Some posts mentioning methadone say that it gives you a high. It can but if it does, your taking too much! The nice thing about Methadone is you can go directly from your opiate of choice to Methadone without waiting for withdraw. In fact, when I went to my clinic they checked to make sure there were trace opiates in my system before giving me methadone because they don't like giving methadone to people who are just looking for a high. In most clinics, after a month, you get two take homes, after two months you get three take homes and so forth. After going to my clinic for two years, I take home an entire month. But ALL of my drug screens are clean. As soon as you give a bad one, you lose that take home privileged. Also, if you travel, they will usually give you extra or you can dose at a visiting center. Life has been infinitely better ever since.

not much more addictive than heroin but withdrawals last 21-30 days rather than 3-5 with heroin or most opiates. When I went through detox they had to use oxycontin to get me off suboxone. I wish I had just stayed on heroin til I was ready to quit cause the silicone is WAY harder to come off of

Linda, I’m a disabled vet and was put on some very potent pain killers and even though it took care of the pain, mentally and emotionally I just couldn’t except the fact that the first thing I had to do in the mornings was to take my pain meds and if I didn’t take them, I felt like you know what. So I was on 10mg oxy 3 times daily for about 2 and a half years and decided enough was enough. So I went on a suboxone program and poof……This may sound unbelievable because I have a hard time believing it myself, but after the 2nd day of taking suboxone, I started feeling sick and immediately stopped. When I stopped taking the suboxone, I didn’t go back to taking my pain meds. So my pain was enormous. However, I had absolutely no withdraw symptoms after I stopped taking suboxone and my pain meds and this was after 2 and a half years of taking 10mg of oxy daily, 3 times a day 7 days a week. So to me, that’s a miracle.

Look some of those posts are very misleading. It is a remarkable and easy way to stop using opiods, however, you will still feel withdrawal effects although they won't be nearly as bad as quitting opiods cold turkey. Especially if your taking more than a quarter of suboxone in a 24 hr period which I'm sure you will, at least in the beginning. Bupenorphine is extremely powerful and that's why the max mlgm in subs is 8. Best way to get off with feeling the least withdrawal symptoms is to taper off like some posts say. Example; start with a whole one or whatever your prescribed depending on the amount of and drug you were addicted to, then when you feel annoyed that you have to take something which is generally a couple weeks or months also depending on the amount of time you got used to taking an opiod, but anyway that time WILL come, then cut the strip either in half or just take a quarter less than usual, and repeat until you can take a quarter or less and still feel ok. At that point you can probably just stop taking it but TAKE YOUR DOCTORS ADVISE, don't rely on people on the Internet to tell you what's right or wrong. Please understand, unfortunately, you most likely will still go through some sort of withdrawal it's just the nature of the beast. Example; you may sweat a little more than usual or you know something along those lines, which is still a lot better than quitting opiods cold turkey. Also, if your buying them from someone with a script or something illegally you should stop. Don't be embarrassed to ask for help. Everyone needs help in some ways, no one is perfect and plus it's a lot cheaper to get a script legitimately than purchasing them from someone. Good luck to all reading this and trying to help themselves. Go to their website or talk to a doctor, don't listen SOLEY to people on the Internet. Some people say things and are just guessing or trying to use common sense and can't articulate what they're trying to say which in return makes their statements very misleading despite their best intentions. Again, good luck all and I hope your very successful in future endeavors.

I have been on suboxne for two months today. I'm sure it's different for everyone but my experience has been great! Lets say the day before I first started suboxone (a Friday) I got high as a kite. The next day was my first appointment (Saturday) , and my first day on suboxone. Now I was only a day into withdrawal but the suboxone (I only took half a strip at first) helped me IMMEDIATELY. The only thing I noticed concerning withdrawal was that I always get a severe migraine but although I had that I IMMEDIATELY felt like my old self. I'm prescribed a strip and half a day but I usually don't have to take the whole amount or sometimes at all. The doctor recommended me to use suboxone for two years. The doctor will come up with a specific plan designed for YOU. So just take the step and try your best please! It will be worth it! Imagine getting your life back and feeling NORMAL without popping a handful of pills. Good luck!!

Ash, sounds like your on the right track and good luck with your recovery. I'm a bit surprised though at the length of time your doctor recommend you stay on suboxen. Why 2 years?

@Frank. The way it was explained to me, as we all know, that after doing opiates your opiate receptors are "larger " then normal. I have been addicted for several years and the doctor explained to me that from his experience a patient that was using as much and for as long as myself has a high relapse rate if they try to wean you off earlier than that. My treatment plan is to take the 12 mgs for 9 months and to start weaning after then. I also go to addiction counseling and cut off all contact with my ex "friends "so I have less of an urge. If you don't have insurance suboxone can be expensive (I pay 100. Or so a week) but it is WORTH IT! And a lot cheaper then using!

I don't think anyone has still addressed the original topic of the post. The way the doctor explained to me, it works like this; everyone has opiate receptors, when you use opiates whether it be pills heroin etc your receptors get larger and take more to fulfill the larger receptors needs I guess you could say. As in I started out with tiny little lines and by the end had to do at least four bperk thritys just to get well. So long story short your tolerance goes up. The suboxone works to shrink these opiate receptors back to normal size and blocks the cravings and withdrawal caused by your receptors freaking out. Now the most important question; is it addictive? Yes! Some people claim you are switching one drug for another....think of it this way. Opiate addiction is a real MEDICAL DISEASE. LITERALLY. Your doctor is treating you for a disease and proper treatment includes suboxone. The relapse rate for an opiate addict is around 85% without suboxone. It is addictive, it has opiates in it and an opiate antagonist. How the science works I have no idear ...I'm on suboxone and I would say that yes I'm addicted to it. BUT (this will explain my two years better) I'm on a full dose for nine months and the remainder of my two years is spent slowly weaning off and learning to cope with out having drugs or something to replace drugs. There are some people who are on it their whole life an Example being someone who's been a heroin addict for twenty years...quitting suboxone would be to big a chance to relapse. Like I said before your doc will set you up with a plan for you! You may consider suboxone a drug but lets face it I feel a lot more comfortable going to my docs office and getting my prescription the legal way compared to slinking around with shaddy folks.

Suboxone can be the best route for lots of people suffering from addiction. The problem is the doctor needs to be licensed to prescribe it. I think it's an 8 hour course. They also start patients out on 8 to 16mg! That's way too high. You should always take the least amount to control the wd symptoms. It's supposed to be a temporary fix too. But people stay on it for months, even years. Is anyone even thinking of reducing the mgs yet? It only takes a few weeks to adjust to the lower doses. That's the good thing about suboxone. You can get relief with barely 2mgs. And the "generic" is just as bad as heroin. Subutex has no opiate blocker in it. As with any addiction, slowly reducing the amount taken, is the best route to go in my opinion. Even if it takes a year. If someone needs 15 percs a day, do you really think they'd miss it if they took 14.5? I doubt it. Then stay at 14.5 for a few weeks and reduce another half, even a quarter of a pill. Yes, it takes a while. But by slowly reducing the amount every few weeks, a month, eventually you're off and clean and you did it with the least amount of pain as possible. Same with subs. It's NOT a long term med. Once you're on the right dose, the doctor should be discussing reducing the mgs already. Good luck to those on the sub treatment. :-)

I disagree slightly with this subutex for one is only prescribed to pregnant women because suboxone is not safe for an unborn child. There is NO GENERIC for suboxone call any pharmacy or doctors office and they will tell you the same. Suburex and suboxone are TWO CHEMICALLY DIFFERENT MEDICATIONS. I was doing what CMJ recommended and taking less then my prescribed dosage ....the problem with that is when the doc weans you off! He can't wean you off of next to nothing. Plain and simple.
