Suboxone Abuse (Page 6) (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy son has been on suboxone for over 1 year now. He was a herion addict for over 12 years. Been clean off and on during that time. I have seen a personality change in him which is almost intolerable. It is like he is fine one minute and then goes off the wall the next. Has anyone who has been on suboxon or knows someone who has been seen a personality change.
I am writing in this forum to be a warning to those considering this horrible "miracle". im living on hell right now. My husband is detoxing off suboxone and this is waaayyy worse than heroine psychologically. He's paranoid really bad, having hallucinations, can't sleep, has rapid heart rate, high blood pressure.....this is just the beginning. Im ready to walk away from this insanity!! He was only on 4 miligrams and we dropped him down to 2mgs and he's freaking out. Good luck getting off.
Ok...lets get real!! Im 58 years old. I came to terms with the fact that I would forever love certain drugs. Realize .. that to live your life with other people in peace and harmony you will need to find something to appease your brain and live without the stress and problems associated with your drug needs. Be it methadone, pain management .. whatever legal works get with it. Give yourself and other people around you a break. Its just life...get on with it.......
As an addict myself and also a parent, I feel almost a responsibility to reply to this post. There isn't a cure for opiate addiction to date. When I first heard of Suboxone/Subutex (not much of a difference there), I was elated. I thought and prayed that there was a "cure" for me. However, we were all misled by both the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies. You are exactly right in your evaluation and conclusion regarding your sons behavior. I am prescribed pain medication for a valid disorder and became addicted approximately 20 years ago. I now use suboxone or subutex to get me through the times after I run out of my prescription. I also know heroin addicts who do the same when they cannot find their "fix". It (suboxone) is only a replacement drug, much like methadone, NOT a cure of any kind. If you find an honest doctor to discuss these medications with (Suboxone and Subutex), you will find that they were never intended to be used for more than 5 to 7 days to fight the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. It then boils down to sheer willpower and the desire to lead a clean and productive lifestyle with the assistance of extensive drug rehabilitation counseling. After years of research on this subject, hoping to find that "cure" I have found that the best type of rehabilitation includes extreme physical activities such as white water rafting and skydiving. I know this sounds absurd and most definitely quite costly, but I have read that many of the rock stars and movie stars seek this type of treatment. The adrenaline rush from such activities is supposed to produce similar chemicals in the brain while keeping your mind focused on something other than the drugs. Whatever you do, do not give up on your son...I see that has been approx. 3 years since you have posted and I am hoping that he has made positive changes in his life. I know that there other parents in your situation here today and I hope that this information can help someone. Suboxone/Subutex/Methadone...NOT the long-term answer...hard work, love, and prayer are good places to start. It is a long and difficult journey from there.
Suboxone, Methadone, these are all supplied by the government. My son was just court ordered to take Suboxone, but my daughter, who he lives with, has to lock it up so he won't sell it or abuse it. Something is terribly wrong with these traveling medicine show cures, and if he doesn't take it he is in violation of the courts. We are not getting to the root of the problem and I certainly don't have a solution.
Zlovergirl, wait until it's time to get off them. It's a real b****. I'm almost done, it's taken me quite a long time and sick alot. Suboxene has opiates in it that's why you feel soooo good. Wait until the dr. says well we better start getting you off this. You will be sorry you took that first one. At least that's the way I feel.
I was dependent on Oxycodone / Oxycontin and Xanax for more than 10 years. About a year ago I started to misuse this these legally prescribed medication I went cold turkey on Xanax without considering the consequences. Within a month I started to shoot the Oxy (never shot anything before in my life) and a strange thing happened I lost control! I had taken the meds as prescribed for chronic pain and never had cravings or over use them. As a result of shooting the Oxy I developed an insatiable obession to use and when i ran out early I started shooting heroin! TOTAL INSANITY - Now the - GOOD NEWS - after a detox stay in Jan and than again in April They send you out after 5 days with nothing GOOD LUCK becasue there is a 2 week waiting process to get an Out patient program I finally made it to one the second time out. I started Suboxone and I have been clean for 2 months now and feel OK! The doctor at the OP won't prescribe for pain and at 8 mg 2x a day it is helping with the pain a little bit. My Pain Management doctor says 24mg - 32mg would better treat pain but I do not want to go there. I would rather stop the suboxone, so I don't want to take larger doses. I have started to cut down and am really not having a hard time doing so. I am sure everyone is different. I feel a little sick cutting down, but it is nothing in comparison to 30mg Oxy 5 - 6 a day, or heroin in my experiance so far! in addition to the outpatient program and seeking alternative pain Management therapy and I also attend AA. I am an alcoholic and I certainly need help with my attitude, outlook on life and the alcoholic behavior! Looking forward to a better life ONE DAY AT A TIME!
Am I missing something here? You say you take them for a condition? I have a condition that prevents me from even thinking about extreme sports for the rush. Impossible for me!
@ Debbie... U need to educate yourself before you act like you have walked even a 0.1 of a mile in any of these addicts shoes... IT is a Disease! YOUR CLUELESS LADY!! Do some research, or better yet go sit in some NA meetings Lady. Suboxone has saved so many children from sticking what might be that next LETHOL Dose in a Vein!! Ignorance is Bliss!
My son, age 27, just started using subs. Was on pain meds for a back problem and was supplementing his scripts with street drugs. I think he is still using street drugs (oxy and Percs) along with the subs. What could happen with these combinations? how can he get off all of them, assuming he wants to.
He is the only one who can decide to quit.
let's hope he will be smart enough not to OD and be careful.
You are not alone. I hope you have found a way to live without the "prescribed method". Good ole AA or NA is your best bet.
Good luck to you. AA saved my life too. There is a good life waiting for all,of us out there :)
Suboxone is Buprenorphine HCl and naloxone HCl and is typically used for opioid addiction. buprenorphine is an opioid antagonist and naloxone is a agonist. Go to Wiki or google for the details. i believe that there is a potential to overdose when taking Suboxone and heroin.
Well said! Another "latest & greatest cure"; we've been down this road before. Those that succeed in kicking a habit usually decide and go "cold turkey"! Most of these opiate substitutes are for "official" pain management entities and are always more costly than the last "latest/greatest" agent.
JKT - I am a little confused with these posts and the order of replies> it is not always clear. For who is your post?
I spent 7 months in the hospital . One of the results was a massive narcotic addiction . After a few months out of the hospital I went to an addiction doctor to get suboxone . This guy was pure scum . He could have cared less about my situation . He just wanted my money .
I was able to develope some connections in my ctiy's blackmarket and was able to buy as much suboxone as I needed for CHEAPER than I could get them legally .Therefore I told the addiction doctor to go to hell ...where I'm sure he will end up ....and got my subs from the blackmarket .
I still have a perscription for narcotics...and take them when I need them .....and use suboxones so I don't have to go thru withdraw in between pain issues .
I have no problems with mood swings etc . Suboxone is a life saver .
glad you are getting better but i have a question. if you are using your pain meds as perscribed why do you go into withdrawal?
If I was using my pain meds as perscribed I would be forced to take them EVERYDAY . I'm not in pain all the time...maybe two weeks in a row....This has been going on for four years . I take the meds , switch to suboxone for a few weeks once the pain subsides . If it wasn't for suboxone I'd be forced to stay on the narcs so I wouldn't withdraw . Make sense ?
edzll
Yes, makes sense. Thank you. Hope you get totally out of pain soon. Best wishes.
Doesn't make sense to me switching back and forth and the suboxone should help with pain, When switching to suboxone you should be withdrawing from the opiates otherwise you can experiance precipitated withdrawals. Why not just take a 3 - 4 day holiday from the opiates every few weeks, and stick to the one medication.
