I have been on Tylenol 3's x 3- 4 tablets a night to be able to sleep through the night without waking in pain. I have been on this for 3 years and worried about the long term effects on my kidneys I am diabetic type 2 with severe neuropathy in feet and hands and also I have a smashed elbow resulting in a plate with 20 screws and a rotary unit (?) which is scheduled for a 2nd surgery in 3 weeks. The pain is unbearable and my Dr has prescribed percocet . My daughter is concerned and says the Tylenol 3 's are better for me than the percocet. Is this true? I believe I am in this for a long long haul.

The Tylenol 3 is milder than the Percocet, since it contains Codeine, rather than Oxycodone, but overall, the NIH lists the risks as being the same, as well as the side effects. They can both be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.
What other medications are you taking?

nothing more for pain but I do take meds for depression/anxiety . I am finding that although the oxycodone helps through the night it does nothing for the day. I am having surgery on Friday Sept 22 on the elbow and I am sure they will prescribe something for the pain then.
