Side Effects Of Neurontin

I was wondering if anyone has ever had any diabetic problems after using neurontin. I had to take it for nerve damage. I have never had any troubles with my blood sugar until after I stopped taking it. Now I have serious sugar problems. I am only 28 yrs old. My mother also had nerve damage in her arm and was also on it. After she stopped taking it, she started having extreme problems with her sugar. The thing that surprises me is that there is no history of diabetes in our family and suddenly we both end up with it within a year and shortly after stopping neurontin. Has anyone else had these problems? If so, please contact me.

Your Md should have been monitoring yur blood sugar while on neurotin. Ican be one of the side affects are you on any other meds that could cause this-some treatments for bi-polar syndrome also cause the same side effect.

Neurontin/Gabapentin has been known to cause hyperglycemia, which is in essence a pre-diabetic state, the state may then develop into full diabetes, or it may go away, if you've been careful with your diet, and exercise to help control your blood sugar.

Weight gain is another side effect that could be a contributing factor, but there is also no way to know if this would, or would not have occurred even if you hadn't been taking it. Many diabetic cases are not hereditary, they develop due to medications, a sedentary lifestyle, and/or a bad diet.

How long ago did you stop taking it? It may take awhile for everything to return to normal, once you stopped taking it, so things may still improve in the future.

What action has your doctor advised?
