Adderall Backorder (Page 24) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI take generic Adderall 20 mg for narcolepsy and there is not one local pharmacy that has it in stock. I have never had this problem before. The pharmacies are saying that it's on backorder from the manufacturer. Is anyone else having problems getting their scripts filled?
Re: tim (# 1687)
I was supposed to go to Philadelphia for a business meeting. My direct flight was cancelled, then they offered me a 2 pm to 8 pm flight with a 4 hr layover instead of less than a 2 hr flight. I'm glad my boss said see if I can get a refund. It's been over a month without it, and seems my focus, motivation is getting worse by the day.....not to mention my mind constantly drifting and falling asleep. I feel physically ill and exhausted. Thank you FAA!!!!
If my flight wasn't canceled, I would have given our new CIO, director, and VP a baaaaad impression of myself.
Re: Jamie (# 1675)
Have you tried Costco for your Adderall? They have it every time I get a script. Try it. AND, they take GoodRx too which sometimes is cheaper than through your insurance. Get the app or go to their site and search your dosage, days worth and plug in your zip and they will give you the closest one to you. If there isn't one near you, they will list other pharmacies that 'should' have it. But, Costsco is a dead ringer for me. I'm near Grand Rapids, MI.
Re: Kenneth (# 1530)
Yes, it's ridiculous. And at the same time, while ADHD and narcolepsy patients get shafted by the FDA/DEA/alphabet soup's cutting the allocation of stimulants, the same agencies raise hundredfolds the amount of marijuana and psychedelics permitted for drug manufacturing purposes.
This is being done to provide new revenue streams: since almost all stimulants have gone generic or will very soon, while opioids and benzodiazepines are off patent and dirt cheap, stakeholders for pharmaceutical companies (who, by law, need to be satisfied FIRST, the patient is irrelevant) need to demonize/make unavailable/render less effective the established drugs, as we have been seen in the last decade. Then, the alphabet agencies accommodate the new "craze" (pardon the pun) of fooling the American public into believing that cannabis is a one-sized fits all panacea for every mental or physical ill imaginable ("just try a different strain!!!!") and psychedelics like LSD (which was thoroughly studied in the latter half of the 20th century and has been well documented as detrimental to the mentally ill) are "new mental health breakthroughs".
Being treated for ADHD was like someone with horrific vision receiving their first pair of glasses--the bifocals they needed all along. Not only does marijuana do nothing for me in any area, it has actually worsened any pain, anxiety, ADHD and Asperger symptoms, makes me non-functional, is generally nauseating and physically uncomfortable feeling, and I will not join the hive mind of the last few years, spouting pot-paganda, celebrating the ninth new " dispensary" opening its wares in my small town over the last two years, insisting that " everyone" can "learn to love" pot and stop the medications that have helped them live normally (ADHD meds in my case).
We live in Backwardsville, Clown World. Anyone else want a time machine back to the Shire Adderall era, or the Dexedrine Spansules era of neighborhood pharmacies and other small businesses that treated their customers like human beings?
Re: Anon (# 1716)
Now is the time to start putting back some pills each month for when there is another shortage at the end of 2023. The DEA reduced the amount of active ingredients they allow manufacturers more in 2023 than they have in previous years.
Re: tim (# 1725)
No, I've used this exact same location for the last 2 months. And it is day 32 since my last fill.
It's actually part of their policies, especially the big chains. If a patient tries paying out of pocket aka "cash" they consider it a "red flag." In my state, the pharmacist can not only have their license revoked but potentially go to jail. So like, I get it...
Being rude about it (the pharmacist over the phone, not you) was unnecessary, but whatever, I'm used to it at this point.
Look up pharmacy secret checklist. It's also been discussed at length on reddit's pharmacy thread. It's intended for opiods but due to the classification of CII's adderall gets included in there.
Re: bp01 (# 1727)
True. Power ?? & profit against the vulnerable. Few have seen or read the major study in Dec.,2011 JAMA.
Lack of knowledge leads to the secret lists of the self-righteous ignorant.
Dumping of an effective and evidence-based treatment into the bin of sinful, death-promoting killers like oxy. Mis-diagnosis and missed diagnosis. Barbaric, actually. Like the abject failure ?? of the 1970's "War on Drugs." It's failed 'legacy' lives on. Obscene.
I just saw this link posted on reddit.
Here's an excerpt:
"Issue (Adderall Shortages):
DEA received comments expressing general concerns regarding the ongoing shortages experienced with ADHD drug medications, specifically mentioning the branded drug product Adderall.
DEA Response:
DEA is aware of patient reports that pharmacies are unable to fill prescriptions for their prescribed Adderall or one of its generic versions. DEA consults with FDA to set the APQ for amphetamine each calendar year. The majority of the manufacturers contacted by DEA and/or FDA have responded that they currently have sufficient quota to meet their contracted production quantities for legitimate patient medical needs. According to DEA's data, manufacturers have not fully utilized the APQ for amphetamine in support of domestic manufacturing, reserve stocks, and export requirements for the past three calendar years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Based on this trend, DEA has not implemented an increase to the APQ for amphetamine at this time. Should the proposed established amphetamine APQ become inadequate to meet legitimate medical and scientific needs, sufficient reserve stocks, and export requirements, DEA has the authority and ability to adjust the APQ during the course of the year. 21 CFR 1303.13. DEA remains in communication with FDA regarding these shortage reports."

I think that last paragraph is pertinent, and gives me the slightest glimmer of hope that this will eventually get resolved or relieved, similar to back in 2012 when shortages arose due to an uptick in patients.
They treat you like a crackhead when you are trying to get your meds filled at any pharmacy that has them. If you take them to help you not suck at your job/school and not be depressed and anxious as well (female ADHD) of course we will look to refill when out 2 or more weeks. Big Pharma and Pharmacies treating us like cattle.
Re: bp01 (# 1732)
Thanks again for this reality -based post.
Re: Kayla (# 1745)
Hey Kayla, I'm in Jax too. Try cvs. I know for sure that the one on the corner of blanding Blvd & Collins had some. But if you have BCBS thru the marketplace they won't fill it.
Re: bp01 (# 1752)
I'll update about the Philadelphia area when I go try to fill tomorrow
On the 12th it will be one month since I was supposed to get my refill that I never was able to get. I'm in Colorado Springs and every other pharmacy also still has it on back order. I'm really struggling bad it's very hard to do my simple tasks.
Re: tim (# 1754)
So the Philadelphia area seems to still have good inventory for those seeking it, at least for my 30mg IR (Teva).
However I paid out of pocket for my 30mg XR as I wasn't able to find the generic at any of my three closest pharmacies... all three had the brand available, though.
I am in Jax and I am unable to fill my adderall prescription. I went to Walgreens and they told me it would take a few weeks. I am a student and have a big test coming up. Has anyone had any luck?
Re: Balagan75 (# 1762)
All three of my local CVS stores had 30mg available as of Tuesday. In particular, you might try the one in Warminister on York Rd & County Line Rd. is the largest of the ones I typically check and thus, usually has the most consistent stock.
Good luck!
Re: Kayla (# 1768)
Hey, Thanks for the response. I was able to get my prescription filled at cvs. Hopefully, I’ll have the same luck next month.
Re: Jenny (# 1779)
I've been hearing late April since December ( L.A) Already switched to Dexedrine ER. My insurance won't cover it unless i get a PA or try Ritalin. So i got Ritalin prescribed.. And that's back ordered now too. so i have 3 seperate drugs prescribed ( Adderall XR 20mg, Dexedrine ER 10mg, Ritalin 20mg) all waiting for availability. And I'll take whichever one gets here first. But they won't even tell me what they do have in stock that i can just pay for in cash. i can't ask my doctor to send a dozen scripts for multiple controlled drugs in various dosages and hope one of them gets filled. Assuming insurance lets me, because theyre the doctor and the pharmacy now lol
Re: Rcma (# 1758)
This is a good article. It pretty much corroborates everything I'd been told last week from a local store.
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/adderall-shortage-adhd-drugs-affected-will-end-rcna66766
To everyone else, my humble opinion is if you cannot find adderall in one place, your likely not going to find it somewhere else. The STOCK has run out and until the manufacturers can resupply it is GONE. If you're lucky enough to have a pharmacy nearby that can still get some then great! But I would bet they are running low and I do believe the majority of us have had our pharmacies tapped dry. You're going to have to wait it out or seek alternatives.
Check your pharmacy benefits manager on your insurance. See what's covered on the drug formulary list.
Make appts with your doctor. My doc wasn't willing to change my dose or meds until I made an appt.
Ask about virtual appts. My insurance allows for it and my LOCAL general practitioner is still willing to see me for ADD virtually. I was able to go from 1 month next appt to 1 week with a virtual one.
If you can't get in with your doctor, you might be able to try an urgent care. Make sure they have an M.D. on staff.
If you're in school, GET ACCOMMODATIONS. Adhd is very much covered under Ada disability. Get with your doctor, contact your accessibility department. It's just a simple form.
As far as employers go, Idk. But I'm sure your HR can help bc again, Adhd is covered under ADA. Which means your employer is legally required to accommodate you within reason. Read up on your rights. If you're struggling bc you're unmedicated, I'm sure some of us who were able to get meds won't mind posting some links to help. (:
Re: Mauricio (# 1804)
I know someone that was prescribed Dextroamphetamine 20 mg immediate release, four times a day for 25 yrs. The guidelines are only that, guidelines. It is common for insurance companies to require Prior Authorization when the dosage is high

The final outcome will be interesting. Please keep this discussion updated. Also include links to news reports and court documents
