Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 68)

Updated

I have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?

Hello everyone,
I felt really bad and sorry just reading from what happened to your family and friends who took this product. I, myself, have suffered from severe acne a few years ago and had been desperate enough to find solutions for it. Good thing this product wasn't recommended to me by my doctor. But my doctor's recommendations didn't totally solve my acne problem either. And then a year ago due to my desperate pursuit of a solution, I discovered Usana Health Sciences, a US-based nutraceautical company, they manufacture products that has a lot of health benefits from easing acne, detoxification, fatigue and addressing several degenerative diseases like what most of you mentioned. At first I was quite skeptical on nutraceauticals and supplementation. So I did a lot of research and found out clinical studies and journals about the science of supplementation. Given you take a QUALITY nutritional supplementation, it will bridge the gap from you unhealthy condition to your desired health.

Well, I wouldn't benefit anything from sharing this. But I think you guys should consider trying this. The damage has been done 'coz of Accutane. I think you guys should now focus on regaining and avoiding further damage on your health.

Thanks!

Hope you well.

I just read the article about the horse trainers nephew, very sad. It's either accutane will kill you while you're on it or kill you afterwards from the side effects. I went to a family function yesterday and had the worst anxiety ever. It was muggy outside so my face was a little flushed, my lips were purplish and same as my hands. I just look at all of them and wish I could be back to that. I threw a football around with my little cousins and had to stop because I was overheating and didn't want to exert myself. It makes me depressed to feel like this. Especially when all I was doing was throwing a little football around. How much longer will I be like this? When will it end?
I decided to finally order that DNA kit and it came on Friday. It should be mailed to them tomorrow and I will have the results back in a few weeks. I am so curious as to what they will say about me. Wonder how many things will say I am "high risk". Wonder if this is even worth doing? I'm also wondering if I should just go for it and spend the several hundred dollars to pay for the MRI myself. I have to wait just under a year for my appt. so do I wait it out, have them come back to me and say everything looks fine and be back at square one? Or do I suck it up, spend the money and it will either be what I'm hoping for or nothing at all. There has got to be an explanation to what this drug has done to us? There has to be and no one seems to have the answers yet. I curse these doctors for being so damn ignorant. They only want the money and do not care about your ongoing health. Just as long as it "cured" your acne. I wish this drug disappeared!!

Hey Andrea. I am also a sufferer. Can you please tell me how the DNA test or MRI turns out? I have all hormones in my body possible tested through my blood and everything is low but still "in range". I do not have the money for the brain scans and MRIs right now because I am in college.

Thank you Andrea. Keep in touch on here.

Hi Tom
Yes - of course I will let you know what I find out. My goal is to help myself and everyone else affected by this "medication". I looked through my paperwork last week and cannot believe the amount of bloodwork I have had in the past 10 years not too long after taking accutane. It is unbelievable. Most of them are within "range". But what is that? How do they know that is your "normal" when the range can be so broad. Anyways, I've been tested multiple times for vitamin d and those usually come in very low. I've had elevated androstenedione which was why I went years ago for a CT on my adrenals in case it was a tumor causing those high male hormones. I cannot wait to see what that DNA test comes back as. It was only $99 online and figured what the heck might as well give it a go and see what it might say. I just hope I did it right and didn't throw away my money. I am truly considering taking my line of credit and paying for the MRI. I also want my doctor to send me for a colonoscopy and a bone scan As Scott suggested earlier. I haven't had the time yet but I wanted to make sure I had the right info to print and show my doctor that no, I am not nuts. There are a lot of people out there going through the same thing as myself. With one thing in common "accutane". What are you dealing with for long term side effects?

Obviously this is years past, but you should have your son checked for celiac. Honestly anyone on here who experiences red face/red ears, bloating, any bowel problems should have themselves checked for celiac. Osteoarthritis is a sign of defieciency within the body and accutane has been shown to be linked in activating celiac.

Symptoms of celiac disease can include anemia, fatigue, weight loss and bone problems. Look up celiac symptoms and it can be linked to almost anything as it affects everybody differently, but its wide range of effects is why it is so elusive. Health radiates from your digestive track/ small intestines, which accutane ruins....

I was prescribed Accutane for spotting when I was 28 years old. Although not full on acne I had had spots since around 15 years old and at 28 had had enough. I too suffered all the common side effects of dry lips, eyes, nose bleeds etc but the worst was yet to come. I have a blood disorder (low platelet count so increased bleeding) and advised the dermatologist of this but he just brushed it aside. After 3 months of taking the drug I was admitted to hospital with a blood count of 400 due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Several blood transfusions, 2 endoscopies and 2 weeks later I was released from hospital with the bleeding finally stopped. This had never happened to before nor since. I told the Doctors I was taking Accutane and again was brushed off. None of them could explain why this happened but I know it was the Accutane. Now 20 years later at 48 I have developed an auto immune arthritis in my ankles - long term side effect - who knows? Please parents, really think hard about this before giving this to your children.

Eff.. I think my son has celiac as he stopped wheat and gluten due to his stomach problems. Unfortunately my mum was diagnosed in later life. His stomach is much better but he hates blood tests as this also makes him feel ill on top of joint pains, migraines and tinnitus ... Wish i could turn back the clock

Were you diagnosed with sjrogren's? How can we get a hold of eachother. I have sjrogren's, type 1 diabetes from Accutane. What have you tried. I would stay away from acidic foods also. {edited for privacy}

Actually, there are things that you can do:
Chlorella can clean out the accutane from your cells.
The Chinese herb, he shou wu (fo ti) is great for the liver and kidneys.
So is milk thistle.
Hyaluronic acid can increase fluid in all cells of the body, but is particularly good for the joints.
Devil's claw is a powerful anti-inflammatory.
Goji berries are a super potent anitoxidant and is resveratrol.
The mineral, boron, can help the body retain calcium in the bones.
You can obtain all of these cheap at vitacost or iherb

Dear Scott,

I am very sorry for what your son and others are going through. Whether or not everybody's health problems are caused by Accutane I don't know but regardless my sympathies. However, I don't believe you should try to ban the drug completely because some people with severe, truly disfiguring skin disorders including acne conglobata and acne fulminans need the only medicine that can possibly cure their disease. I am sorry that it's being given for regular, teenage acne but please realize if you try to get this drug completely banned some people who truly need it will suffer from pain and social stigma because they are so disfigured. Just think of Accutane like face transplants. Face transplants are dangerous and immunosuppressant drugs raises your risk for many diseases. However, the disfigured people thought the risk was worth it to have a normal life. You can't have a truly normal life with your face blown off or with your face full of painful cysts.

Sincerely,
Lana

Scott:

It's easy to say that chemotherapy and other related drugs should only be used only in cancer when you never experienced a truly, severe medical condition. We are not talking about teenage acne like your son had but diseases like Ichthyosis, extreme psoriasis which causes pustular plagues all over your body or bad arthritis pain, acne conglobata which causes not only severe disfigurement but pain from the nodules under your skin, rheumatoid arthritis, and etc. Please google image Ichthyosis, pustular psoriaisis, and acne conglobata to see what I am talking about.

Very disfiguring acne
blogs.smh.com.au/lifestyle/allmenareliars/archives/2007/05/pizza_face_the_terrible_scourg.html

Very similar to the acne I had before taking Accutane 4 years ago
vnf.me/cystic-acne/understanding-severe-cystic-acne

I am providing these links so everybody knows that I am not just talking about regular teenage acne. Accutane should have never been prescribed for mild or moderate acne because it is a powerful drug. However, people with acne this disfiguring should be able to have the choice to use Accutane.
