My eldery lady has back pain all the time, she is confined to her recliner and she doesn't walk. Will this combination of diclofenac, gabapentin & lidocaine help alleviate her back pain? It originally was presribed for pain in her feet. ## Hi Patti, As a topical pain-relieving cream, it may help. However, one cannot distinctly say that it will or will not without trying it first. - Diclofenac is a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) marketed for use in treating mild to moderate pain/inflammation. - Gabapentin is marketed for use in treating nerve pain (as well as certain types of seizures). - Lidocaine is a sodium channel blocker marketed for use in relieving pain and numbing tissue (skin). To what extent these ingredients will help her pain is anyone's guess... How...

I suffer from pain in both knees. I also suffer from pain in my left ankle region which my doctor tells me is due to "inflammation". He has prescribed me Altraday - 1 tablet every night at bed time for 5 nights and says it should not be taken too often. I do not get a clear answer from him on how often is "too often". I have experimented on my own and found that 1 tablet a day gives me good relief from pain for the first 24 hours and somewhat reduced relief for the next 24 hours. On this basis, if I continue to take one tablet of Altrday every alternate day on long term basis, I hope to lead a much better life. Is it OK, or do you have any suggestions? ## Hello, Ritinkar! How are you? Altraday contains the active ingredient Diclofenac. The FDA classifies this as a nonste...

I am taking Diclofenac sodium ec 75 mg twice daily and it is not even touching on the pain I am having. I was told by a pharmacist that I could take Acetaminophen with this, but to what extent? Can I take it with the pill or in between pills? How long should I wait? ## What medical conditions are you being treated for? Are you on any other medications? While it's technically okay to take both, there are other factors that can play a role, such as those that I've asked about. Have you talked to your doctor about it? If the Diclofenac isn't helping your pain, they may be able to prescribe something else. I had an allergic reaction to the Dermabond used as glue after my surgery. I was prescribed a Medrol 4mg dose pack. I have been on it for 2 days now and no improvement. How long does it usually take to see improvement? I am still red, swollen and itching badly. ## Hello, Debbie! How are you? It may take several days, before you start to see improvement. Has there been any change, yet? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne and insomnia. How is the itching? You may want to ask your doctor what you can take to help relieve it. ## I just had the same thing happen in response to Dermabond. It's awful!!! Doctor just prescribed the Medrol pack. About every 6 to 8 weeks I go on a 16 day decreasing round of Prednisone starting w 40mg x 4 days, 30mg x 4 days, 20mg x 4 days, and 10mg x4 days. I have been doing this for 2 years. The results of the medicine are wonderful. I am 72, and actually have flashes of my youth from the drug. Near the end of the 6 to 8 weeks without the Prednisone I am quite miserable. I am interested in knowing the risks of decreasing to the 20mg level and just staying on long term for 6 months. ## The NIH lists the long-term risks of steroid usage as possibly including weight gain, moon face, fluid retention, congestive heart failure and immune suppression. It would be best not to take it, long-term, without your doctor's approval. Are you on any other medications? ## Holy Cow! Get off of that.I have se...

Hey guys I was tapering prednisone and I was at 20mg and by mistake I took 30mg (I thought the pill was 10mg pills). What should I do? Should I skip the next dose for the next hours, any suggestions? ## Hi Michael! What did you end up doing? The only suggestion I would've been able to make, had I read your post sooner, was to check with your doctor or pharmacist. Tapering off of steroids has to be done very carefully, so I am not sure how much taking the wrong dosage and going back up would screw things up. You can learn more Prednisone details here. ## Call your Doctor or your pharmacist. They will know how to handle this.

What is a small round light blue pill with 220 imprinted on one side and blank on the other? I found it at home with children and just looking to see if I should worry? ## Hi Marbear, If the light blue pill your describing has a bit of an oval shape to it, then my findings point to Naproxen sodium 220mg; an over-the-counter NSAID used for inflammation, fever, minor aches and pains. From what I could gather, the Drug Identification Number is 02385007. If you still have any doubts about the pill ID, I would also encourage you to take it into a local pharmacy for a second opinion. Hope this helps!

Have been taking Prednisone 20mg pills split into 4 pieces for a bronchial infection. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6 to 1 portions per day. It doesn't seem to be taking effect, although it has worked in the past. Could it have lost it's effectiveness? ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml It's possible that it may still be effective, but my personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3 years old. When was the last time you tried taking it? ##...

I have had shingles for more than a month. I went to urgent care three times already. All my doctors are on vacation now and they don't have a doctor to see me. I am in excruciating pain. First visit in urgent care they gave me Naproxen 375 mg, Valacyclovir 1 GM and Methocarbamol 500 mg at the same time. Along with Shingles I have cracked ribs too. For 10 days (this was the prescription length) I keep in control with baths with baking soda to calm down the pain and burning feeling. After that I was worse than ever. My next trip to urgent care, they prescribed Gabapentin 300 mg 3 times a day, upon following up with my doctor. They gave me a lot tests, cause of an unusual pain (like somebody stabbing a knife in my belly), the Shingles blisters was very severe. It was around my waist l...

How long does it take for Lodine to get out of your system? I've been having major anxiety after stopping this medication. ## This medication contains the active ingredient Etodolac, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, it is most commonly used to treat pain, fever, and swelling. However the times it takes to actually leave your system can be quite different from its half life, so they might not necessarily be equivalent. How long were you taking it, and what dosage were you taking? More information might help me provide you with an answer to your question. Can you please post back and clarify? Are you on any other questions?

I have inflammation in my back and was taking a pill called Cataflam 50mg but it does not work and still hurts. Can I take a cti 103 (Diclofenac Sodium 75mg) pill instead? Is Cataflam 50mg weaker than Diclofenac Sodium 75mg? ## Hi Evenlyn, Sorry to hear about your back condition. I hope you feel better soon! To answer your question, in short, yes, 50mg is weaker than 75mg. Cataflam is simply another brand name of Diclofenac; so it's pretty much the exact same thing at a different dosage, albeit the suffix is potassium with Cataflam instead of sodium as with the common/standard Diclofenac (& I'm not certain as to whether either mineral makes any notable difference in bioavailability/potency). As to whether or not you can take 75mg instead of 50mg, that's entirely up to yo...

I have some prednisone I got in 2005 are they still good 10 years later? ## Hi Kim, According a news article from the LA Times, many medications actually remain good for up to 20-40 years past the expiration date, depending on the substance and how they're stored. Harvard Medical School also has a very similar article stating that many medications are good well beyond the 10 year mark. Ref: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml I don't have a specific list of these exact medications, nor do I encourage taking something that's expired, but often times it seems that the date listed is based on mere speculation and not tested by manufacturers for efficacy past a certain time frame, even if it is still ok to take. Having said that, if 100% efficacy is important to you...
