Xarelto Fluid Retention (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I had to take Xarelto due to two sinus venous thrombosis in my head. 8 weeks of heparin injections showed no side effects. But with the first day of taking Xarelto my body reacted by retaining water. Within the first three weeks I gained 24.46 lb hill exercising 5 times a week and eating as I always did. After retaining more and more water I stopped taking it after three months. I started with a weight of 120 lb at a height of 5''8 and now I weigh 157 lb. I have to ad that I started taking it in the middle of March and stopped taking it at the end of June. I was not able to loose any water/weight. I eat less than I always did before even while I exercise. All doctors couldn't find the one thing that changed through Xarelto. Has anybody ever experienced something like this while taking Xarelto??

Hey all! This will probably be my official last entry as I am finally on the mend & losing weight a bit faster now after 10 months off this devil drug! Here's what I know. While on Xarelto as well as 4 months post Xarelto I was pre-diabetic, had abnormal platelet count, and had high cholesterol 214 (my normal was 138). Now after being on a very strict Paleo diet for the last 6 mo & exercising every day my cholesterol is down to 180, I am no longer pre diabetic & my platelet levels are boarderline high instead of very high. I am going to continue to do exactly what I have been doing for 6 more months & get a complete blood work up again. I hope this helps everyone & good luck with all of your healing! The key seems to be discipline & patience! Never give up!

Hello, Germangirl! How are you doing? Very sorry about the problem that you ran into.

Did your doctor have you try a diuretic? It's a medication they can prescribe to help remove the excess fluid from your body.

As to the Xarelto, if you scroll down the page for it on this site, you'll see that most of the posts regarding it are due to odd side effects…

So, you're not the only person that had a very bad experience with it.

My husband has been on this drug for six months with the exact same symptoms. He gained 30 pounds within days! He has pain and swelling in his legs, feet, and hands. I have read all these reviews and it sounds like most still have the distended abdomen etc.My husband is still on this drug but demanding off of it. Has your problems resolved yet and what medication If any did you use to replace it?

My husband is now off Xarelto for two weeks and still on Lasix. He has lost 7 of the 30 pounds he gained while on this drug for 6 months. He still has swelling in his left foot and sparadically has bouts of severe pain in those areas. His abdomen isn't quite as swollen. I wish we knew how long it takes or what to do to help alleviate these problems.

I see I'm not the only one who thinks Xarelto caused weight gain. I am up 25lbs. I work out for an hour per day (Aerobic, weights, stretching) six days per week.

Yes, I take 20mg everyday. I have gained 24 lb. I take it for afib. Been on for 4 months. I was on Coumadin, but lots of nosebleeds. Now on Xarelto I gain weight, hips, knees and all joints ache.

So glad I Googled Xarelto and bloating to find it just isn't just me. I have gained 14lb since being on it. I even had someone I hadn't seen for over a year excitedly look at my stomach and nearly ask if I was pregnant (I could see it on her face and stopped her saying it ). I've been really conscious of it since. I have a review in Wednesday with my doctor which is a week before 3 month course of tablets finishes and will certainly be mentioning the weight gain and bloating.
I just hope I lose the weight when I finish the tablets but won't be holding out much hope now.

I was put on xarelto the first week in November when a DVT in my right leg was found. I started gaining weight right away. I have been on a new nut ricin plan for a year now. Went from 235lbs Jan 2015 to 180lbs Sept 2915. Now after being on this med I am back up to 200lbs and rising. I have increased my workouts. However I seamed to have lost a lot of strength having to use lighter weights in pump class. I have tried cleanses. Nothing seams to work. Just so happens I have been charting my body measurments for the last year. My abdimon is what has increased the most. The other side effect that has been prominent is insomnia, or more like super active dreams. Can't wait to wake up so I can relax and rest. I see the doc this week I am getting off this med ASAP.

Caveman I'm replying to you specifically b/c I noticed you too came to the same conclusion I did about the protein. I was on XERELTO for 3 mo for afib & I immediately started w/the same symptoms as everyone. The weird & oddly displaced water weight. It has been exactly 3 months today that I have been off of it & the water is still with me although 3 weeks ago I started taking 1/4 tsp of TUMERIC in my shake every day. I also have been going into a sauna every day for 30 min. These two things have started to alleviate some of the water b/c I can finally see my medial ankle bone again. I jog, eat right & fast as well. I am actually thinking about visiting a lawyer soon if this continues. I want to also state that b4 XERELTO I had a flat muscular stomach & muscular definition. Had I known that this might be permenant I would have NEVER in my right mind have taken this drug! Something must be done!!! This weird symptom is not acknowledged by any dr!!!

Hello everyone. I went to my dr who I trust & expressed my concerns about the water retention & massive weight gain (30 lbs in 3 months!) from Xarelto. He sent me for blood work... lots of it. Awaiting results. He also scheduled me for a Doppler sonogram for my leg supposedly it will show the Amt of water in my body & if it is isolated. I am going next week. I also had an epiphany today & was wondering if anyone has tried giving blood. Since red blood cells regenerate when you give blood maybe we need to flush some out to make our body replace with some new ones. I know they recommend it for people with thick blood. Just an idea. Think I will try it. I'll try anything at this point. Please if anyone happens to try something that works to get back to normal please share! We're all in this together.

Hey for all who are following this thread hoping for a breakthrough I don't have one as yet but I have been doing 3 new things for the last 8 days in addition to everything else. 1. I started taking b complex 100 solgar brand, 1 tbl spoon raw organic apple cider vin in water at night b4 bed (its supposed to stimulate the lymphatic system & detoxify the blood) & putting my legs up a wall for 15 min -night to attempt to drain the fluid from my legs so that it can be processed. (Also a lymphatic stimulator) I am optimistic about these new things. I hope they will begin to kickstart movement for all who read this. Good luck to all.

I started Xarelto 10 days ago and I can tell I've gained weight in my abdomen. A quick Google search helped me find this site. The swelling in my calf from my DVT has subsided as has the pain. Can I stop the Xarelto and switch to baby aspirin or do I have to stay on this crap for 6 months? I'm in the Navy so gaining this weight isn't an option!!

I'm so sorry Linda, we are all going through the same situation. Dr's don't acknowledge the permanent or at least semi permanent weight gain even after being off xarelto. It has been exactly 6 months since I have been off xarelto. My body is still not how it was b4 I started. We need to band together & form a legal suit against the company. Something happened to our bodies & someone should be held accountable. I'm sick of this!! Who's in??

Tndrhrt57 I think your totally on to something w/the lemon water!! For the last 7 days or since u posted that I've been drinking the juice of one whole lemon in a large glass of water every day on an empty stomach 2hrs b4 a meal & I have noticed the slightest change in my skin's elasticity as well as my calf size. My hunter rain boots used to be loose before xarelto, then I couldn't even get them on now they fit again! They are still very snug but at least they fit again! I am going to continue this ritual every day & check back w/everyone in 3 weeks. I urge everyone to do the same & let's check back in 3 weeks! GLTA!!

Good luck... I hope you find the right combination for you... Lemon water and I'm down 17 lbs since January... At least now I don't feel like an overinflated water balloon.

Get natural wellness ultra thistle. My liver test came back excellent! Are you also having spikes in blood pressure? I also found that eating nonfat other than avacado, olive oil, etc., (no diary fat or meat fats or trans fats, I did just tuna for a month), I lost 20lbs, but as soon as I had dairy or sugar or meat bang back on over night I found this causes extreme visceral fat and it causes my stomach to swell so much that it stretched the ligament in middle of my torso, so if i lay flat then lift my head off the floor as if to do a sit up my stomach comes to a point which normally is 1/2” to 1”, but mine is currently 3”.

I am currently on a extended water fast to try and help this condition. I have lost considerable weigh (down 20lbs), but my abdomen is still distended and I still feel bloated. It cannot be fat - it must be water retention.
I have another 10 days to go - I will let you know if anything changes.

I am a 52 year old woman on Xarelto for about a month. I had open-heart surgery almost four months ago for a birth defect and then an ablation a five weeks ago for an atrial flutter. I resumed exercise about three weeks ago.
I have gained 8 lbs in a month, despite eating an extremely healthy diet and exercising 5 days a week. I have water weight in my abdomen and I had a tummy-tuck four years ago!! It was a relief to find this discussion because I was exasperated—examining my daily habits—wondering why all of a sudden I couldn't control my weight.
Well, I’m back to the doctor on Monday and our discussion will begin with me getting off this medication. Then I’m doing a cleanse to get it out of my system. It concerns me greatly that even after others have stopped taking the medication, the symptoms persist. I hope this is not the case for all.

I have been going to Weight Watchers since February of 2014 (about 15 months) and I have averaged about a 5 pound loss every 2 to 3 weeks for a total of 90 pounds. I started on Xarelto on March 15th and I first gained weight and since I have maintained even though I am on the same diet as before and I am exercising at least an hour a day, sometimes twice that amount. I have lost 4 pounds since March 15th. I am convinced it is the Xarelto. It is the only thing that has changed. I haven't changed eating at all--same amount of Weight Watcher points per day and I am writing down everything I eat. I get off in October, I hope this isn"t permanent. I am taking 20 units of lasix a day and a couple days a week I am doubling the dose. I am definitely bringing this up with my Dr. next month.

I have been off Xarelto since the beginning of April and so far the weight I gained (about 20 lb or so in a little over 6 months) has stayed. I have "thinned" though, in my stomach (nearly flat) and face mostly but legs, butt and thighs stay the same even though I eat well and exercise. I can see he water that has accumulated there when I do some Yoga poses and it looks like watery cellulite, Yikes! Goodbye shorts this summer.

So far I have lost about 3.5 pounds but I have decreased in size quite a bit. I'm guessing the water is still there and I don't know how to get rid of it. I drink water all the time, and pineapple juice, I eat bananas and cranberries but the water doesn't leave my body. Going to have to ask my doctor for diuretics I think. Any successes on those?
