everyone!
*Also, please try to refrain from attacks towards other members. Use the phrase, "IMO....." instead- it comes off as less controversial and not a personal attack. Just FYI.
Regards!
I went thru this as well, i know your pain. Forcing us to choose between our sanity or our sobriety. Not fair at all..Only a suboxone doctor can write for both at the same time and you have to find one who is willing. What kind of wean did they put you on? Sending prayers your way.
If you are awake and motivated , while on sub and benzo combination or any other medications that it's possible to have the respiratory failure? I've always wondered when its said respiratory failure if it means the individual was asleep or unconscious and couldn't tell themselves to breathe ? Is it possible to be active and have respiratory failure?j
Yea that sounds about right. I hope you doing alright Peace and Love
Exactly you said large amounts she is simply saying as long as you take your right amount of dosages!
I totally agree ive been on suboxen 7 years because i don't want to use morphine when im on 1/2 (4mg's) a day and my boyfriend works for a big contracting company so i travel alot and every dr.ive ever seen for suboxen has always perscribed valum or calonopans with the suboxen if you take it right or even 2 during day and 2 at night to sleep your ok just like you said just everyone using there head, and thats part of being responsible in our own recovery
DAM.!! dude , that's is some high doses, but hey if doc says ok , knock your self out, mind what give me crap just suboxone , 4mg x 2 a day , to help get off clonazepam 2mg a day .....ye'll crazy I know..............
Thank you nikki for sharing...I too have been concerned..I do not abuse my xanex..my Dr. Just recently put me on them.a low dose at nite because of some personal issues I'm dealing with..I take saboxen 8mg.3 times a day and both my suboxne Dr.and my md work in the same group and work closely together..
I take suboxen and a benzo. I signed a waver that I believe the benefits outweigh the risks. I am not in any way endorsing that you do this and mix these drugs. I've heard its quite dangerous. I've been on these meds for 7 years with no problems. That's just me though.
Thank you so much. I just started suboxone, and i have panic disorder. And i was wondering if i can take my xanax. I was honest wuth ny doctor and he said Yes to take as prescribed
I'm also on perocets, started on subs today. Tried before but failed,I really don't like how subs make me feel but as far as doing a whole one I just do a fourth of a piece, works as good as a whole piece and one sub will last a long time save money too
