I’ve been on Eliquis since 20th April 2018. Due to May Thurner Syndrome,I had a stent put into my common iliac artery. After starting Eliquis I did feel a lot better but the weight crept on and on. I train at the gym with a personal trainer 6 days a week, prep my meals, practically eat as little as a baby. No sugar ,hardly any carbs and no salt. I’m also taking lasix 40mg once a day. Yet the specialist said nothing about weight gain and a swollen belly. I weigh 12kg heavier than what I did before my surgery and it’s very hard to feel better when this medication crushes your bodies structure. Also I have random bleeding when I go to the toilet.I think it should be removed from pharmaceutical. companies. My dr believes that in 3 weeks when I swap to aspirin tablets my weight will come off but I feel like a balloon. I’m being too hard on myself, but I can’t help it as it’s not normal to gain weight or fluid this rapid...I should just enjoy life, be a little bit more lazy and eat McDonald’s. Then I have an excuse for the weight gain. I’m lucky to be healthier than I was before my surgery and I wouldn’t take it for granted. But I can only see reviews from people that have used Eliquis and no dr is doing anything about it. Please let me know if you are off it now and have lost the weight and fluid retention
Re: Rainbow Trout (# 6)
I am so saddened by so many people’s stories of suffering with these heart / blood medicines.
Wanted to share the existence of Life Extensions document about Blood Clotting, and also the protocol for Homocysteine reduction (eg Patrick Holford) which also decreases blood clot risk. Likewise Houstons papers on nutraceuticals for hypertension.
Alas once on drugs, it can be really difficult to change. Be aware that drugs often have rebound reactions and even when a doc says it's ok to stop, consider tapering drug down really slowly. Standard advice to check everything with a doctor applies.
Check out how your drugs interact and (likely) work against each other. Drugs often have six week trials before they are marketed. Doctors prescribe them for far more than six weeks. People need this health info before they get really sick, and before they are prescribed drugs - is my view.
Re: Patrick (# 4)
I'm with you on this. I too am sensitive to meds. I have always been active. However I was taking that horrible drug Prednisone. Down to 2 pills! Not on Eliquis at the time. A huge Pulmonary Embolism formed in my lungs almost died! I believe there is a correlation between that steroid and blood clots. Dr. says the rest of my life for blood thinners. I believe in holistic methods, like tumeric, and garlic, and baby asprin!!!! Good luck to you.
Re: Patrick (# 4)
I just started Eliquis for one month. Weight gain and fluid retention immediately. My abdomen is swollen, calves are swollen it’s awful. I’m married to a doctor and he is so ignorant about the Eliquis causing these side effects. I’m going to stop taking the Eliquis right away and figure something else out. There has to be another way.
Re: Lee (# 2)
I had similar symptom to you small calf blood clot. I have tried Xarelto, bloated, weight gain. Doctor put me on another tablet no different, thinking of taking the chance and leaving well alone. Feel knackered most of the time, aching limbs. I don't think anyone has a clue on drugs for blood clots.
I also am having a lot of problems with it and I've gained 45 pounds in one year it isn't very good medicine I don't believe I used to take Plavix after having a stent put in they took me off Plavix and put me on this Eliquis and ever since then I've had one trouble after another high price doesn't work don't trust it all right forgive me I may sound like I'm rambling I've gone through a whole year of this don't know what to suggest to you if Coumadin work in in the days past I would suggest going back not only so it's it's inexpensive
I have been taking Eliquis --- 1 year (was taking Plavix)..... Although Plavix left me prey to outbursts of Afib, Chf.....
I gained 45 lbs in 1year .....breathing trouble much worse....unable to sleep at night, (must use hospital urinal beside bed)
Wake up dehydrated. Having multiple other symptoms:
1) (heart tightness)
2) Tooth Rot
3) blood in urine
4) cramps in legs and chest
5) shortness of breath --- always gasping for air
6) INABILITY TO LOSE WEIGHT(Gain More)
7) Anxiety--- loss of focus(confusion)
Most of these LIFE SAVING Medicines seem to be killing me the longer I use them.....
I'M GOING TO PRAY AND ASK GOD WHAT TO DO ABOUT ALL THESE HEART MEDS ---- THAT HURT ME MORE THAN HELP ME---- I GUARANTEE WITH HIS HELP ---- THIS WILL TURN AROUND
I’ve been on Eliquis for about month now for PE, caused from a birth control pill called Gianvi. Was told I’m lucky to be alive. I was put on warfarin at first, not having insurance I only paid $8 for it. It caused severe migraines, insomnia, loss of appetite, dehydration was severe, I could go on. I felt worse taking warfarin than having the large clot in my lung. I told my doctor I will not take it another night after being at the er that day. I was changed to Eliquis which is very expensive ($210 for a week of medication they said). I only got about four to try them out, not paying out of pocket for that amount of money and can’t use it. Found out no more migraines and I can eat n more importantly I can sleep! After a few weeks of not sleeping I was losing it. I don’t take any medication bc I’m very sensitive. The only thing I was taking was the Gianvi for a cyst as my husband is fixed. I don’t smoke or have any family history of blood clots. I still have pains in my chest due to clots I assume and my legs get pains if I’m not moving. Honestly I can’t wait for my six months to be over with.
I've been on Xerelto, for about a month. I've got swollen legs and feet, have occasional headaches, very distended stomach and weight gain. I'm tired all the time. As I've read many posts from others experiencing this, I was considering Eliquis. Now, I read it sounds like it may cause the same issues. I'm beginning to think the small calf clot wasn't worth it.
Hello, Moe! How is your dad doing?
Yes, the Eliquis could be the cause and his doctor should be informed, there are other medications he can try, as well as switching back to the Coumadin.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of Coumadin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising.
Is he on a diuretic?
