Suboxone Abuse (Page 5)

Updated

My son has been on suboxone for over 1 year now. He was a herion addict for over 12 years. Been clean off and on during that time. I have seen a personality change in him which is almost intolerable. It is like he is fine one minute and then goes off the wall the next. Has anyone who has been on suboxon or knows someone who has been seen a personality change.

MY fiance takes suboxone and she is incredibly moody and intolerant when she does. She can be sugar sweet one moment and then totally irrational and saying the most hurtful things the next. She uses suboxone intermittanly for pain control, though she took it years ago for pain killer addiction. When she takes it for more than two days in a row it is readily apparent from her demeanor and actions. I hate the person that she becomes when she takes them.

You'r son dont want to get better! sounds like he is using the suboxone as a safety net and/or a way to make money to buy heroin!

That is a stupid statement! If taking one or two suboxone a day keeps you out of the ally buying heroin every day and night you can get enough money for a bag then it is cleary a step in the right direction! You are probably just an addict and that is the excuse you use so u feel better about shootin up!

Suboxone has not been an easy ride for me, I don't like the way it makes me feel. I think it changes my personality. BUT I had been on prescribed pain meds for too long and my tolerance was thru the roof. I decided it was time for a change. I got really sick at one point and the er doc treated me like S***. When I told the nurse I was upset she said I was on subox because I had abused my medication. My doc and I talked about my changeover for at least a year and it was my decision. Some doctors just suck (ER) and they don't know what they are talking about. love it that they know so much about me without ever bother interviewing me.I only plan on staying on low doses of suboxone until all that other crap is our of my system. Are there others out their having a hard time with this treatment?

I had been taking oxycodone, ovycontin, xanax and lamictal since 2003 for chronic pain, anxiety, and depression as prescribed! Unusual for an alcoholic/addict! After surgery in May 2011 I fell apart no longer had a prescription for xanax went cold turkey, compensated with taking more 30mg oxycodone than prescribed, July 2011 started shooting the pills 1st time ever than started using heroin when script ran out early. I have been reading about Suboxone and am scheduled to start induction this Tues. I enjoy reading experiances however it seems like people have a wide range of both positive and negative experiances and it reminds me of how this is the same as with any drug. Who had little or no Sub withdrawals and who had withdrawals worse than Oxy's and heroin. Everyone chemistry is a little different and we all respond differently. I wish some people would just post their experience without being so judgemental. It might turn people away. And at this point in time for me it's about harm reduction. If I am not shooting, exposed to arrest and jail for heroin posession and I can manage chronic pain with a less addictive narcotic than its worth an honest effort.

I just went in for the very first appointment with a substance abuse center, and the first thing without knowing me or anything about my situation suggested I switch from norco to subs for pain management. He talked about alternative methods of controlling the chronic pain due to fractures in the back. And immediately suggested another drug. I have heard many negative things about subs, never anything good. Stated there are grants to help or pay for the medication. I felt like that a social worker should not be pushing another potentially addicting medication right off the bat. I feel that this is a drug they are over prescribing because of the cost. He also was quick to say there was no side effects of subs, as in getting high! Then why are they selling them on the streets? I said no to the idea, I am not going from one medication to another that has such bad press as well as such horrible detox possibilities. We have inpatient rehab in our town and they have Doctors come in from out of state to run sub clinics out of a Hotel meeting room for refill scripts. All he does, flies in and holds the clinic. I know this to be true because I work at one they did it out of one and only one time. When we found out what was going on, with the line up of 15 to 20 people rotating over a 5 hour time frame, all talking about carpooling to the next town over because they have a 24 hour pharmacy. Yes it was legal, we checked. We also told the Doctor that we would not have him back. Ran his little clinic at night! Its all about money, I am sure not one of those people that came to see him paid cash, I am sure they all had medicaid or something like that. Or the grant money the social worker spoke of. So I pass on any drug that makes so much money they can fly around Docs and hold a script clinic in a hotel.

Sorry you feel that way. I am sure this forum is meant for support where others share their experiance to help themselves and others so I am not going to debate the Big Pharma all about the money concept, however isn't it all about the money on the street? And almost all drugs are bout the money. There are many natural herbs etc... that we are never told about because the Pharma can't patent mother nature, and they wouldn't spend money on trails to support positive findings, but they are out there and just as any other drug you will find people who swear by it and people it did not help. As far as what you may or may not here about Sub we all repond differently to medication and it's my belief not that to try a treatment because somone had negative results is no different than not seeing a movie that somone else did not enjoy. My point is that it's fine to report experiances with a particular medication, but it is not right to make generalizations that might have others believe it would do the same to them, and therefore never give it n honest effort. I start my induction on Tuesday and wish I could have started yesterday! I am optimistic and I think that is a good start. I expect positive results, and look for support from others who have had success with this treatment too! I could care less about Big Pharma and the $$$$ and on that note I can rember times when I thought the qulity of the heroin sucked nd a freind doing the same stuff thought it was great! Explain that?

I am currently taking suboxone to overcome a 6 year addiction to (prescribed) pain medication. It seems that many people reading this forum are looking for advice and/or answers about either starting suboxone or getting off--My 2 cents is this: If used as a PART of a total recovery program, including therapy relevant to your own personal needs (ie: group meetings, one on one treatment, ect) suboxone can be a very useful tool. It does eliminate cravings and withdrawl symptoms but absolutely can be abused just as any other drug. I do believe that Dr's are quick to prescribe it and will continue to do so until you ask to be tapered down. You basically have to have your heart set on recovery to be successful with this drug. As far as the withdrawl from suboxone itself--You will feel as badly as you expect to feel. If you are tapered down slowly, the pyschical effects will be minimal, I think the difference in everyone's experience has very little to do with chemistry and more to do with the ideas that are firmly planted in your subconcious mind. It takes more than a single miracle drug and will power to be clean. Proper nutrition, adequate sleep and the absolute belief that you are a whole, healthy, functioning human being are keys to success! I tell myself that I feel better and better each time I cut down my dose and because I honestly believe that, it's the truth. I can not wait to be completely substance free and enjoy my life without medication. Suboxone isn't the answer for everyone. But if you are sincerely ready to recover your life, and willing to take an honest look at yourself and your choices, it may be the first step in the right direction. I hope that this helps!

Reply to Debbie: I don,t know if suboxone is a scam or not but it helped me. I,ve abused drugs since my teens and I,m in my 50,s now. I started taking subs. about 7 weeks ago. I know I,m just swapping one drug for another but the subs. have given me the time to slow down and think about what I have to do to get clean and stay clean. I,m not allways thinking about my next high or running around trying to score. I,m gonna get off subs. within next month and half and have started the taper. Anyways thats all I got to say.

I totally agree with you, these pills have given so much trouble. I wish I would of never taken the first one, but I was so very sick.

Wow I thought I was the only one! I am 42 have been voluntarily putting myself in rehab for alcoholism since I was 18. Even completed an 8 month program. Was drunk within the week of the graduation. I have always taken the occasional tab or vike but never was addicted to opiates...until I moved to panama city beach florida about 3 years ago and fell head over heels in love with a little blue pill. Funny thing is I took them to relieve hangovers. After about 2 months my desire for alcohol dwindled and my desire 4 roxies escalated. Moved back to alabama when things got out of hand. Very little money and no connections led me straight to the methadone clinic. After about a year moved on to suboxins. I know it's time to start tapering from the suboxone but I'm worried I will crave alcohol again. I have 4 dui's. How crazy is it that I struggled so many years to get sober and opiates( not just any opiates:methadone and suboxins) completely take away any cravings for alcohol.

Hi I've been on suboxone now for over 6 years, I was one of the first people in my area to get on it, my life has progressively decayed even on this "miracle drug" yes I'm not rippin and running but I seem to fall back into the same bs constantly, I just had a baby with girlfriend 10 mnths ago, what a blessin, and we moved and stopped the games, now my life is much better, I have a job and my son is clothed and fed and growing like a weed, what I'm trying to say is you have to change your self and life along with your drug use and only then will your life and this drug actually work for you

Sam, I agree with you totally. I too am tapering off. It's a little uncomfortable but I am going to do it. I'm a little older than you, but have a work related injury and money is my problem. Worker's comp won't pay for the subs and here in Ohio there are $7,50 a piece and $200 for the office visit. It's out of this world. I'm down to a quarter of a pill a day. Few problems with my stomach but I will do this. Good luck to you!!

I pray you get this although it's been years since u posted. Is your loved one still abusing? I'f nothi g else has worked; 12 step etc. there is a solution. It worked for me, an abuser of 20 years after everything else failed. Google "passages malibu". There is a book put out by this re-hab center titled "The Alcohol and Addiction Cure" that can and will CURE his disease. Everyone says its NOT curable yet lable it a disease. It IS a disease and There IS a cure. And it's found through reading this book. Unlike anything I have ever experienced this book helps find the underlying causes that lead to addiction. The drugs are covering something so deep so painful that only the sensation of them seem to make everything okay. I hope this message finds you, and anyone else looking for the cure.

Passages I always see the commerical and have always wondered about it but am skeptical because they claim to have a cure. Twelve step programs and treatment do encourage getting to the root of the problems and relapse prevention, so what makes this book so different? Thats wonderful and encouraging to hear that your sober after such a longtime of using. It would be interesting to hear about what you learned and how this approach to addiction has worked for you.

Black Merc,

Are you sure he's shooting the subs? Most active addicts that have suboxone around use it for when they can't find their DOC, or when they're trying to detox. That's usually why it's sold on the street. Other than the placebo effect you really can't get high on suboxone once you stabilize. It's possible if you always stay well below the ceiling level to feel some euphoria- but it's nothing like the actual users DOC.

Honestly, for the active addict there's much more desirable drugs to shoot, snort, or swallow than suboxone.

I am writing in this forum to be a warning to those considering this horrible "miracle". im living on hell right now. My husband is detoxing off suboxone and this is waaayyy worse than heroine psychologically. He's paranoid really bad, having hallucinations, can't sleep, has rapid heart rate, high blood pressure.....this is just the beginning. Im ready to walk away from this insanity!! He was only on 4 miligrams and we dropped him down to 2mgs and he's freaking out. Good luck getting off.

Ok...lets get real!! Im 58 years old. I came to terms with the fact that I would forever love certain drugs. Realize .. that to live your life with other people in peace and harmony you will need to find something to appease your brain and live without the stress and problems associated with your drug needs. Be it methadone, pain management .. whatever legal works get with it. Give yourself and other people around you a break. Its just life...get on with it.......
