I did not imply that it took six weeks to Wean... Read it again...I HELD at each REDUCTION LEVEL for 4-6 Wks... It took eight months to fully wean (meaning I went 30 days past stopping entirely)
If you are consistent and don't cheat you will succeed. My method was slow but effective! It has been over a year now and I am BENZO FREE, without WITHDRAWAL PAINs

SLOW REDUCTION is critical to successfully kicking this demon drug... I was on it for six years then it took another year to wean completely. I did it by Excruciatingly Slow Reductions- first reducing the number of doses per day... and holding for 5-6 wks until you get to only at night....holding 5-6 wks or more before reducing again.
Additionally reducing by No More than .125 mg each time to AVOID the max withdraws... there will be some but not extreme if you pace yourself....
When I got down to one milligram at night only...I added melatonin 10 mg at night to help me fall asleep.
Once I got down to .50 mgs nightly I added Z-QUIL. ( or 25 mgs Benadryl, it's the same thing) in order to sleep... our worst enemy.
It took much longer to reduce from 1 quarter mgs down to Zero... When you are ready to do stop it all, BE CAREFUL..
.You must not live alone during this time because of the real possibility of Extreme Withdrawal Symptoms!
Especially if you reduce Too Fast. ..

But Today I AM DRUG FREE WITHOUT OTHER DRUGS IN EXCHANGE...
YOU CAN TOO ...BLESSINGS

It is going to take you a lot longer than 6 weeks to get off of Clonazepan! Try giving yourself 6 months instead! Or even a year! I can not stress how important it is to go slow or you will go nuts and I mean that literally! Your body is so used to that wicked stuff and your whole central nervous system has to get used to you not being on it anymore! You will have a ton of side effects from ears ringing, to eye flashes, to your skin being sore and even smelling from withdrawal! It took me from October until April to get off the stuff. It wasn't pretty but now I am free! You can eat right and take all the vitamins in the world but your body needs to get used to not having that poison in it. You are still going to go through a mean withdrawal and sleep will be minimal getting off of it! Good luck to you!

I've been on Klonopin for almost 2 years. I've tried 2 x to wean off. I'm back on the 1 mg again. I'm going to try to do the classic 6 week taper and see how that works for me. Eat right, fish oil, multi vitamin & exercise.

It's been a few weeks since you posted how are you doing on your taper?

Had been taking xanax 1mg for 15 years on a as needed basis for anxiety. I take Celexa on a daily basis for the anxiety/depression. I went all those years with no problems, never abused the xanax, didn't even take it every day. I did end up with a problem with the Lortab 10's that I took for a metal plate in my leg from an accident. Built up a tolerance to them and ended up taking 10 a day. Couldn't get enough from doctors or couldn't get them to give my anything stronger because that meant a CII narcotic. About a year ago I went to a methadone clinic to get off the hydrocodone and provide pain relief too. All that has worked out great except for the clinic making me switch from xanax to klonopin. They say xanax is dangerous when taken with methadone so they let you take klonopin instead. was told it was a long lasting benzo and I should take a 1mg pill every day for it to work properly. I should have done some research on it before i went along with it. Now I'm addicted to a nasty pill that makes breathing diffucult, keeps me coughing up flem all night, ruined my memory along with many other bad side effects. to top it off it doesn't give me the relief the xanax used to. I am in the process of weaning off of them but it's very hard. I can't seem to make it to the .25 a day mark without getting bad withdrawls. I make it about 4 days at .25mg when the sweats, headache, insomnia & other crap kick in. It's way worse than any opiate w/d symptoms. I'm going to keep at it and also keep an eye on this thread for any ideas and support from others. Thanks all for letting me share.

To Paul... I also wanted to add that maybe the K that you are taking isn't strong enough and maybe that is why you are still so depressed. My Dr. gives me Valium 10 (mg) 3 x daily and I have no anxiety. I was actually diagnosed with SEVERE anxiety and Depression. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear because you want off the drug completely and that is completely up to you but I was just thinking that the reason you feel this way is because you are on a low dose. Just my thought, you do what you think is best for you, but please, take it from me, don't just stop cold turkey, I promise you will regret it Big Time...Best of luck to you Paul.

To bUTTERFLYLADY, Hello, I know you are very concerned about being on a drug that is so addictive. I am a chronic pain patient and have been on many different types of Narcotics. My Dr. changed me from Xanax to Valium without any tapering what so ever but I did just fine. My Pain Dr. got shut down about 3 months after that so I had to find me another Dr. very quickly. I have been on different types of medications for about 18 years myself. I am on a variety of very addictive medications and I worry all the time about what would happen should this Dr. leave and I couldn't find another Dr. I finally just came to the conclusion that if that should ever happen then I would have to go tot he ER and tell them what happened. When my other Pain Dr. got shut down and I was without my medications for about 7 days I had no other choice but to go to the ER, they also treated me like the lowest person on this earth. So judgemental, when I can't help that I was in a accident that has messed me up leaving me on disability. The ER didn't help me so I had no other choice but to use Marijuana for the time I was off my medications. Thank God I did have people help me with my Valium or I would have more then likely went into a seizure.. The other medications would have left me with withdrawals from out of this world and I refused to go through them when it wasn't my fault that he got shut down. I couldn't believe how the Marijuana helped me so much. I wish this State (Alabama) would legalize Marijuana. People may say that Marijuana is habit forming and you have withdrawals from it but I know for a fact that I had no problem quitting the Marijuana when I finally got into another Dr. As far as your concern about what it may do to your body for being on it for so long, I sometimes think about that also but I know without the Valium I would be a nut case literally and I have to take it, so I just remind myself that since I happen to live in a State that prefers medications that can leave a person in withdrawals (that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy) and that are VERY ADDICTIVE that I just have to take them until I can afford to move to a State that cares for there people and knows that Marijuana is a plant that helps with chronic pain, anxiety, and many different health issues. Hope this helps...

Hi I have been on clonazepam since 1990 . The doc started me out on 1/2 mg and now I am on 2 mg and yes it's hard to get off from them.. I have even cut down on my dose slowly and still lots of anxiety and my face went all numb so I went to the ER also and they treated me like an addict but they gave me some till I saw my doc. So here I am still on it for 23 years. I am more concerned on what it will do on my body after so many years. I am scared so what do I do as I said I have tried getting off it slowly and no luck!!

You need to taper off Klonopin. Please don't cold turkey it. Find a good doc that can walk you thru how to safely do this.

Hi Paul
Do NOT stop taking Klonopin cold turkey. I don't care what the doc says. I wound up in ER. Doc was like" well taper off over the next week"! Not true. A good PSCHY should help you wean off. I'm now weaning off slowly. She said it can take months. She put me in Prozac to help with the transition. So far, so good. To all the dumb docs out there that perscribe this drug without letting patients know of harm should lose liscence. And for all the other docs that tell you you can wean off in a matter of weeks should too.

Hi Shell, my Dr. Told me to stop K, that it wasn't working, & he put me on Xanax. I have been having cold sweats, nausea, foggy head. I never thought about withdrawl. My Dr. didn't mention it. Did you manage to get through the withdrawals without tapering yourself off? These "moments" are terrifying, I don't know what to do? Is it possible to go Cold Turkey? I am afraid that it won't stop or pass. What are your thoughts?

To Chronic Pain patient Eddy Paul and all others like me who fell victim to klonopin/clonazapam: Medical Marijuana (mainly vaporizering) saved me... CBDs have antispasmodic benefits that prevent the Seizure side effects of Withdrawal from Benz o's. I ONLY speak of my own Successful results when I testify to this claim although so many others and Scientific results concur with my opinion. .. God speed to your recovery Debra

I was on .5mg of Klonopin for sleep for 2 years. Then doc increases to 1mg. When I went thru a tonight anxiety period I took about 1.25 for about a month. Then I stopped abruptly and wound up in ER. Heart pounding. Heart rate 125, blood pressure 160/95 . And shaking , muscle cramping, total anxiety attacks. I was almost having a seizure. The ER doc told me to go tak the .75 dosage right away. I did and all side effects stopped. This scared me so bad and now I can tell if I'm in need of my dose. I start shaking. Please get a doctor to help you taper off. Right now I'm on 1mg and doc said she wants me to wean off slowly.

Paul and to all CLonazapam and all other names they use for this terrible drug! I am finally FREE AFTER 8 years of being Dependant on this horrible drug. I am Drug Free WITH NO SIEZURES. It took me a year to wean from 2 MG down to ZERO without prolonged Side Effects. Due to a misdiagnosis from a doctor and a miss-prescribed medicine, I suffered a 7.5 minute long Grand Mal Seizure in 2003 and was put on Clonazapam. I lost 15 lbs, was depressed and crying daily... had mysterious ailments and then, in 2007 my blood platelets began to drop...

In 2005 ran out for Four Days and suffered a 3.5 minute long seizure minutes before I was about to get in my car and drive on the I5 Freeway! I could have been Killed and/or Killed other innocent people too. I slowly weaned see past post to learn how reducing by .125 mg each 3-4 weeks according to symptoms intensity. IT TOOK A VERY LONG TIME, with many setbacks... BUT as of last OCT I began my last reduction and succeeded by December 2013!! It is now 90 days later and I am Free. I still have issues with sleeping through the night, but I use Z-quill and or Melatonin and I have been having good results. DO not try this without them... Lack of sleep is our worse enemy when it comes to BENZO addictions.

Among other things I suffered extreme weight loss, (I was down to 92 lbs at one point, healthy is 113) and my platelets were dangerously low, I looked like a skeleton... and was a basket case emotionally. Now I am healthy again back to 113lbs. and generally Positive all the time. I have my life back and you can too...

I began having seizures during the weekend and was placed on .5mg twice a day until I could see a neurologist the next week The neurologist prescribed Lamictal 150 mg morning and 400 mg at night which was fine but he did not remove me from the klonopin. ( if he had I would not be dealing with this situation.) I have been informed taking the Lamictal and the klonopin was a duplication. Now after being on both for 5 years I am trying to get off the klonopin. ( I had began having dizzy spells and passing out and came to the conclusion it must be too much of the same medication. ) I asked dr. about coming off and he told me not to change anything as long as what I was taking prevented the seizures. I reasoned if I was passing out and loosing control of what was happening to me regardless I might as well get off the klonopin and see if things would improve. I went to a doctor in Charleston S.C. and he compounded klonopin drops that would allow me to decrease my dosage on a schedule that I had control over. My schedule has been 6 drops for 4 weeks, 4 drops for 4 weeks and now on 3 drops for 4 weeks. I have still had side effects but have been able to hold the level for more weeks if needed. I have possibly approx. 2 months to go before I am completely off. Conclusion - It is wise for folks to have a good understanding of their medical care on their own (easy inform. regarding drugs prescribed on the internet. I am not saying self diagnosing but research the meds prescriped by doctors to know what you are dealing with. I was amazed that one of the side effects of Lamictal and Klonopin is seizures! I actually found out about the klonopin and Lamictal being double dosing from my pharmacist. She was surprised a doctor prescribed taking the two at the same time. I am just suggesting checking out med's before taking. It is good to get a second opinion and good to know what you are being prescribed. I assure everyone I will research a medication before taking it from now on. signed Dizzy from dysfunction.

Thank you for your support, especially about tapering by .125 rather than 1/4. I've set up a schedule and will be reducing dosage by .125 every 4 week so that I take it very very slowly. What I don't want to do is go so fast that I end up having to increase the dosage and then be taking a step backwards. Thanks again for your support!
