Need Hycodan - Can't Get It Anywhere? (Page 3)
UpdatedMy dog needs this medicine every day due to a collapsing trachia. I have been told that it's not being produced anymore. Does anyone know where I can get it??? Thanks!
There is a medicine called Torbutol. It's much better than the Hycodan for a cough in dogs. However your vet will need to call to have it compounded. There are many pharmacies that do compounding, they'll just need to find one. There is one that mails it to you that my vet uses. It's called Roadrunner Pharmacy. This is the phone number. 1-877-518-4589. Your vet can contact them and ask one of the pharmacists what they need exactly and they'll give them all the info. My dog takes it and it works beautifully. However a word of warning and PLEASE take this VERY serious. On the first dose PLEASE only give about HALF of the amount prescribed just in case. I think it is quite strong and if the dog isn't used to it, which obv it's not, it can REALLY do a number on the poor baby. I thought I had killed my dog the first time! I gave the amount ordered and he was out in space somewhere. His eyes were glazed looking and fixed. His breathing was fast and very shallow.. Oh I was hysterical I was sooooooo scared. I just started trying to rustle him up, rubbing on him and shaking him, calling him etc etc and he came out of it. So I'm just telling you this as a "just in case" and not to scare you as the medicine works wonderful. I'm just saying to START LOW ON DOSAGE AND ADJUST FROM THERE!!! To this day in fact, I STILL DO NOT give my dog the dose ordered which is .25ml. All I give him is from .10 to .15ml and it works great. So no need to give so much if you don't have to. BTW, my dog weighs 10lbs. Well I hope this will help many many people out there dealing with this very problem. Good luck.
I was able to find a medication that came in a good sized capsule. I pulled the capsule open, dumped out the med that was in it, wiped it out with q-tip and filled the capsule with as much syrup as I could. I put the capsule back together and was able to get my boy to take the capsule with food. It took 3 of them to make a dose but it worked. Don't spill any syrup on the outside or your dog will smell it. Also, the capsule will start dissolving pretty quickly in contact with a liquid syrup, so you have only five or ten minutes to get it in your dog's tummy before it leaks.
Some vitamin pills come in decent size capsules, so that's a good place to look.
Also, there is a pet hospital chain called Blue Pearl. If you are near one if them, they have no problem getting Huffman for canines.
Depends what it is for. Its an opioid pain reliever but may be compounded with homatropine, an anticholinergic that helps with a cough.
I don't see why oxycodone wouldn't work for pain. Most pharmacies carry hydrocodone but it is mixed with acetaminophen (tylenol) which is bad for dogs (brand name vicodin) That's why vets use the homatropine mix and its rare that pharmacies carry it.
There are many options for pain so it really depends on the condition you are treating.
PLEASE SEE MY REPLY TO THIS ON NOV. 10TH!!! There you will have all the info you need. It doesn't get any easier than this and Torbutol is TEN times BETTER than the Hycodan with the Hydrocodone in it for COUGH. IF this is what you're trying to treat, then BELIEVE ME PLEASE and give the Torbutol a try. It cough stops immediately. Your vet just needs to call in the dosage info to the pharmacy I've given the info to in my previous post. It's called Roadrunner Pharmacy and it's in Arizona I think if my mind isn't playing with me! Lol. They are awesome and they even send your baby a little stuffed toy each time you fill something from them.. They specialize in compounding meds for animals and are very good. They can even overnight it to you if you need it really bad right now and in the future you just need to call in a refill at least a week ahead of time to get it on time. Make sure the vet puts several refills on it too BTW!!! So as not to have to go thru all this every month! It's easy as pie the medicine works so much better for this type of cough in dogs than the Hycodan stuff everyone is trying to get and or risking their dogs life giving them medications for humans without knowing the correct dosage etc etc etc. It's sooooooo easy! PLEASE INFORM YOUR VETS ABOUT THIS.... although I honestly can't imagine any vet NOT knowing about this? I hope many will see this second post about this??!!
Thanks. Torbutol is a partial opioid antagonist called butorphanol or brand name Stadol. What I read about it says it has powerful antitussive properties (alleviates cough)
Unfortunately, my dog has a heart problem. His mitral valve is failing so his right atrium has enlarged and is pushing on his trachea activating his cough reflex. He also has an arrhythmia and his heart isn't pumping efficiently so pressure backs up in the pulmonary system causing fluid to build up in his lungs. The hycodan has hydrocodone to help control the cough reflex and also homatropine, an anticholinergic that helps stop the fluid secretions in his lungs that also cause his cough. I don't think the Stadol will accomplish the same thing. He is on 5 medications to control his heart condition. After a few days on the meds, his cough stopped completely. It was only after I ran out and couldn't find anymore hycodan that his cough returned. I found a pharmacy that carries a hydrocodone/homotropine syrup and his cough is disappearing again. I'm familiar with butorphanol (torbutol) and may mention it to the vet, but the hycodan has been so effective and hydrocodone is a pretty safe medication that I don't want to upset the apple cart. I just want my boy comfortable as his heart valve cannot be repaired. Hopefully I've gained 9 months to a year or two with him and will give him what he needs to be comfortable until the condition gets too bad and makes him suffer. I already dropped over $1200 to take him to see a doggie cardiologist and internal medicine specialist. I would think they know which medications are best for his condition. Thank you though. I may try it if they say it would be effective

Re: susan (# 7)
Hydrocodone is a controlled substance (opiod). Are you for real pretending not to realize this?
