I have been on Multaq 400mg twice a day for 5 years. For me is a miracle drug. I tried everything nothing worked. At 7am I take coumadin 1mg., my multivitameni b and 20billion of probiotic(for my stomach). At 1:30PM I take multaq 400mg plus koreg.325mg and at 1:30AM I take again Multaq 400mg. The secret you have to take it every day the same time and as far away from the coumadin because both of them strongly interact with each other. I am 82 years old and I fill very good. No side efects.

Gary: You are so right that we must research all our medications and advocate for ourselves. For four years, I was having pain in my hips. The doctors (all 5 that I have seen) kept telling me it was arthritis. It was a constant pain and never went away and it was getting so bad that I had trouble walking. Then I started getting night sweats. The final straw was that I couldn't eat. (that was partially good because I need to lose 60 pounds & I lost 30). Finally, I researched the side effects of one of my drugs--hydralazline--and these were all symptoms of a reaction to it. I have quit taking it (with the knowledge of the "doctors") and my pain is mostly gone. The night sweats are gone. Food tastes good again (that is too bad lol).

Just thought I would share since you are all discussing advocating for yourselves with the docs

It's great to see some positive stories here!

Trapper, it's really great to hear at least the Afib is being controlled, I hope the the other problems eventually work themselves out.

Hey Debbie, I've heard heavier woman are much more caring and loving, not to mention being quite sexy. :)

I'm so glad to hear "you" found the problem and corrected it. Self reliance and common sense seems to be lacking in today's world.

Hello all just a FYI my cardiologist took me off Multaq said the MFG of the drug does not even back it anymore. I'm so glad I work full time and the constant diarrhea was a issue if you know what I mean. Anyway I posted a long time back Debbie from Cincinnati. My doc says his plan is to get me off the Pradaxa also and placed on a baby aspirin. He was one of the docs that's was on the research team for coreq which I will stay on probably forever but that is fine by me.....Good luck to everyone I read all the post and hardly get a chance to post....God bless

Gary: Thanks for the comment. But the doctors keep saying if I lose weight my arthritis in my knees will be better. So I want to lose weight to see if they're right. So far, it hasn't helped.

Debbie, I agree. I lost a kept off over 40 pounds last year (took me about a month to do it) and I feel much more energetic and the ache I had in my left hip doesn't bother me at all now. I might take off another 10 pounds or so but it's not really necessary so we'll see.

I have been taking Multaq for about 6 weeks and I totally despise the drug. The side effects are terrible ~ total loss of appetitte, depression, intestinal disturbances, and the list goes on and on.

Carol, It sounds like you're one of those people whose system cannot adapt to Multaq or it's conflicting with another drug or herb you may be taking (if you're taking anything else of course). Consult with your physician and see what he/she says because loss of appetite and feeling depressed are not listed as or are known side effects of Multaq, sounds like there's something else going on here. Best to check with your Doc.

Have taken Multaq for 1 year. No side effects except for weight gain. Not sure if it is from the drug or if I am slowing down. I had panic attacks for years before my afib episodes. They seemed to clear up on their own.. Good luck with the multaq, hope it helps your situation..

Wilson, I am 74 & have taken multaq for almost a year. I didn't have AF until I took Synthroid but it came for a few hrs the first time and incfreased to 3 days the last time before Multaq. I took 2 tabs a day for a while and it seemed to hurt my internal organs. I started to take 2-3 1/2 tablets per day and increase to 4 1/2 tabs anytime I had a problem with AF. I already took clonezapam for panic attacks but in a very small dose. I average 3 1/2 tabs a day. I haven't gained weight because i bike and because the Synthroid keeps my metabolism up. Multaq is an improvement over the original medication which had side affects too bad to tolerate. It is not a perfect solution.

Thanks for your reply, But I wonder if Panic Attack is a side effect of Multaq?

I have been using Multaq for two years. It has been a blessing for me. I am 64 with A-Fib, high blood pressure, have a heart murmur from having Rheumatic fever as a child. We have finally got BP under control. The Multaq has helped with the horses racing or the flip flop in my chest. The only way I know I am having an episode now is that I get short of breath really fast. I check to see if pulse or bp is rising. I had an episode last night that lasted almost 12 hours. Then I converted back. If you miss your Multaq dosage, I take morning and evening. Today I do not know if I took it or not. So will I have to wait for my evening dosage or can I take it a little sooner. I usually dose 8 am and 8 pm. thanks

I am so sorry that the Multaq is not working for you. I guess it effects every one differently. It definitely has not suppressed my appetite.I do eat my meals first and wait thirty minutes to an hour before taking it. One morning I skipped breakfast and took it. My stomach started cramping and burning and I got nauseous. I never skipped a meal after that episode.Hope you feel better.

Elly,

There are a lot of different Beta Blockers for numerous purposes. You "must" always research on your own what any doctor tells you about meds before taking them. Many doctors just don't do their homework on meds, it's your responsibility since it's your body, not theirs. My Afib was caused by a doctor 2 years ago, he gave me an injection (while I was under right before an MRI, my heart went nuts as soon as I was injected) that was "not" supposed to be given to me because of another med I was on for something else. He had my meds history but never bothered to check for possible interactions with the two meds, he just gave me the same thing he normally gave to every other patient. When I looked up what he gave me it plainly said it should NOT be given to anyone taking what I was taking, it would cause rapid heartbeat and/or Afib. Thanks doc. I didn't sue him but I'm still contemplating it. Others here and myself on here have said countless times, you must do your own research on everything, trust no one!

"Atenolol" is used for a number of conditions including: hypertension (mainly), angina, acute myocardial infarction, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

*feeling light-headed, fainting;
*feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;
*swelling of your ankles or feet;
*nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
*depression, nightmares; or
*cold feeling in your hands and feet.

More serious side effects include:

*hallucinations
*low blood pressure (hypotension)
*skin reactions, e.g. rash, hives, flaking of skin, worsening of psoriasis
*sensation of 'pins and needles' hands or feet
*irritated eyes, visual disturbances
*difficulty hearing
*difficulty speaking
*unsteadiness when walking

Less serious side effects may include:

*decreased libido, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;
sleep problems (insomnia);
*tired feeling; or
*anxiety, nervousness.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
=========================================

Wilson,

There is no clinical evidence or reported incidents of Multaq causing panic attacks. I'm extremely familiar with panic attacks (when I had clinical depression many years ago) and taking Multaq has not caused anything, not even a hint of anxiety.
==============================

Note: You must eat a meal (or at least some food) before taking Multaq. Multaq runs through your system very quickly and will not work if taken on an empty stomach.

Sally I take 100 mg of metoprolol morning and evening and the Multaq twice a day. You are right, Multaq was a blessing for me. Before I was on the Multaq, I was having A fib every weekend with elevated BP and would have to go to ER for conversion. I hated that feeling of your heart beating out of your chest. Now the only way I know I am having a episode is that I get short of breath without any physical exertion. I check on my BP machine and it shows I am in A Fib. When I have these episodes, I found out that I would get very anxious or agitated. My family dr. Prescribed Lorazepam. I will take one when having A fib episode and lie down for a while listening to meditation tapes on my iPod. It really does help.

Does your dr. want to eventually take you off the multaq? I have had four ablations and my doctor wants to take me off of the multaq and I'm afraid I will go back into afib/flutter when I do. Has anyone had ablations with multaq then be weaned off of the multaq?

Gary you are so right about taking Multaq with food in your stomach. I found out the hard way by skipping breakfast one morning. My gut started hurting and had a burning sensation . This lasted for several hours. So I never skip a meal now.
