My Prescription Was Stolen Now What? (Top voted first)

Updated

Me and my wife recently had a birthday party for my son. After the party I went into the bathroom to take one of my suboxone and i noticed the perscription was stolen. I have not reported it to the police or my doctor yet. I am not sure what to do. I dont want to ask my doctor for a replacement script because I dont know if I can get kicked out of the program. This program is the last chance for me to get my life straight and it is working so far but I am scared if I dont replace them that I run a risk of relapsing. My next appointment to get my regular refill is three weeks away. Has anybody ever delt with a situation like this or have any real advise on what to do?

Jane,

Suboxone does, in fact, NOT get you high. This is not an opinion, it's fact. Suboxone is a partial agonist, it actually blocks you from getting high if you were to attempt to use while on it. Outside of the initial stabilization period that is normal with ALL meds (not just opiates) suboxone just makes you feel normal.

Opinions are great, but present them as that, your opinions, as opposed to facts. Especially when you obviously haven't taken time to actually learn the facts

I have to disagree with the first poster. What if the person who stole your pills OD's and dies? You have to file a police report and if you have been a complient patient your doctor will replace your prescription, but you need the report first. I am a recovering drug addict also, but suboxone didn't work for me, I have been on methadone maintenace since Jan 2001, almost 10 years, and I keep my bottles in a lock box, locked, plus I put the lock box in a small safe I have hidden. If someone took my methadone and died, I would be devistated. People who know you are on opiate replacement know you have them in the house and they are going to look for them, that is why you need to lock and hide them..I know how you feel because I have been there with people stealing other drugs and I always thought the doctor thought I was a lier, but hey, the best way is to tell the truth, If you truly are going to change your life, this is a good place to start..PLEASE don't buy the drugs on the street. believe me, that is old behaviers and you may be tempted to buy your opiate of choice instead..I hope everything works out and let us know what happened..

im sorry but methadone isnt anything but a strong pain reliever too, and yeah i guess suboxone didnt work for u because is doesnt make u feel high like methadone does and 10 yrs ? are u serious i was on it for 4 yrs and changed to suboxone because my lil girl used to ask why i would set and knod off all day. suboxone just makes me feel normal without withdrawl. it almost killed me and sometimes i want to go back to methadone, just because i want to get that high and to the guy who got his meds stolen most drs offices will take a police report and give u a new script but u will have to pay out of pocket for it.

Must make a police report. I know several people who have done this several times with no backlash at all.

I have had a new perscription stolen the day after I got it.It was a family member.Since I knew who stole them I didn't report it to the police, nor did I confront the person, but I did tell my Dr. what happened, and the reason I didn't report the theft.Since I was his patient for a long period of time, and was always honest with him,he trusted me.He just changed the dosage and I was able to get another refill, which I promptly put in a secure locked location. It was a painful experience to have a family member steal from me.It hasn't happened since, but if they know were I hide them they would not hesitate to break into a locked box, locks are to keep people honest, addicts are sick people, not neccaseriously bad people.

tell me about it. i broke my humerus last july way up in the mountains where i live and am on sub they had to take me out on a gator and was giving me everything they had available and no pain relief.that was my biggest fear when getting on an opiate blocker!so needless to say a rod a 9 screws later i was in hosp for 5 days,no sub,and on a morphine pump plus 2 perk 10s every 4 hours and still had no relief. that was the worst pain ive ever had and still have.

BL is so RIGHT!!! With the state of prescribing guidelines these days your opiate unfilled prescriptions and filled prescriptions are going to be the targets of many thieves. Because of the lower prescribing amounts opiate pills will be worth alot more money, so not only will addicts steal them, but non-addicts too to sell them for alot of money. Always call the police immediately if either are stolen or the doctor won't rewrite your prescription. I'm sure if it happens several times in a short time period your doctor may refuse to prescribe you any scheduled drugs at all. Get a lock box or safe and keep all keys hidden and tell no one the combination. I have a smaller biometric safe that opens with my thumb print. I paid $300 for it. It's mounted to the concrete floor via 4 bolts in a closet so no one can carry it off. I did it myself by drilling 4 pilot holes via a template that came with the safe, it was easy and I'm not a handyman type person either. My best advice is... If anyone asks you what you take for pain tell them Advil or Tylenol. It's none of their business! Telling anyone you're taking an opiate might get your home broken into or even worse get you or someone in your family killed! Like I said before these new prescribing guidelines of less pills is going to cause more criminal activity and you need to be safe about it. It's no one's business what you take and you only take Advil or Tylenol!

You are the kind of person that I have a huge issue with. If you haven't been there you don't know what you're talking about. Suboxone is a great medicine for those of us who don't want to die shooting up. It is supposed to be a program that eventually tapers you off. But addiction is a lifelong battle and a disease and for a lot of us suboxone is taken for much longer than first intended simply because we use it for pain management or just to no that if we have it in our system we won't be tempted to do dope. The person that's been on them for 10 years could very well have a pain problem and instead of getting hooked on pain meds that will eventually lead to heroin again is using suboxone under his physicians care legally. Some are on it for life for that very reason. So please stop judging and give some credit to those who are not putting a needle in their arm anymore. You don't know how hard that is to do!!!

hi need help in ohio'...the best advice i can give you- is to try to find someone who you can buy a few from..enough to get by on without getting sick. 99% of the time- the doctor or clinic you go to will think you are lying. I wish it was not this way- but unfortunately it is. I am a pain management patient and have seen people get kicked out who were holding a POLICE REPORT in their hand! Its not fair. I think if you have proof then you should be able to get a refill. But the doctor one day was angry about all of the incidents of people trying to get refills on meds because of housefires...break-ins...family member stealing them...she explained to me that a police report doesnt prove much- because the patient couldve just called out the police and told them they had been robbed just for the purpose of having a police report in their hands for an early refill. So people like us who have to take these strong meds..if they are stolen we just end up being screwed. I even met someone whose house had burned down- and they brought proof of that- and the poor guy not only lost everything he owned in a fire- but got kicked out of pain management! I dont know who they think would burn down their house just to get an early re-fill on their rx! Just please try to be strong and maybe you can get something to hold you over. I know that is alot easier said than done. But i pray that you will be able to make it through- and please dont give up- i know it is an every day struggle. But if you can somehow make it- invest in a small lock safe for your next prescription- and never keep it in bathroom..teenagers know to look there for a high. Good luck with your struggles- believe me- ive been there too.

I had a so call friend to tell me she stole a few of my suboxone from my bathroom. and they only reason she told me was she got stopped with them and they wanted to charge her with them and she said they didn't but asked her to work for them, she said she declined. I am very upset cause I don't want them to think I sold them to her or gave them to her. I can not afford to get into any more trouble. and I was wondering what do I need to do? she will never be friends with me again and she is not allowed in my home again, troubled in NC

That's your opinion,I have been on suboxone for 6 years.i will never get off of it I have followed through counseling, psychiatrist, meetings, and me and sub Dr feel it would be in my best interest to stay on it,and it is different than being addicted to oxycodone,or any other opiate.im not out Dr shopping to find more, not spending all money on numerous prescriptions,or finding them off the street.plus I'm not stealing,my family trust me again life is normal, and as far as getting high ,no u are wrong,it does just enough to satisfy my needs,so after all that I have done to get my drugs,I will gladly stay on it,not because of high, but because of becoming normal again, being accepted by family and friends who I lied and stole from.so yea I plan on staying on it.i finally have life back.so I really disagree with you.and pretty sure some would agree..

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy in Jan 2013, and though I was scared to take it, Adderall brought me to life. I stopped sleeping away every weekend, nodding off at my desk, and was no longer a hazard on the road! Then in May 2013 my prescription for Adderall was stolen from my purse at work; not the whole bottle, but over 2 weeks worth. Like other controlled substances such as opiates pain relievers, suboxin, methadone and benzos, there is a high value and demand for adderall. As I commend several others, I too went the honest route. My doctor and insurance company required a copy of the police report to issue an early refill. Here's where the honest and moral course of action becomes the most stupid thing I have ever done. When I contacted the local police I was told that they do not typically file reports for stolen medications, because then everyone would do that! However, because I explained that I could not safely drive, and I couldn't afford to miss 2 weeks work without pay, the officer made a "special" arrangement. I would have to consent to a polygraph, and if anything came back that I was not honest, I would face charges. Since I did nothing wrong, and was telling the truth, I agreed (idiot!) After a humiliating and degrading interrogation, turning myself in, and now a pending trial for a misdemeanor "filing false incident report", I've been graying rapidly and in a perpetual anxiety attack.

So, everyone, please invest in a heavy duty fire safe, the kind you can bolt into the floor with both a key and a combination. Carry only your daily dose in the original bottle. Don't let anyone aside from medical staff & family/friend whom acts as a medical decision maker know you take these meds. I hold no judgement to those who do have a true medical need for opiate pain killers, only to take care and maintain open communication with your doctor. And my best friend is on methadone, and she is making very slow decreases. The reality is that she may not ever completely come off. All that matters is she sticks with it! Best of luck to everyone!!!

Not to be mean TT but 3 months in a row sounds ridiculous. Whether it was your daughter or boyfriend you should've locked them up or something especially after the first time. All pain contracts clearly states your are responsible for your medication and to get a lock box. The person who claims the pharmacy shorted you 60 pills is absurd. Counting your pills in the pharmacy only makes you look like a drug seeker. On my first PM appt I did a questionnaire that asks do you find yourself counting your pills. If you say yes then they will say they can't help you because that's addictive behavior. Ijs

LOL I count my pills every time I take one; before and after. I also count them during commercials, before and after meals or a shower, before I go to bed and after I get dressed in the morning AND upon returning after I've gone out. Did I forget to mention that I suffer from a bit of OCD? LOL

Suboxone does not make you feel high, its like a nicotine patch and if you could come sit in on one of our weekly groups where we discuss how much the suboxone had helped us that it brings us all to tears, well then maybe you'd shut up. You clearly do not understand.

I so sick of pain docs scared of their shadow now and cutting our meds--I went from 120mg oxy plus fentanyl to now just 40mg oxy! They're trying to kill us! I'm thinking bout going on suboxone..as long as it gives energy, which suboxone has in the past...Ill be okay...

I have had this happen to my oxycotin! I just refilled my script and my daughter came to visit me, I never thought a thing about it. Well, when it was time for my next dose, I released that she had taken the whole bottle. My OWN daughter! So the next day I went to my doctor and told him what had happened and he said he would refill but ONLY that time! Never again, (he had been my doctor for years also) but I had no way to pay for the script so my landlord paid for it and I paid him back a little at a time. Thank goodness. So, yes, file a police report and stay strong but honest. I hope this helps some!
