Adderall Manufactured By Teva Not Working (Page 7) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have had two refills of Adderall 20 mg that was manufactured by Teva/barr (Teva) and it seems to have much less medication in each pill. Refills by another manufacturer work. This is ridiculous, and where do we report Teva and who can check each pill for amount for medication? I would gladly donate some of my worthless ones to the FDA?

Thank you, Edward, for that answer to "Always tired". Now I know what to look for when figuring out where to fill my next prescription. I contacted Walgreens again today, rationally this time, and asked them how I should proceed with my concerns regarding the lack of efficacy on the TEVA prescription. Pharmacist said" call TEVA" not FDA, but she claimed that she was unable to provide me with the lot number or anything else due to "the large amount we dispense" and my script being filled 2 weeks ago.
Now, I have to wonder,
Largest chain pharmacy around
Computer age
Recent prescription

And they have no idea of what the lot number, batch number or whatever numbers would be used to give TEVA an idea of what I got from them??
Doubtful, but really kind of scary if it's true. What if there was a recall ?

And I still say Walgreens owes it to customers to notify if a change of brand is made and I would think Teva should have an obligation to its customers to notify them if the formula, fillers, binders, etc. Change.

I don't know, maybe that is just unreasonable, or maybe it was in a memo that no one bothered to read.

But no one will start to read those memos folks ...
UNLESS WE SPEAK UP!!

Everyone... At the very least, NICELY, CALL YOUR PHARMACIST AND TELL THEM SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT WITH YOUR MEDICATION AND ASK WHAT THEY RECOMMEND YOU DO ABOUT IT.

Seriously

This is an update to the Prasco brand Adderall XR post I wrote earlier this week in which I reported that it didn't work for me AT ALL but had bad side effects eerily similar to those I experienced on Activas brand XR a couple of years ago. Here goes, for those interested.

I called Prasco on Monday and spoke to two people in the pharmacological dept. who were very professional and sympathetic. They wanted the lot number which I had to obtain from the pharmacy, and Prasco said they would report it to Shire, along with other complaints they had gotten recently. Prasco only markets/sells it -- it is an authorized generic supplied by Shire, and Prasco told me it is the same thing as the name brand Adderall XR by Shire.

I then called Shire and spoke to someone in their medical area. I wanted to confirm that the name brand Adderall XR by Shire really is the exact same thing as the Prasco authorized generic, because then I would know not to throw more money down the drain to obtain a script for the brand name (in hopes I would respond better to it, as I had in the distant past). The Shire person was also very nice and professional -- and I'm sure telling me what she could within the parameters she was allowed. She said that Shire does manufacture and ship this generic Prasco brand and that it is the same as name brand, however, when pressed, she added that generics undergo different FDA standards than the brand. I kept asking for clarification on this, phrasing it differently each time, such as, "So they are NOT the exact same, correct?", and she just kept repeating that it undergoes different FDA standards than the brand, and also stated they are bio equivalent. I wonder if that means is that they can use different fillers, etc. What do you all think?

As I said in my first post, I also had seen in a press release news item from June 2016 that Prasco would take over the marketing of the authorized generic of Adderall XR from Teva (since Teva had made a deal to market the Activas brand, and had to relinquish the Shire deal.) The release stated, "Upon closing of its transaction with Teva, Prasco will immediately take over the distribution of the product, providing a seamless transition for both customers and patients." The release states the drug is "therapeutically equivalent" to the name brand. Is that the same as "bio equivalent" as the Shire person said?

That press release statement would lead one to think that the Prasco XR brand would be the exact same thing as Teva's was at least, as it said it would be a "seamless" transition, but I never had a bad reaction to Teva XR -- only to Activas, which Teva now markets. (Caution: Conspiracy Alert ahead!) All this info leads me to believe that I may have gotten the Activas brand. There is really no one in this wild west pharma world, including the FDA, that seems to care about protecting us from fraud, or at the very least confusion, probably because as long as the drug can somehow pass as "therapeutically equivalent" it is all a-okay. Oh, and mainly as long as investors are happy.

I know this is a long post, and I sound paranoid and obsessed on this subject, which I am, but I am pretty worked up about all this because it is seriously messing with my ability to function like a normal person and thus my livelihood and mental state.

I was going to ask my doctor for a new script for name brand adderall xr, but I found out my insurance will not cover it, (because we have these wonderful generic equivalents) and it is super expensive -- approx. $275 or more, and it would not count against my very large deductible.

So, my doctor suggested Vyvanse. I took it a long time ago and had to stop due to cost. I also found I preferred Adderall XR which was more affordable. Vyvanse will be nearly as costly to me now as Adderall XR brand, but at least the insurance will count it towards my deductible since there is no brand name equivalent. My doctor also gave me a Shire card for a free 30 day supply of Vyvanse, which was great I didn't have to shell out more money this month.

So far, the Vyvanse is working well. Definitely makes me feel normal, but I don't have that "kick in the pants" motivation to start tasks as I did with Adderall when it worked.

I hope this helps someone. Please let me know your experiences.

Hi Nurse, I truly appreciate your concern and understand what you are saying. And I agree my posts were very long and I had readily admitted sounding paranoid! When you pay a ton for these generic medicines and they don't have the same normal effect as their supposed name-brand equivalent, and yet the drug companies make it seem it is all in your head, it can make one feel paranoid! As far as the long post, that is me with or without medication, and I have always had the blessing/curse of hyper-focusing when it comes to writing. I should learn to make it brief. That said, here I go on another long post to explain myself!

When I said that Vyvanse doesn't give me the "kick in the pants" motivation, that was me trying to be shorter for once in explaining myself. Poor word choice and I can understand how that would alarm you. Some background: I was diagnosed with inattentive type ADHD as an adult in my 30s and I'm now in my early 50s. Like many other, I did not figure out this was my problem until my children each had the same issues in school that I had, and their teachers urged me to have them evaluated. I was affronted at first as I thought they were normal...just like me (ha!). My husband thought they were just little kids, leave them alone, but they were lagging behind. Then when they went through evaluations and were diagnosed, I recognized myself. Ever since early childhood, I have been naturally very spacey, day dreamy, and I overthink everything with big plans but I have trouble actually DOING them. My parents always lovingly called me a "scatter-brain" out of frustration with me, as they had no idea what my problem was. I also have always been slightly depressed and suffer from low self-esteem, I believe because of the ADD. Medication has truly helped in so many ways and I am grateful for that!

At any rate, I have never abused Adderall or any other medication of any kind, nor do I take it to feel high. I aim for normal and functioning. Taking the Vyvanse this past month vs. Adderall (which I have taken for years always at the same dose) has been an interesting experience. It has done great acting as an anti-depressant and I feel calm and level-headed. I love that, and the fact it is so much smoother than Adderall. I really wish I could just stay on it. If all I had to do were things I wanted to do and had no responsibilities, Vyvanse would be the medicine for me. But it only helps very marginally with my executive function. I feel like I have brain-lock and the cogs won't turn -- this is how I have ALWAYS felt unmedicated. Adderall (but not the recent generic brand I took) somehow gets my brain engaged and the cogs work as they do in a normally functioning brain. It reminds me of all those people I know that can have a cup or two of coffee in the morning and it is like what adderall does to my brain. How I envy them! (Coffee or any caffeine has never done anything for me except make me jittery and more spacey-- I tried it many times before ever being on medication.) My work is piling up and I am having difficulty prioritizing and getting things done. But, I am enjoying just sitting and visiting with people as if I don't have a care in the world, looking at the birds, petting my cat, etc. and not feeling stressed about all I need to do. And I should be feeling stressed or motivated but I'm not. Adderall, when it is working, gives me that focus and motivation I am missing. This is what the drug is meant to do for persons with ADHD/ADD. It would be interesting to know if Vyvannse works better for ADHD vs. ADD. Or maybe it is just according to your body chemistry. After speaking to my doctor about the situation, he suggested I try the name brand adderall this coming month. Even though the price is outrageous, I want to see if I notice a difference between the generic and name brand effectiveness. Will report back. Again, Nurse, thanks for your concern. I really do appreciate it.

Hey guys, I have been taking TEVA adderall since diagnosed almost 2 years ago and have been taking only my prescribed dose or none at all. Last month's refill (Dec 2017 in Pitt Pa) was fine however my next fill (Jan 2018 in Pitt Pa) was different. I felt sleepy and foggy but at the same time irritable and had horrible muscle cramps and dry mouth. Has anyone else noticed a difference? I am ready to try Adderall XR but have not done much research of the brands. I was actually worried because my normal pharmacy gave me their last batch of Teva in Dec BUT since going to this other pharmacy and getting this new batch of TEVAs makes me question what to get next because they flat out arent working. It is honestly a night and day difference. My diet hasnt changed, i get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, ect. My doctor is very open to my suggestions however I'm not sure what to do next... Vyvance is very expensive and get's such horrible reviews saying it's addictive and then i hear that Adderall XR is also pricy and does ZIP because Teva or prasco or whoever makes that too... Can anyone give me some straight facts? The funny thing is that I am probably better versed all on this than my doctor. Thanks guys

The side effects that you listed are exactly what I am experiencing. I am not just going to let this go. Not this time,... and not (again) in the future. I am sick of them screwing me over and simply getting by with this. Most of the cost is out of my pocket and I am tired of this. I suffer from an auto immune disease and that is bad enough, but when these guys decide to alter their formula on a whim it is exponentially hard on my health. They get away with this because the law has no teeth in it and also because it doesn't cause permanent bodily harm or kill anyone. However, it is a sham, or scam, for sure. Years ago, generics were difficult to discern from the name brand. That was their claim to fame. I tend to believe that the young management at the drug companies think that they have come up with a new or novel way of increasing the corporate profit. They have chosen to make a lesser product (less effective ingredients = less cost to manufacture) and get away with this because your health insurance can dictate what you get and even the brand that you receive. Now, the insurance enters into deals with these companies in order to save money. Therein creating a solid-dependable customer base for the drug company, no matter how bad their drug is performing. The individual has to settle for the crappy medicine. No free market shopping for the patient, and a contractual monopoly for the drug company. Then, factor in that these companies are absorbing all the other companies that manufacture this product, and you can see the results right here at this sight. You get what they decide to concoct. No ones medicine is even working as a generic should. They have lost their money to the drug company and got nothing in return. Just how many things do you purchase that you can not return if it turns out to be defective? ANSWER: Only medication. How convenient, huh?

I just filled my twice-daily 20mg IR, switched from the time release because it wasn't as effective. My pharmacist is great, he went above and beyond the call of duty to fill my prescription despite a shortage. However I noticed that some of the pills were pink and marked COR135. Fortunately it was a small amount because all they did was kill my appetite while not affecting my brain fog at all. I was very upset, but this morning I took one of the orange ones imprinted with the U30, and they work great. I may not need my second one this afternoon. Both are marked Teva on the bottles. But I'm worried because I have had experience in the past with the same brand and dosage not working month to month or sometimes pill to pill in the same bottle. Then I found this forum, and my thought is this: If a company is shady with their active ingredients, or they just have horrendous quality control or both, they're not going to only mess up one variation of pill. Why not muddy The Waters by messing up one this month and another the next?

The different milligrams must be different, because the 20 mg ones are just awful.

I haven’t taken them the last two days, I don’t want the side effects anymore.

Count me in. I've had enough of the worthless crap I've been getting from Teva for way too long now. Out of desperation to understand what was happening I've even requested a non-adhd adult try two of my 20mg IR to guinea pig it for me hoping it would give give me some insight as to whether it was me or the product. It certainly did. They said if they felt anything at all it was similar to caffeine from coffee or Exedrine. Please give me some feedback on what we can do about this. I have already filed complaint with the FDA. It's extremely frustrating because after doing that we have no idea if it's going to be productive or even amount to anything. I'll greatly appreciate anyone's advice on Alternate mfg. that are available and where I might be able to get those in Colorado.
Signed,

I also reported them and made an official complaint.
My generic Adderall is placebo no doubt. I told Teva how awful it was messing with peoples lives like this. This company is the first I’ve had any problem with. I’m hoping they will be investigated and shut down!!

Re: Tim (# 723) Expand Referenced Message

I so share your outrage Tim. First the hit and miss efficacy of the drugs we are prescribed. Second, that the FDA is unwilling or unable to provide adequate testing and QA. Third, that this is the result of political will due to the power of the Big Pharma lobby.

Sadly, I have no confidence whatsoever that this will be addressed in my, (shortened!!) lifetime. Unless proper testing protocols are required, independently confirmed and randomly checked; and until the penalties for drug fraud are immediate and permanent removal of the company from the market, the consistency of prescribed pharmaceuticals will remain the same “crap shoot” as illegal street drugs.

Pharma is dirty and the FDA is dirty. I've had 5 different generics, all affected me differently and with different side effects. I just got a new one from aurobindo and it's the worst yet. I have an awful migraine. I feel like I was poisoned.

I thought it was just me I'm glad to know that it's not. 100% correct it's b******* they're not working they were working all of a sudden in the last 6 months nothing I could take one and go to sleep this does need to be looked into

I actually have Narcolepsy, and Adderall manages my excessive need for uncontrollable sleep. :)

I went from perfectly functional, to dozing off at work, while driving, unable to focus on any daily tasks, on top of “withdrawal” symptoms such as headaches and nausea. I could tell immediately that my “medication” had no actual medication in it. When you take an amphetamine based medication for long-term treatment, you don’t just go from being completely medicated to zero medicated and not experience these effects. Hence, withdrawals.

I respond perfectly to aurobindo Adderall. No side effects. I function again. My pharmacist works with me to make sure I don’t take a medication that has me falling asleep during dangerous times.

I took name brand adderall for years and it worked perfectly. I’ve been taking the Teva generic for about five years now. I have experienced such a roller coaster of negative side effects and inconsistencies it got to the point where it was unbearable. I weaned myself off my ADD meds. I then tried to treat my ADD naturally without meds but the intense depression crept in. Being a mom and a wife I can’t afford to be depressed. So I went back on the Teva generic adderall again. It’s a constant battle and it shouldn’t be that way. One month I feel a little motivation and focus, the next month my mind is racing but I can’t seem to do anything productive, almost a zombie like state. The next month it’s working pretty descent but wears off after 2 hours. This roller-coaster is enough to cause someone to lose their mind. It’s not right! As angry as I am, I’m thankful for this chat because I know I’m not alone in this. I cannot stand that others are suffering but it’s validation for myself that I’m not completely delusional. There has to be something we can do to make this better.
