I assumed it wasn't until I looked at the other medicine (a cough bottle) that I was prescribed by the same doctor.. It has ethanol (alcohol) in it. I finish big exams soon and have been looking forward to a cocktail party for ages.. If it's dangerous to take the course of tablets with alcohol then I'm considering not taking the tablets (three a day) for the day of the celebrations. Am I crazy? ## There are always dangers if you mix a medication with alcohol, however, the general reason you are warned about it withy Amoxicillin is because it can worsen the side effects. If you've been experiencing anything, like the dizziness, drowsiness and nausea, then the alcohol could m...
Hello, My son is 6 and half years old at 64lb he has a throat infection. Doctor gave him Amoxicillin 11ML 3times a day for 7 days. this sounds like a lot, just wondering is this the usual dosage for a 6 and a half year old?? ## At his age, it is dosed by weight and the severity of the infection, so you should administer it as his doctor has directed. The U.S. FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## My 6-year-old son has a throat infection. His weight is 46lbs. They gave him amoxicillin 500 mg and they said to give him 5mL every 12 hours. Is that enough?
Hi, I was just wondering if liquid Amoxicillin actually goes bad & could possibly harm someone, or does it just lose its potency? For example, liquid Amoxicillin kept in fridge the whole time, not quite a month old...there's no expiration date anywhere on the bottle, & there was extra left over after it was administered correctly for 10 days. Does it "go bad"/spoil like a food would? Thanks! ## Hello, Ricky! How are you? Yes, it can go sour and, while it wouldn't actually be harmful, it could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps, if taken once expired, as reported by the FDA. Most liquids are only good for a few weeks, but the pharmacy should be able to give a more precise date. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Amoxicillin is actually only good for...

I have a gum infection because I have a bad tooth that needs to be pulled. The dentist prescribed me Amoxicillin 875 mg. I'm just wondering how long will it take for my gums to return back to normal. I've been taking the pills for 7 days and I have 3 days left. ## Hello, Shauna! How are you doing? The general rule for antibiotics is that you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. If you still have swelling, it may not be the right one to treat the infection you have and you may need to ask about taking something else. When are you having the tooth extracted? It would be best to do it after the infection has improved, otherwise it may not numb properly. ## As rightlly said by Verwon, at seven days you shud ave had an improvement if not complete heali...

Hi my son is 6 years old and has pink eye. I took him to urgent care because I couldn't get into his normal pediatrician before they closed for the day. He has also been having pain behind one of his ears/kind of on his jaw line. I told the doctor this and he checked his ears saying he did not have an ear infection but that he believes it could be mastoiditis. This concerns me but the doc acted like it isn't a big deal. He prescribed eye drops for pink eye and amoxicillin 250mg/5ml suspect 100ml and told me to give him 17.5ml 2x a day. He only weighs 46 pounds. I feel like this is way too much for his age and weight. Is this amount too much or is it normal for his diagnosis? Please help! ## You should give him the dosage the doctor has prescribed. Antibiotics are usually dosed a...

My 6 year old had a possible allergic reaction to amoxicillin. We stopped giving her the medication after only 2 doses. However, 2 days after stopping the medication, her rash is not only not going away, it is intensifying and spreading. Is this normal? What should I do to help alleviate the rash and itching? I have been giving her Benadryl regularly. ## Hi Lori, Sorry to hear about your child's reaction to Amoxicillin. According to NIH.gov, this is indicative of an allergic reaction. However, it may be that the antibiotic is still trying to find its way out of her system. NIH goes on to note that the half-life of Amoxicillin is 61.3 minutes....Further, approx. 60% of an orally administered dose of amoxicillin is said to be excreted in the urine within a period of 6 to 8 hours. This...
I've been taking 875mg Amoxicillin/125mg Clav for a tooth abscess. My doctor gave me 10 days worth of meds to take twice a day. I've been taking it now for 4days but breaks it down into 3 times a day by splitting the pill in 1/2 which means I'm actually taking a pill and a 1/2. I tried the 1st day and it made me sick so I decided to try it this way but I'm noticing my abscess is not going down it actually got a little bigger. I was told that regardless the infection should've went down at least a little by now but it hasn't.. ## If you aren't taking the amount prescribed, then you may not be getting enough to eradicate the infection that has caused the abscess. It is very important to take the dosage that you are prescribed, in order to eradicate the infectio...
Antibiotic information on Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium ## Ok I know this is probably the wrong place to past this question and ask for answers. But I love to help people on this site and I am hoping some one on here will help me out. Here is the problem: I went to the doctor yesterday and I got my Tetnus shot and i got a full blood panel done. The routine. I got my results back today and I am shocked and scared. In fact, I found this out 3 hours ago and I still feel numb and stupified. My enzyme levels in my liver are pretty high. Higher than they shoud be. And my doc wants me back in a month for a Hepatitis test. I am very concerned and I was wondering if there is anything that can cause enzyme leves to be high that doesnt involve Hep. or any other life threatening diseases. I am ...
I have small round yellow pills that look like they have BMP on one side and 193 underneath it, with nothing on the other side. I am pretty sure they are my dogs but just want to make sure what they are as the label got wet. ## Hello, Jean! How are you and your pups? I thought this one looked familiar, we lost a dog to cancer just before Christmas, so I looked through his remaining medications, since he'd been sick for awhile. Our vet prescribed it for an infection, it is listed as containing 50mgs of the antibiotic Amoxicillin. I can't say if it was prescribed last year, or sometime prior, since we'd used multiple vets and battled his health issues for a long time. We lost track a long time ago. Labels wear, with handling, or as you stated, they sometimes get damp, and you ...
My son still has two bottles of amoxicillin liquid that has not been opened or used since the pharmacist made it. How long will it last if kept in the fridge ## Hi, Amanda! How are you? Yes, antibiotic suspensions start to lose their efficacy once expired and taking an antibiotic that is not fully effective can be dangerous, since it creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Such liquids are only good for 7 to 21 days, depending on the type. Learn more Amoxicillin details here. Why didn't your son finish the medication? Unless his doctor instructs otherwise, an antibiotic should always be finished to make sure that the infection is fully eradicated and to help prevent the development of the antibiotic resistant bacteria that I mentioned. ## I used it as directed ...
I took 10ml of liquid amoxicillin today. Original fill date was 12/17/17 and use by date was 12/27/17. My hands started itching immediately and within the hour my face, ears and neck were bright red and my entire body was itching. Could I have developed an allergic reaction or did this happen because I used after the "use by date"? ## It sounds like you might have developed an allergic reaction. Medications used after the Use By Date are not guaranteed to be as effective as before the date. When a medication has been mixed with water when you buy it from the pharmacy, it is less potent and effective when used after the Use By Date than other medication usually are. ## The information BL provided is correct. Liquids, or creams always tend to degrade much faster than solid forms o...
I have 500mg Amoxicillin capsules for an ear infection and they are pink and blue. Last time I had an ear infection the capsules were red and yellow. I'm wondering if these were a different dosage, its been a few years but I believe they were slightly smaller. I'm hoping the ones I have now are a higher dose because it took a 4 week course to clear it up last time, and now I have a 2 month old daughter and have to stick cotton balls in my ears when she cries or I black out for a second from the pain. Last time my ear drum ruptured, I'm really hoping I've caught this early enough to prevent that happening because that kind of pain was atleast 100x worse than labor. ## Based on the colors which you are describing for the capsules it sounds like you have the Amoxil brand of...
