Metoprolol And Atenolol

Are these two medications the same? - metoprolol succinate er 25 mg and atenolol 50 mg. I need help please.

my pcp dr wrote this out Atenolol 50mg but my heart dr has me on Metoprolol succ er 25mg now my Question is are these the same medications

They are not the same, but they are in the same class of medications. I am not a doctor, but if were me, I'd take the one recommended by the cardiologist, simply because they have a lot more training and experience in such matters. I can't tell you what to do, but if you aren't sure, you should consult your cardiologist.

The FDA lists their typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.

A cardiologist prescribed metoproplol as one of my meds after I was hospitalized with severe angina. I dont know if it was a post heart attack symptom or the atenolol, but It seemed to cause serious stomach problems, so he changed my Rx to atenolol and the problem went away.
