Is Diclofenac A Muscle Relaxer
UpdatedThe lower sphincter of my oesophagus won't relax to let food pass (achalasia?). My doctor prescribed nitrate (isordil), which works sometime but it gives me such a headache that i gave up on it. Is there a reliable muscle relaxant that i could try? Reading up about diclofenac puts me off: the risks are not trivial, especially at my age (82), though it has helped me for other complaints.
Thanks.

No, Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that is most commonly used to treat pain, fever, and swelling. The NIH lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, easy bruising, and increased risk of bleeding.
There are many reliable muscle relaxants that you could try, but it really depends on your overall health, any other medications you may be taking, and whether or not your doctor thinks they are safe for you.
Have you tried taking it, yet?
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I have taken diclof-Na for 2 days now, a 50 mg pill 30 to 60 minutes before meal. Significant relief after the second pill, unsure about the first one. I will continue for another day then stop, to see if the effect lasts.
Re: Rupert (# 2)
I stopped diclof after 3 days. It had no carryover effect. Tried buscopan, no effect at all. Dr put me on sublingual spray of nitroglycerin, which worked for about 15 mins if i applied maximum dose. Somehow overdosed myself a week ago, pretty sick for couple of hours but then could swallow freely for the rest of the day! But next day the sphincter was blocked again and has remained so. Also, oesoph peristalsis and mucus secretion stopped. I can now take in only water, fruit juice, milk, cold drinks -- only solutions, no suspensions like soup or purees.
I have to drink ALL the time, either sipping or quaffing, to avoid dehydration, Fast intake leads to almost immediate regurgitation, wasteful, but enough is taken up by diffusion in the oral cavity (perhaps also the oesoph) to meet my needs, as when sipping. I have lost >20% weight and clearly cannot last more than some weeks unless peristalsis starts up again.
