is anyone being prescribed scopolamine off-label for depression? the NIMH is doing clinical trials for same and apparently it works, however my p-doc won't prescribe it for me.
Re: Charles (# 22)
You can buy Scopolomine over the internet, I believe on Amazon. It's sold for an upset stomach.
Is Scopolamine FDA approved? Do any pharmacies carry it? If so, how much does it cost? Thank you.
Re: Sharkie (# 169)
I have been dealing with depression since my twenties I am 58 have tried just about everything to no avail I just can't stand it anymore I want to try an live what little time I have left. Please can you tell me what I can tell my doc, so he as well as I, can understand the concept good bless
Katamine "helps" everyone. It is now considered a "street drug". Ketamine is not the protocol they are talking about here to treat Depression, especially to "Treatment Resistant Depression" lasting for years, not responding to standard treatment
What IS being evaluated is the metabolic "Hydronorketamine". Ask your Dr if this will help you with your particular diagnosis.
Hello, my name is Nick. Thanks for your post. I know this is over a year, and it'd be hard to believe you'd respond to my question, but, just in case, I'll ask. I have been through countless remedies, medication combinations, ketamine infusions, deep tms, stellate ganglion block, ECT, and much, much more with no results. Years have gone by where I am debilitated by this every moment of everyday in each sense of the word. I am just finishing my final (36th) session on deep tms and my 4th day with the scopolamine patch. I am constantly suffering, but I guess I am currently suffering a tiny bit less the past hour which gave me the ability to type this. Anyway, I was wondering how you were doing and how you did with the ketamine and/or scopolamine patch. Also, any other thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.
That last post from me was for MJR post 155 to answer.
Thanks
Can you tell me how the scopolamine worked for you while trying to taper the Valium? I am in the same spot. Tapering valium with some growing seasonal depression and anxiety. My doctor is suggesting the protocol you did. Did you have any interactions
with the two drugs?
SAD is not always (solely) caused by a lack of sunlight. There are other seasonal factors (such as reduced ability to exercise) which can exacerbate mood. You cannot expect a SAD lamp to bring back the comprehensive environmental enrichment of a good summer. They work for some but not all.
So maybe don't remove it? I remember other patches causing similar marks and irritations. So what I'm saying is it could be more of an irritation of the dermis and not a reaction to medication. Could wait for skin oils or baths to wear down adhesives. Should not be a problem as meds in patch are already gone due to absorbtion. All I'm saying is you may not have to give up patches; certainly sounds like it would be worth looking into. Good luck!
Ketamine helps me. Unfortunately, I personally didn't respond well at all when we added oral scopolamine. However, I do know that it's being tested and found helpful by some others.
Are you saying that the addition of scopolamine to your ketamine treatment helped your depression significantly?
I had a similar experience. I was dealing with treatment resistant depression and had quit all my meds bc of the side effects. I had a bout of vertigo that caused me to pass out several times. I was prescribed Transderm Scop (the scopolamine transdermal patch used for motion sickness) after having the patch on for about 8 hours or so I realized I was feeling better as far as my depression. By the next day I felt great. I googled it and found out about the NIMH study and I was so excited! I talked to my GP and he said "if it works for you, lets do it." Ive been using the patches for about 2 months. I feel like I need a higher dosage now though so im doing research online for clinics near me that may be able to help. If this works for your daughter, keep pushing! My only side effects have been slight blurry vision and dry mouth. Waaaaaay better than the constant catatonic state from the drugs ive tried before.
Yes, just started scopolamine as an adjunct to ongoing intranasal ketamine (life-long treatment-resistant major depression). I'm being treated by the MGH DCRP, absolutely amazing program. Feel free to post me any questions.
How did the inhaled ketamine compare to the IV transfusion? Did it work as well? I have an appointment with the doctor you mentioned, but I'm wondering if I should cancel and go for the transfusion instead. Thanks in advance.
confused why you were prescribed ANY medication for SAD which is caused and fixed by light, exspecially why you were prescribed something as strong as valium. Your "cutting edge'' doctors put you on medications that cause addiction for something that can be simply fixed through a special light lamp, or going outside, or melatonin related therapy
You will be a guinea pig for the scopolamine, but I hope you consider the actual cause of your depression if you strongly suspect it's S.A.D., you are lucky to maybe fix it through natural means, not appease to Big Pharma. I hope you find what works, nutrition, exercise, and light imbalance should always be considered by doctors.
I've had the same experience. I think instead of the nicotine it is something else in the tobacco. Maybe MOAI in the tobacco plant. It cold be a chemical in the mgf of cigs. It could also be a reaction to satisfying the addiction to something in cigs as well as nicotine. Also gum is released slowly and cigs give you a quick hit.
Emily's Mom, look at Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation (JBRF) website.... Offers new perspective on bipolar-like behavior/mood symptoms. Look for their description symptoms for the "fear of harm" phenotype....it may match what your daughter is experiencing? They also report children with this particular group of symptoms tend to be resistant to treatments used for depression/ anxiety/ bipolar, etc. The research group is conducting clinical trials on intranasal ketamine.
Maybe there is hope???
My then 15 year old daughter has suffered from low moods since preschool. She has battled severe depression and anxiety all her life. She cried every day at preschool and elementary school, biting her arm so hard she'd draw blood. She hasn't been able to complete a full year of school since 5th grade and has been on hospital home bound schooling since. She attempted suicide twice, and was sent to a pediatric mental hospital for 6 months. She has been prescribed literally dozens of psychiatric medicines to no avail...antidepressants, antipsychotics, bipolar meds, etc. etc. She had surgery for sinusitis and adenoid removal and was given a scopolamine patch for anti-nausea for recovery. For that week with the patch, she was "normal" as in calm and content. wish there was a way to keep her in this state, but I don't think she could function with the patch 24/7 and I don't know of any psychiatrist who would prescribe it for her. She's 17 now. Maybe when she turns 18 we'll have better luck.
Anticholinergic meds were popular when tricyclic were in vogue. They are similar to truth serum Rx's in some ways. Tricyclic Rx's have a unacceptable mortality and morbidity.
I wish you luck. I tried Scopolamine oral (went up to 2mg) and sad to say, it did basically nothing for me. The patches did help, but I am allergic to the adhesive in the patch, which was so disappointing :( I would get a major itchy red circle when I removed it that would take forever to go away. Wasn't worth it :(
