Same family - benzodiazepines. Available in 10, 15, 30 & 50mg tablets, its onset of action is very slow, so no good for acute panic attack. Best for those would be diazepam and alprazolam, bromazepam, lorazepam and nordazepam, which are all very fast-acting, I find 2/3mg alprazolam fastest. However, if you're not using bromazepam, then my advice is to do what I do, which is take 3mg alprazolam to deal with the immediate symptoms, and at the same time or 10 mins later, take TWO Seresta Forte or other 50mg strength oxazepam. It gives you several hours of calm, not brutally sedating like diazepam, more like the smooth feeling of a couple of 12mg Lexotanil or Lexilium tablets, to help, when it begins to be felt about 45 mins to an hour after taking, with the crucial few hours of horrific anxiety that another is on its way, or, like me, that I'm going to die. Ok, I know panic attacks don't kill you but try telling me that while I'm having one or for four or five hours following one! Sorry, nobody can convince me I'm NOT at risk of imminent heart attack and death.
This condition, called thanatophobia, is also well treated with LYSANXIA, normally two 40mg tablets. It is prazepam, generally agreed to be the least sedating of all benzodiazepines while being an excellent treatment for that kind of severe anxiety. You can carry on with your day and not be totally physically and mentally sedated or suffering slurred words and difficulty walking which an equivalent dose of diazepam or nordazepam would do.
But oxazepam, despite taking longer to act than almost any other anxiolytic, is very, very effective at keeping you calm in mind and body and will give 4-6 hours of lovely peace of mind after a disturbing or thanatophobic panic episode.
For a general use to treat anxiety disorder the standard dose is 30mg four times daily. When it is constantly in your system you don't notice that it takes ages to take effect, you'll still be having residual effects from your previous dose.
A good choice if you don't want what I called 'brutal' sedation like with diazepam, the absolute worst member of the family for that kind of thing. Even at low doses it's far too sedating for me, and the dose I'd need for my problems would turn me into a cabbage.
Oxazepam & bromazepam are the two I find most useful.
