Biphetamine Treatment
UpdatedOriginally used for weight reduction--it is available for treatment of ADD. I was originally prescribed it for the former, but found it more effective for treatment of ADD than other drugs such as ADDERALL. If not currently available through your company, can you provide sufficient information for pharmacists to formulate this.
I believe that this drug is related directly to Adderrall, right? In fact it contains the exact same chemical ingredients (Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine). A listing is available at Biphetamine.asp. Hope this helps...
I have recently been started on Adderall after a period of several years. About 30 years ago, before ADD for adults was even considered, I was prescribed Biphetamine for weight control. I successfully went through graduate school on this (I probably couldn't have done so without it.), but then was without it for many years. A few years ago, I was finally diagnosed with ADD (no H) and was never very comfortable on it, i.t., jittery, etc. Recently I was started on Adderall again with some of the same symptoms. When I took the Biphetamines, it was in capsule form (street name: black beauty) and was very comfortable on it. Do you suppose the difference is my age or is the Biphetamine released at a slower rate? Is it still produced in a black capsule at 30 mg.?
Why is biphetamine only discussed on this Web site? Is it available by this name in US? Which pharmaceutical company? Cannot find listing at Biphetamine.asp.
i noticed a comment from 2005 indicated that biphetmines were presdribed for ADD. is anyone out there being given this instead of Adderall ,etc? what dose? how often? do you or your physician know of any articles - recent - on the subject? i just moved to virginia beach, and the four docs i've seen so far look at me like i have three heads when i mention just Adderall. from the little i do know and remember from l-o-n-g ago in grad school, biphetamenes (30mg.) seems to work better than 2 or3 dose of an Adderall-type med. please reply. thanks.
It is the exact same thing as Adderall, just a different brand name, so if you are taking Adderall, you will not achieve any difference by switching to this and there will be no difference to your treatment.
I was hopin to find an article I could site the next time I talked to doc about this. I can't remember what journal I read. I need a longer acting med than Adderall and can't afford Vyanase. Even on 20 mg. of Addderall t.i.d., I don't ever get shaky. After reading the article, I thought I found the solution. The guy looked at me like I had three heads when I related what I had read to ask is opinion. I kept tellilng him the info was in the medical literature, knowing he had access while I did not - to no avail. If anyone can site a particular article or journal for that matter, please respond. I thank you in advance for your help in ths matter.
ADDERAL is not, IS NOT the same drug as BIPHETAMINE. Biphetamine was discontinued back in the mid seventies due to all the abuse and trademark/patent issues. Pennwalt simply stopped manufacturing them. Biphetamine is the same as dexidrine(Dextroamphetamine), but it was a dextroamphetamine RESIN. They came in black, black and white and white capsules. 20 mg. 12mg.and 7mg.'s respectively. All the problems from abuse to misrepresentation and bootlegs led the federal government to ban them altogetherback in 1976. Although Adderall may have a few mg.s of Biphetamine mixed in with it's XR formula, this does not make adderall BIPHETAMINE! Far from it. Adderall is a cocktail of ritalin. Basic Amphetamine, dextroamphetamines and a dash of biphetamine, hardly enough to notice. Anyone that has once used Biphetamine will surley tell you that nothing comes close to the strength and smooth stealth of a real Biphetaminel Many would like to see them come back.
I had Biphetamine as late as 1986. They were very powerful. But after '86 I never saw them again.
Adderall (notice the first 3 letters) actually has 4 differnt isometric amphphetamine compounds; only one or which is associated with the euphoria that drives it's recreational useage. Origanally marketed in the 60's under the name Obetrol, Shire was able to gain the patent for it's application in the treatment of ADD. I hate drug companies and thier patent protection schemes. Amphetamines are as easy and cheap to produce as aspirin. But I applaud Shire for it's ability to remove the stigma attached to amphetamines and open a whole new world for many people; myself included.
Bradan hit it right on the head.
Pennwalt manufactured this drug
up until 1976. I handled thousands
of these pills in my teens right
through college. They are the original Black Beauties. Nothing
better was ever sold to date.
Hence it's potential for use/abuse. Where are you, definatively?
Tomsapsford,
I can not answer that question.
The word definatively does not exist.
Biphetamine rocked. A single 20mg. cap kept the night wide awake well into morning, ONE!
So I flunked spelling. Do you remember Biphetamine-q? It was a compound of 10/10 plus 90mgs of methaquaalone. Really! Sort of like dexamyl. rember that?
Daytona? Wasup wi dat? Port Orange. My doctor prescribes me Staight dexadrine 15mgs tid. It's as close as your going to get to Biphetamine
Sure.I remember dexamyl. Not many people cared for this compond. The Biphetamine-q, never heard of it. Was it sold in pharmacys or distributed directly by
physicans like 697's and RP's.
Yes these drugs were abused but now as many or more are abused and they didn't take those off the shelf. I long for the 70's or even 80's...But I disagree, yours was not the best drug, the best was the real 70's PRELUDIN..Pink round tablet, nothing better before or after in my book.
Bradden hit it right on the head. That has been my question for years. I have been treated for ADD, and my God what a difference it's made. However in late 2005 my medication started making me irritable and nervous. I had used desoxyn for approximately 25 of thoe 30 years, and there'd never been any of those kind of problems. Years ago, I'd had a chance to take those bi-phetamines, and they were so smooth. So for the last several years I've been looking for the biphetamines. Is there any chance a compounding pharmacy would/ or could make these? Or even just the old benzedrine? You obviously know what you're talking about it so any advice you could provide me would be very appreciated. Thank so very very much
Treated for ADD for 30 yrs. Most of that time, we used desoxyn as I couldn't tolerate the over stimulation from dexedrine, adderall. Ritalin and focalin just aren't very effective. I got to use biphetamines before I was diagnosed with ADD. There ain't nothing like it on the market today. So my question is there any compounding pharmacies that'll make it?
I worked for the OTC side of Pennwalt in the 70's. The Pennwalt Presc rep gave me some Black Beauties from his samples. Oh boy. Was cooking for 36 hrs +. Had mucho energy. Wanted to paint the house, paint the car, paint the neighbor's stuff. Good pharmaceutical grade speed. Easy to get use to. Story was the bi-phets were an offshoot of an anti-fatigue drug used by WW II pilots/soldiers. A side-effect was loss of appetite and the greedy drug companies spun it into a weight loss medicine. Pennwalt folded, terribly mismanaged. Glad they bit the dust.

I'm one who wants them back. The couple of years I was regularly on biphetamine were BY FAR the best years of my life.
Re: Verwon (# 5)
Do you mean to say that Adderall provides the same effects, including appetite suppression and euphoria as black beauties? I certainly doubt it.
Re: echeeanoose (# 20)
Just an update to your comments made on Feb 12, 2010 about Biphetamine 20 "Black Beauties". I do not doubt much of your story. However, your former employer "may" have been mismanaged, as you say. The facts are that, "Biphetamine 20 mg" became a not advertised "orphan drug" by Penwalt Pharmaceutical Corp. after the years 1978/1979+. Rochester NY. I know for a fact, that, I once knew (now retired) the likely most well known M.D in Dallas Texas, (Dr. Paul Elliott), a keynote speaker for ADDA.org and a national speaker, I recorded his one hour guest speaker tape in a big name hotel near Dupont Plaza in Washington DC in March of 1998. Dr. Elliott phrased the benefits of (now) Fisons Corporation (Rochester NY 14603) of target specific BIPHETAMINE 20 mg, NDC code 0585-0875 from at least the years 1960's until the year 1998. Dr Elliott had in the 1990's the largest number of patients who he treated for especially Adult ADHD, ADD, and Narcolepsy! (TX) He highly recommended RJS Biphetamine, Desoxyn, and Dexedrine, Dr Elliott had thousands of patients, over his very long career he specialized in ADD/ADHD! The 3rd top high quality ER stimulant I took from 1969 until, the present (2017) along with former, sadly, the Abbott Desoxyn Gradument / Desbutal Gradumet, methamphetamine and, finally, Smith Kline French Dexedrine Spansules, all have been discontinued, and are not on a orphan list, with the exception of Amedra Dexedrine Spansules 15mg but who in the world can afford 90 caps of 15 mg of Dexedrine Spansules for as much as ten dollars per pill AWP!!! and that is now an orphan drug!!! He was a strong advocate for the anti over-excessive language in the PDR's of the 1970's thru the 1990's, stating that the "big bold prints" by the National Academy of Sciences and the FDA, was short of hogwash, and, he was my hero! Most unfortunately, yes, Biphetamine production was halted later in the year of 1998.
I do not have a reference source available at the moment about post 1998, but, I am convinced that it was no longer an "orphan drug" beginning in the year of 1999, thus millions of US citizens, now, have IMHO been cheated of, one of the very best extended release and very smooth stimulants ever manufactured in the USA !! I am so sad that, the state of affairs in the past 7 years are so grim for very needy patients for the various neurological conditions as I have mentioned. It is a national tragedy IMHO that, the "stigma" continued to always hurt the sales of Biphetamine Black Beauties, that, yes goes back as far as 1974 to 1976! I personally experienced since the year 1969, especially since the year of 1973, that, Biphetamine 20 mg were very HTF because too many MD's including Psychiatrists were also affected by the stigma of the enormously popular Biphetamine 20 mg capsules, that, were so very common in the 60/70's, and it all quickly ended (prescriptions wrote per year) with a dramatic drop off in this C-II stimulant, from the year 1974 until 1976, and frankly for the duration of the existence of the next 24 years! The quality of manufacturers and choice of stimulants are a just a shadow of once was available to US citizens "now" compared to the late 1960's! Biphetamine had just 4 active major fillers, and many out there especially generic are stuffed with binders and fillers as many as 10 to 12 fillers in 2017!
Fisons Corporation Bedford MA USA made the last Biphetamine capsule in the year 1998. They were the very very rare, but "final step up" of the exact same formula from the 1960's formula of the shiny Black Beauty 20 mg. embossed "RJS" by former Strasenburgh Labs of Rochester NY.
I once knew............................via a Washington DC national convention cira 1998, a now retired MD, who prescribed this med from the greater Dallas Texas USA region of USA, he used to be a keynote speaker for national ADDA conventions held once a year in the USA, (next convention is in Atlanta GA for November 2017).
The reason many on this forum state the Strasenburgh later "Pennwalt" eventually Fisons Pharm firms who made the real deals associate 1976 as the last year, is because IMHO that was the very last year, I personally had access to those well deserved famous Black Beauties, after that "Bicentenial Year 1976" I never saw one or had access to any, and, even the street availability of Biphetamine really dried up..........IMHO. Radical changes in the USA comparing 1971 to the year 1979 !!
I had ADHD but, some MD's would prescribe me Preludin, or Dexedrine, or once Desoxyn, but it was off label prior to the mid 1970's. It took me, a long dry run of begging USA Psychiatrists, finally in the year 1994 for the "Speed Stigma" to be removed by a very trusting USA Psychiatrist, as ADHD ADD, Narcolepsy, and Refractory Depression was accepted, and the "diet pill" abuse of the 1960's and early 1970's was finally removed.
I lost a solid 20 years of my adult life due to the stigma once attached to any USA stimulant, but was rescued in 1994 ( by this time I had hit the mile marker of age 40 years old + ......
Yes, I well remember the Biphetamine-T which was a red and black shiny capsule of a upgraded Biphetamine 20 mg (Black Beauty) as mfg was Strasenburgh and the Biphetamine-T had methaqualone added to the resin complexes of d and dl-amphetamine "all as a cation exchange resin complexes of sulfonated polystyrene" quote from the 1968 Physicians Desk Reference, page 1131 of the 22nd edt published by Medical Economics Inc Oradell, New Jersey copyright 1967. The "T" stood for Tuazole (Methaqualone) and the embossment on both the red and black or the black beauty was a "RJS" the king of the hill from the mid 1960's until July of 1973, when the newly formed DEA banned the production of target specific combined stimulants with a sedative, with one exception, SKF's Dexamyl 5mg, 10mg 15 mg was given a reprieve from the DEA until SKF discontinued it in the year 1982. Also, Strasenburgh Labs, a division of Wallace and Tiernan Inc, of Rochester, NY was sold to Penwalt Corporation in late 1970 / and transitioned during the year 1971 During the 1990's Fisons Corporation, also of Rochester NY 14603 continued to manufacture the Biphetamine in the two strengths as Strasenburgh had since the mid 1960's, in a 12 1/2 capsule and the 20 all black shiney capsule, (the former was a 1/2 black and 1/2 white capsule) until, the end of calendar year 1998. That darn stigma from the diet pill late 1960's and early 1970's counterculture, is what caused, the ADD and ADHD MD's to shy away from prescribing this excellent stimulant, as, Obetrol, (later Richwood's Adderall) was to steal the show, along later with ShireUS who bought out Richwood around the year 2002. Thus, the famous black beauties are "Gone with the Wind" most unfortunately.... I was fortunate enough to have tried all versions in the early 1970's, and only the long deleted, Abbott Desbutal Gradumet 15mg of Methamphetamine added to 90 mg of Sodium Pentobarbital could compete with the "Red & Black" RJS/ later just Penwalt, Biphetamine T 20 mg! I got the very last of the combination stimulants with powerful sedatives, in June of 1973, as I could not get my RX filled in the following month July of 1973 due to that DEA ruling!!! I shall never forget!
Supha, on Sun, Feb 02 '14, 4:00 AM - You Stated: "I just found some biphetamine capsules mixed in with an elderly family members things, they're completely black and the packages are still sealed. I'm wondering if the fact that they're from the '70s would matter much if one were to take them."
You can look up pill ID's on the internet by the numbers on those pills. They are similar to adderall but NOT the same.
Pharmaceuticals are DESIGNED and REQUIRED to be STABLE, and their potency falls very very little over time, especially when they are sealed so there is no air to dissipate? depotentiate?* over time. *(Not the exact word I'm looking for but you get the idea.)
I recall a study by some Harvard Professor who did drug evaluations on old meds like this and found something like ten year old pills in a plastic RX bottle in a med. cabinet in an A/C'd home only lost like 4 or 2% of their potency in that time. IMPORTANT - SEE BELOW.
As I recall, his conclusion was that none of the pills that he studied had weakened to the point that they would NOT pass the 'relative equivalence' percentages legally required of generics vs. Brand.
That drug evaluation may have played a role in a legal suit around 2015 by Louisiana's Atty. General against the big pharma companies, regarding the BS 'expiration dates' on meds.
Conclusion: Research and assume they are full potency and similar to Adderall. Take no more than one at first (and I would also do a 'taste check' by opening the capsules - as BB's/Biphetamines all were (as I recall- odds 91%) - to ensure that the one you taste does not taste as if it's 'gone bad.' [IMPORTANT: EXCEPT Antibiotics OR Antivirals].
Biphetamine was NOT the same as Adderall! first of all Biphetamine was a 50/50 mix between d-amphetamine and l-amphetamine, where as Adderall is 75% d-amphetamine and only 25% l-amphetamine.
second of all, Biphetamine used a Strasionic ion exchange resin complex that allowed a smooth, controlled 12-14 hours of effects.
whether it's ice, crank, Vyvanse, Desoxyn, Adderall, or whatever - you will never find speed as smooth as Biphetamine was.
These people don't know what their about. Adderall is not the same.I took b ip he taming from the 1960 till they were removed from the market. I was prescribed them because I was a narcoleptic. I know what I'm talking about.
Dex for dexedrine long-acting capsules. Both ends black and perhaps 10 for the amt of mg.
They haven't been around since 1982; but ARE still being manf.
They're half black & half clear? I think...
This only pertains to the original Dexedrine caps & original manufacturer. Now with generics; they're more like white large-ish discs for 10mg regular release. Hard to know with all the generics these days!
I am a narcoleptic Adderall Is not the same it made me feel like I was going to have a heart attack. Ever since they removed this from the market my life has been living hell.nothing I can do about it. What right do people have to remove this drug.there are people who do not abuse drugs.
