Need Hycodan - Can't Get It Anywhere? (Page 2)
UpdatedMy dog needs this medicine every day due to a collapsing trachia. I have been told that it's not being produced anymore. Does anyone know where I can get it???
Thanks!
My yorkshire terrier had a collapsed trachea and a stent implant at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and the operation was a success. She was prescribed hycodan as a cough suppressant. She later developed pneumonia and the hycodan dosage was increased, which resulted in my needing a refill. I was able to get a refill prescription from my local vet but discovered by calling all over the city that it is a controlled substance and is not readily available at pharmacies such as Duane Reade. I was able to get a refill at the Animal Medical Center. I would recommend asking your vet where to get the prescription refilled.
A side note- my yorky does not like the taste of hycodan and I am running out of options for giving her the pill. She has rejected the usual peanut butter, rare roast beef, etc. I will request the liquid form on a new refill. I find it easier to administer than the pill form.
NEVER use Roadrunner....disorganized, and person named Brandon who is apparently a pharmacist is just a rude little creep.
I was able to get hycodan at the BestPetRX in Manhattan and it was refilled under the tussigon name. My yorky is on other medications also prescribed for humans and I am in the process of finding Canadian pharmacies that refill prescriptions at a much lower price. I have found it advisable to research the pharmacy before placing an order since some are scams.
I have been unable to get Hycodan in tablet form. My vet prescribed Hydromet Syrup which is the same as Hycodan. However I have a problem in that my Sheltie will not go near it. I can't give it to him in any form. He is on a strict diet and so I can't give to him in his food as it is dry food. Anyone have any ideas on how I can solve this problem.
I agree, try the smaller pharmacies. I tried all the local major pharmacies for Tussigon for my Bassett Hound with inoperable lung cancer with no luck. But a really small private pharmacy close to my house had it.
Dont you have to have a prescription from your vet to get any of these medicins? So why dont you just get it fro. Your vet?
I just got it for my pom from Hope in rockville, md.
I need Hycodan for my bronchitis. Having trouble. It's really bad, my chest burns. Can you give any advice please? Thank you, Alex
We just had an Rx for Hycodan filled by our vet. The staff told us that the regulators have eased up on vets and they can now fill it directly. Also, check for generic--Hycodan is essentially hydrocodone, also known as Vicodan and other trade names.
My vet does carry both the liquid and the pill forms of the hydrocodone/homatropine (aka Hycodan, Tussigon etc) but charges an arm & a leg for it and my baby needs it several times a day. Any assistance for a pharmacy would be greatly appreciated. (Foster & Smith don't carry it & that's where I usually get their meds). Thank you. Blessings.
If I can't get hydrocodone for my dog my, Vet says there is nothing else to give her.
Is this true?
Adam,
NO.... It's you that isn't aware that these meds ARE NOT just "people meds" as you put it?? This medication is given frequently to dogs with coughs of various nature. In fact, what you refer to as "people meds" is nothing of the sort. My dog has a hurt back and has taken Neurontin, Robaxin, Prednisone and now was prescribed THIS medicine!! And YES IT IS a narcotic and though you are fully correct in saying this, I'm not understanding what one thing has to do with the other?? Narcotics are OFTEN given to animals who are in a great deal of pain, just as they are given to us. Guess you weren't aware of this?? I had A Great Dane yrs ago that hurt her back really bad and was in excruciating pain and she was actually put on Morphine patches for a period of time and it worked great until her back had a chance to heal. There's no such thing as medicine for "people only", as there are many many meds that we can also give our beloved fur and feathered kids!!
Costco carries it. I had a difficult time in the beginning and just found one Publix (not in my area) that had some left but was not going to reorder. Finally, I found out that Costco carries it. It's a pain because they are at least 20 minutes away and the parking lot is always crazy. Also, my vet cannot call it in. I have to pick up a new script each time and then go to Costo and then wait at least 45 mins to an hour to have it filled. But my baby is worth it!!
No this is NOT true. Your vet can call any compounding pharmacy and have them compound something called Torbutol that is also used for cough in dogs. This is what my vet did. However here in Florida, it was actually the Torbutol we weren't able to get, and why she had to just have it actually compounded for my dog. We were able to get the Hydrocodone down here, but it just didn't work as well for my dog. Best of luck to you and your baby!!
YES. This was where our vet was able to have my babies Torbutol compounded. They were very good about it and even sent him a little stuffed toy in the shape of a big capsule!! They were very nice and helpful.
Wal greens carries the medcine
We also have a pom that was taken off his med because of the backorder and possible discontinuation of the med. No one has it here but I never thought of Wal mart. I will try them asap. We are using benadryl with little effect. Our guy is 14 and is so bad he can't eat sometimes. Amazing how blas'e the vet has been. I get so mad !
I just put my dog on it and I got it from my vet here in BC Canada.
No you can't. I just tried. That's as detailed as it needs to be.
We have a pom with a collapsing trachea also. We are having a terrible time finding the hydrocodone homatropine. Believe me, we have called walgreens, walmart, cvs. Our vet isn't able to get it. We found a cvs in Merrillville, IN that almost had the amount we needed and they gave us all they had. We took him to Purdue Lafayette Vet which is very specialized. They said he is not a good candidate for the surgery because he is diabetic, overweight and 9 years old. To us that is not old. We have tried for years to help him lose weight, walks, lowfat food and treats. We have 3 other dogs who are not over weight . Anyway, we are having a terrible time finding the med. I will try costco, I pray they have it. Thank you all. It helps to see others trying to find answers also.
