Bendectin And Birth Defects (Page 6) (Top voted first)

I took this drug in the 1970's while pregnant. Am looking for the side effects to the babies. Drug has been off the market for many years. Not sure on correct spelling. Used for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Thank you for any help you can send me. Sincerely, Dana.

I took Bendectin in 1974 into 1975 with my first daughter. She is a mother of 2 girls, a college graduate with a very demanding job. However, she has severe thyroid issues which she took oral radiation pills for and has exczema which is under control with occasional flare ups. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Bendectin. My morning sickness and nausea were so severe that I could not gain weight. At the time, it was a miracle drug to me and I trusted my Doctor.

I took Bendectin in 1979 during my pregnancy with my daughter. I would have been sick and vomiting throughout my pregnancy if I had not stayed on that medication to the very end. I am not a good medicine taker and tried to not take it periodically, thinking I needed to give my body a chance to see if it could complete the pregnancy without any meds. That did not work! I took it until the day I delivered my baby girl. My daughter was born January 1980 with absolutely no problems. She is 37 and has never had any issues that I would suspiciously relate to the drug. In 1983, I was given the drug once again for constant sickness and vomiting during my pregnancy with my son. I literally took one dose before the doctors office called back to tell me to STOP taking it. I'm assuming it was taken off the market at that time. Needless to say, I did not take anymore! Crazy thing was my son was born with an extra finger which was immediately taken off right after delivery. I find it difficult to think I took it every day with my daughter and she was perfectly fine, even to this day; and I take one pill and my son is born with an extra finger. I do not believe the drug had any effect on the birth of either of my children, not even my son. But I do believe more research needs to be done on ANY medication ingested if one is pregnant. Just my thoughts.

My mother took Bendectin in 1977 for 4-5 months of my formative years. I was born with a very very rare “twisted liver”, have been ill off n on my whole life. I’m now 41 and after hundreds of tests i'm finding out I have a rare form of a severe case of Rheumatoid arthritis. With a negative rhF (Rh Factor) test. I have never been able to carry a baby, get married, hold a carrier or function daily anymore. I was that “Wonder Woman“ when I could work. I would give anything to have just a normal life. But, always playing catch up financially, constant stress... There needs to be a legal suit somewhere. I’ve been completely robbed of a normal life. I know I can’t be the only one. Please share your stories, so we can bring awareness to these very serious life impairments we are suffering from! I have read they discontinued the drug in ‘83 and now it’s on the market under a different name, I’m sure after they removed that life altering chemical in the original Bendectin.

Research and get your medical records from that time proving u were on it and for what length of time. And your story. I’m working on a legal suit for myself. If u are interested let me know and I can help direct u to the proper attorneys.

Re: Katherine Jackson (# 691) Expand Referenced Message

I will try to answer how it happens. Bobby was heathy at birth. ( we thought so) At 5 Months he was chubby. The next month and till he died was like a nightmare. He developed pneumonia and when he threw up it was so forceful it landed on the floor. He’s was that way until he died. He was at the Children University of Madison, in Wisconsin. He was at the hospital in Shawano and was transferred to the St. hospital in Green Bay. They told me he was lacking T-Cells that would fights diseases. He was given some other Cells to help him now. I think he was one of first one to be a boy-in-the-bubble. The doctor later on said, it was cancer. When he died he only weighs 12 pounds. I have all the letters from the doctors.

Hi Carole, my daughter was born May 21, 1983, the very day they took Bendectin off the market. I was in the hospital and it was on the news. I took the drug for months from fall of 82 - jan feb march of 83. My daughter has so many conditions, she was severe ADHD, she cannot reason well, she doesn't work, can't hold a job. She was in and out of treatment from age 5 on. I know that drug did something to her! She also has all types of health issues

I was prescribed Benedictine in 1970. Exactly what were the birth defects this drug caused? I had only briefly heard little info about four years after taking it. And know it is very important that I know more about it. Thanks.

I was prescribed bendictine in 1970 also for my first pregnancy. My daughter, who is now 35, did have a serious birth defect in that her uterus was misshapen and she was unable to sustain a pregnancy. After hundreds of tests and procedures including invitro, she finally became a mother through surrogacy. Many of her friends the same age have experienced infertility and have had to resort to in vitro and more to become mothers. I would be interested in obtaining info on any class action suit regarding bendictine. As in my daughters case, we had no idea there was any birth defect/problem until she reached adulthood and then her gynecologist made the connection to the drug.

To Carol - I am suprised that you took Bendictine in 1980 & 82 as I could not take it with my second child in 1975 as my OBGYN said it had been taken off the market then becauce of birth defects. I remember it clearly as I was deathly sick with the second child almost the whole pregnancy!

I took this drug during my pregnancy in 1976-1977, my daughter, now 31 has been struggling with severe mood swings, (especially during her menstral cycle) depression, anxiety and I believe she may be manic depressive. I have always wondered if this was a side effect. Any others out there with similar concerns as those with my daughter?

I also took Bendictine when pregnant with my sons in 1979 & 1982. They are both severely Dyslexic with moderate ADHD. The second one reads on a third grade level. School was a nightmare for both. I have always suspected that this drug might be the cause.

The drug was called Bendectin and was a mixture of vitamin B6 and doxylamine. Vitamin B6 is also present in prenatal vitamins. The doxylamine is an anitihistamine that is still used in over-the counter sleep medicines, such as Unisom. Bendectin was very commonly used in the 1970's and was prescribed for most people who were pregnant. I remember as a pharmacist during that time, that newly pregnant moms would show up with prescriptions for prenatal vitamins and for Bendectin. I also remember when Bendectin was withdrawn from the market, because of lawsuits. I have done a literature search and am unable to find any evidence that this product actually did cause brith defects. I don't deny that babies were born with birth defects, but that happens even without the Bendectin, so it is hard to place the blame there. There is no description of the specific type of birth defect that was blamed on this drug. I also looked for birth defects caused by antihistamines and was unable to find any specific data.

I took Bendectine for nine months with my son 1975 and seven months with my daughter 1978-I didnot take it on weekends so vomited all weekend long - the drug scared me but I couldn't function at work without. My son is good and has a son - my son born with an inverted breast bone that usually also has a heart defect (he had no heart defect) He just recently got Gullain Barre Syndrome (happens to one in one hundred thousand people-he was ill for a few months now back to normal) My daughter exhibits the traits of polcystic ovarian problems (cold hands and feet, cyst on her ovary that required surgery, hair loss, extreme flat chest, facial hair etc) So. . . are these normal life things or a result of my taking Bendectine?? I was so deathly sick I wouldn't have carried then to term without the drug. . .

Hello All-
My Mom took benedictin while she was pregnant with me and my sister. I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at age 26. This type of cancer diagnosis is very rare for someone in their twenties. My sister had pre-cancerious polyps at age 25. I seriously think the drug is to blame. I am currently trying to do more research.
