Stop Taking Atenolol
22 Topics FoundDear all Medical Practitioners in this Forum. I am having mild Hypertension with a blood pressure reading of 130/90 at the most. I had been prescribed Atenolol 50mg/day and Nifidepine 3x daily. I did read before that Atenolol tends to give you Psoriasis and this had appeared on me somewhere around my right leg. Can I change this prescription later? Please advise me as to what are the best remedial actions to be taken before things get out of control. Thank You. ## Sorry, there are no medical practitioners on this site. However, if the drug is causing unwanted and unpleasant side effects, you should discuss it with your doctor. There are other options available that you can use. ## I stopped taking Atenolol on my own 2-3 weeks ago when I read about possible problems resulting in my decis...

How are you doing? Do you still have the edema? Is your regular doctor back, yet? Both of these medications can cause edema, so it's difficult to say which one is the culprit. As to stopping it, there can be risks associated with stopping one abruptly, as reported by the FDA, such as rebound high blood pressure and elevated heart rate. But severe edema also creates the risk of congestive heart ...
I have jAFib with accompanying shortness of breath and since taking Losartan 25 mg daily, the SOB has been much worse, I cannot walk 100 feet without having to stop and catch my breath. I also take Atenolol for low blood pressure. Can I stop the Losartan abruptly without any consequences? ## Hello, Joan! How are you? It would be best to consult your doctor and follow their instructions. It could be that your blood pressure is going too low, so you may need to adjust the dosage of one of these medications, or stop taking it. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and increased urination. Is there anything else I can help with?
Been taking (NEW) Diltiazem 180 mg 24 hr time release caps as well as tapering atenolol (was 100mg daily) had horrible symptoms so back on 25mg of atenolol with the diltiazem... can they be taken at the same time or should they be spaced a bit? For svt and BP control. ## Hello, Hyperdi! How are you? If your doctor has advised you to stop the Atenolol, then you should follow their instructions for stopping it. Taking both of them could cause your heart rate and blood pressure to go too low. What type of symptoms did you experience? You were likely experiencing some minor withdrawal effects, as well as new side effects from the Diltiazem. Typical side effects to is, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, dry cough and increased urination. ## ...
I was taking atenolol until the drug company stopped making them, and my doctor gave me metoprolol as a replacement. Is it ok to take metoprolol when i run out of atenolol? My doctor said it's ok, but I just wanted to double check. ## It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions. While there are no guarantees, it should be a smooth switch from one to the other. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. However, both of these medications are still available, at least for the moment. Where did you hear that Atenolol was discontinued? I am not saying you are wrong, because such information can change in an instance, sometimes it takes awhile for any given database to update. What I can t...
I started using Atenolol 50mg daily in January 2002. For years I considered it a "wonder drug" since it easily took care of my BP issues and had no noticeable problems with side effects. I started noticing earlier this year that my BP was fluctuating more than normal... almost like the Atenolol was no longer effectively regulating it. I also just didn't feel like "myself" though I was still functional at home and work. Over the Thanksgiving weekend I developed Bradycardia episodes... a very slow irregular heartbeat that was approaching 40 beats per minute. These episodes increased immediately after taking my daily Atenolol dose. After the holiday I went to the emergency room and was there for a night in the hospital for observation. All results came back negative inc...

Filed under AtenololI have hives and i am curious if there is any documentation on this type of reaction to atenolol? ## First of all, I would like to state that an allergic reaction, including a rash, is possible with any drug, that is one of the things that can happen when you are allergic to it. That said, yes, this is listed under the severe reaction section, meaning you should stop taking it and talk to your doctor immediately. ## I have been taking atenolol for five years and now I am having hives. the allergist and doctor dont contribute it to the medication but I am convinced this is causing my issues. did you experience the same,. ## I have also been taking atenolol for about 7 years. Everything has been going on fine all these years, but suddenly for the last 5-6 months, I am having allergies and...
Took for first time three hours ago as prescribed for bad mania caused by required large cortisone injections for acute arthritis pain. As prescribed (two 0.5 xanax plus two 5x325 percosets did nothing to reduce the manic anxiety and pain. Heart still racing and terrible anxiety continued. Took one extra 0.25 atenolol (have chronic mild atrial fibrillation, keep it on hand). Also took two more xanax and one extra percoset. Felt disoriented and sorta walking into walls for two hours. Now heart is fine, pain reduced, but I can't concentrate on Birdman and scared to go to sleep. It's 4 am...mouth dry. New to these drugs, and history of addiction to 30 years alcohol/fentanyl, but sober/clean for three years after seizure/coma due to cold turkey stopping drinking. Never do this again...
Have taken Atenolol 50 mg. for years then developed nasty cronic cough...Dr. switched me to Losartan 25 mg, is this equivalent? Experiencing sweats today and wondered if this was a lower dose then what I was taking and it is impossible to find comparsion of strength of these medications. Please advise and thank you! ## Hello, Bradly! How are you? Yes, since they are different medications, you can't really compare the dosages. However, the sweats are likely caused by stopping the other medication and starting the new one, just your body's reaction. But have you checked with your doctor to be sure? ## Have checked but not satisfied yet, all I want to know is Atenolol 50mg equivalent to Losartan 25mg? Another words if you were switching a patient from one to another would it be at ...
I feel my heart beating irregularly and I was taking them before but my doc said to stop. Why, I don't know? I went to 'a and e' and the doc said I had a slight heart murmur. ## My heart beats faster when I take amlodipine and atenolol together. Is this normal? ## I have been taking this drug combination of amlodipine + atenolol for the last two years but now my feet are swelling. Is this common? Is this a side effect? ## Hello Jackie, According to the National Institute of Health there are known interactions between amlodipine and atenolol. One of the interactions is to experience headache, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart beat. They continue to say that this is more common when starting to take the medications together or when you ...
i m 32 years old take atenolol for 15 would like to know what is the long term use of side effects??? ## Hello, Ali! How are you? Atenolol is a beta blocker that's used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. They can also be very harsh on the stomach and may cause ulceration or gastritis. Learn more Atenolol details here. However, that doesn't mean you should stop taking it, you should continue following your doctor's instructions and just make sure to see your doctor regularly, so they can monitor your health. Are there any other questions or concerns? ## I am used in aten 25 .i am change the tablet telmikind 40 ## Hi, I'm 6...
After taking first atenolol and then bystolic for several years, I've now been switched from the beta blocker to amlodipine. My cardiologist told me not to taper down the bystolic, just switch to the cc blocker. Today is day 3 (my last dose of bystolic was Saturday) and my resting heart rate is still ranging from about 49-55, even with coffee. How long should it take until the heart rate recovers to a more normal level? ## It may take a week, or two, although the Amlodipine could also lower your heart rate, as well as your blood pressure. The NIH lists its other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications? ## I'm a 68 y/o female on multiple Anti-Hypertens...
Are heart palpitations a common side effect of taking Clonidine with Norvace for controlling blood pressure when Atenolol is suddenly stopped? ## Yes, palpitations can be a normal side effect of these medications, according to FDA reports, it can also be a withdrawal effect from stopping the Atenolol. You may also experience headache, dizziness, nausea, and increased urination. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications?
please let me know the equivalent to amlokind at presently my bp is 170/100 i have stopped using amlokind at presently ## Why have you stopped taking it? Those are dangerously high numbers that put you at risk of congestive heart failure, stroke and heart attack. Amlokind AT contains Amlodipine and Atenolol, both of which are used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. I don't know if a generic is available for you, but you can ask your doctor or pharmacist about it.

I am taking Amlidopine and Bisoprolol for hypertension. I developed a rash on both ankles and a psoriasis like rash on my bottom. It is getting better after stopping bisoprolol for a week, but blood pressure is rising. what alternatives do I have? ## Hello, Aubrie! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having. There are many other options available for treating high blood pressure, including some in the same drug class, which as listed by the FDA is beta blockers, such as Metoprolol, Propranolol, Atenolol Nebivolol. My Dad is taking Tramadol in place of Darvocet. He took Darvocet for 20 years no side effects, now he is taking Tramadol and is good for pain but his blood pressure is going high and he has arrythmia and terrible depression. I think this pill has problem working with Paxil, Atenolol, Norvasc and Digoxin and should not be given together or adjusted. Why are doctors not aware of this and what else could he or should he be taking? Confused and upset! I f Darvocet cause heart attacks then why could he take it for 20 years without problems and now with Tramadol the safe one he's having all these troubles. ## Well, first of all, no medication is absolutely safe, they all carry risks. Now, the next question is, how long has he been off the Darvocet and did he stop taking it abruptly? Darvo...
I have been taking Losacar-H along with Amtas AT for the past seven years for my blood pressure. Now that my blood pressure is well under control, is there any harm in continuing these medications? ## While there are always risks associated with using any medication long-term, the risks to you are far greater if you stop taking them and let your blood pressure get out of control. Has your doctor been running occasional blood tests to check your liver and kidney function? If those tests show no abnormalities and the medications are still working for you, then there is no need to switch or change your regimen, unless your doctor advises you to do otherwise. Losocar-H contains Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. Amtas-AT contains Amlodipine and Atenolol. ## Thank you very much for your reply...
out of atenolol, my dr will not return til next Wednesday, can I take Hydrochlorot 12.5 mg? ## They are not interchangeable medications, since the Atenolol is a beta blocker and the Hudrochlorothiazide is a diuretic. Is there no one covering for your doctor and in his office that can help you? These aren't safe medications to run out of and stop abruptly. Learn more Atenolol details here.
