I believe what you are referring to is Metformin, the generic version of the diabetes drug Glucophage, here's the monograph info with side effects:

My husband (55 years old) just started using Metformine this past week due to a glucose of 134 (A1 of 7.4) and within a couple of days, what he thinks is a re-occurance of gout has kicked in. Started in his heal and now in his ankle. He has not had a gout attack this painful in many years. Can there be any chance that this medication could have initiated this?
