I take 80 mg of Lipitor and am a 66 yr old male. Feel terrible on it but my doctor tells me I'm at risk of a heart attack or stroke if I quit. I eat no meat, do not smoke, exercise, not sure what to do?

I forgot to refill my script over a week ago. This morning when I got out of bed, I literally fell back, luckily onto the bed. I felt so dizzy. I waited a couple of seconds and everything seemed normal and I got up again and once again went straight back down to the bed. Third time was a charm. However I had a couple of more dizzy spells when I went to bed tonight. That is why I am on here now. I don't think I will continue using and hope I get through these dizzy spells. I have had muscle pain and attributed it to being severely overweight. Today though I went outside and played basketball with my son and noticed I didn't seem to ache nearly as much. At this point I am thinking a lot of the aches were the meds. I will follow up in few weeks.

You are sounding just like me and what I went through. I told my family it felt like I was coming off of opiates or cocaine and loosing your mind. I am a retired psych nurse and the doctor wasn’t listening to me at all. Kept asking me what else was going on to make me this way!

I was taken off statin in october 2013 after complaining off arm ache.It was the worst thing i have ever done in my life.I had been on statins for over 10 years.2 days later all hell broke loose.I was waking up after a sleep in the morning after starting at 5 30am with my first job and i saw monsters in the lounge.getting upset and crying was another problem.my doctor has told me that i am having bad panic attacks.i started taking amitriptyline.which seemed to slow things down.I weened myself off the tablets. As i am typing this message i have had to come home from work after having 11 panic attacks.Up to this day my doctor thinks that taking me stright off statins is not the problem.

I am so glad I found this thread! My doctor put me on 10mg generic Atorvastatin several days ago. Today I started feeling flushed as if I had the flu but don't. My legs feel weak and I feel like I haven't eaten all day yet my diet was fine today. I do not have high cholesterol. All my numbers are great (TC=116). I sent my doctor a note but I won't be my nightly dose. He put me on it for the "protective" reasons. I had a cardiac calcium test at my yearly physical and it was a 20. I am 50 years old, am not overweight and exercise regularly. I don't smoke.

I have agreed to try another statin. I'm taking 40mg. Pravastatin with 200mg of CoQ-10. Unlike with the Lipitor, I'm now aware of what to look for in side effects. I really hope this will work.

Thanks teacart. I have an 'eat what I want' diet. You make a fair point, I have to take more responsibility for what I eat which would benefit all kinds health risks. I don't want to take statins and for now, I'm not going to. My doctor is so intense that he told me I have to see a cardiologist if I refuse to take a statin! Talk about scare tactics! I'll try and take more responsibility for myself and read more about statins. Thanks!

The question we ALL need to be asking is, "What the H--- are the makers of Atvorstatin feeding us?" Where CAN we get the answers?

Would never again take Lipitor or any other similar drug.

I had all of the symptoms before taking Lipitor. They got worse.! Nothing can be worse.
Perhaps your withdrawals were a result of already having the mental issues already being present.
Often mood disorders turn into conversion disorder.
Perhaps the withdrawals drew out more rapidly what was already there.
I'm saying this hopefully without offending you but I feel it has to be said because been there did that.
My Psych put me on Liothyronine Sodium.
My emotions quickly got unfer control and the Lipitor is out the door!
I quit hurting, headaches went away, on and on. Wild horses couldn't get that poison down me ever again.
Good luck

For me I noticed muscle soreness subsiding in 2 weeks. By 4 weeks off Lipitor i am muscle pain free.

Why would anybody quit statins cold turkey. Why not just take a half pill for 4 weeks and let the body and brain get use to the withdraw. Use some common sense people.

I quit cold turkey after 16 years on statins. I had NO side effects from quitting. In fact, all my muscle pain was from taking Lipitor not quitting it.

I just started cutting my Lipitor generic in half, from 40 mg to 20 mg. I realizing after reading these comments that I'm not reading since I'm on this since my stroke in Oct. 2009 when my doctors prescribed them. I plan on eliminating it completely and start taking ResQ 1250 which is as good if not better. The food that I eat isn't producing LDL cholesterol, so why am I still taking this? ...no reason.
