Blue Fluoxetine Causes Heartburn (Page 12) (Top voted first)
UpdatedRecently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?
Jen, I know exactly how you feel. I stopped taking them completely because of the pain. I'm glad you reported it. I will do the same. Thank you for the response. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one with the hell heartburn.
I just took a Prozac and it felt like it was stuck in my chest and game me terrible
Heartburn which I had Never had before. I think I didn't,drink enough water eith it.
I've experienced the heartburn while taking the 40mg white/blue capsules with the 872/PAR imprint. However, it has happened only twice in the past few months since I started. The first time it happened it got so bad that I vomited. I noticed that there was a blue coloring in some of the vomit, the same as the blue on the capsule. I didn't eat or drink anything that I know of that was that color, but I had been to the dentist and wasn't sure what color their toothpaste stuff was. At the time I didn't look into the capsule aspect of it and it didn't happen again until just now. This time, same thing as the first time: I took the capsules and the heartburn was there within several minutes. A little bit later I was feeling worse and ended up vomiting again. There indeed was some blue coloring, but not as much as before, and the heartburn was still there. I ended up vomiting a few more times, each time with more blue coloring. At the moment the heartburn is considerably less painful- it pretty much let up each time I vomited whatever was that blue stuff. It's still there but I don't feel so bad now.
I'm just now at a complete loss as to why it's happened only these two times. There were no breaks in between the previous doses for these two incidents, while there had been breaks before with no problem. The one thing I'm certain about is that it's the capsule itself causing the problem for me.
I have been taking the Green and white capsules for 8 years.Only recently I have started getting heart so bad that I have vomited.Slight headaches too.Not nice.
This is such a relief!! My pharmacy gave me my last Rx in two different bottles because they filled it partially with my usual brand and partially with the Teva (blue and orange pill). The last three nights I've taken the Teva brand and have experienced the severe burning, with each night getting worse and worse. It felt like it was going to burn through from my chest to my back. My husband almost took me to the ER, but after sipping on some ginger ale, it subsided. Today, however, I feel like crapola. My chest and back still ache a little bit. I just got off the phone with my pharmacist (who is awesome) and she said that she had never heard of this happening, and that the reason they had the Teva in stock is because one of their other customer's prefers it. She is allowing me to bring back the remaining Teva capsules to exchange for the generic brand I usually get. Tonight I'm going to take the normal one and see how it does. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and allowing me to share also.
I have always had the blue until recently. I found that washing it down with a carbonated beverage such as coke, mt dew or whatever, solved the problem of heartburn/feeling like its stuck halfway down. I found this out just by trial and error noticing that sometimes I had the problems and other times not. The variable turned out to be water or carbonated beverage. Hope this helps.
On a side note the pills I was issued this time are teal and orange and say E92.. Depression has worsened severely. Anyone have similar problems?
No, this isn't something that can be sued for. The drug is in the open market with numerous companies making generic forms of the drug. There was no health damage caused to anybody (for example nobody died, nobody experienced severe, permanent, or life-threatening injuries). The issue isn't with the drug, it's with the gelatin capsule used by the various companies distributing the drug. In order to sue there would have to be evidence of gross negligence, and that isn't the case here. Heartburn isn't actionable. It would be considered frivilous. In situations like this it would be pointed out that a person needs to accept personal responsibility for the drugs taken. For optional drugs like fluoxetine if we experience problems we tell our doctor who then discontinues it or prescribes something else, or we simply stop taking the drug. To give you an example, one of the most common side effects from Tylenol is, believe it or not, headache. When people take Tylenol for a headache the last thing they would assume is that the Tylenol could make it worse, but that's not actionable, and when someone managed to find a lawyer inexperienced enough to sue the individual was chastised by the court for bringing a frivolous suit because they could have just as easily stopped talking it. Personal responsibility trumps minor side effects no matter how uncomfortable they were to a person because generic fluoxetine isn't a necessary drug, it's one of many equally viable options of drug therapy.
The issue of dyes is frustrating to explain because by themselves they cannot cause heartburn, but some dyes can create allergic reactions in a very small number of people which can sometimes create inflammation in the lower esophagus which can facilitate acid reflux (the cause of heartburn). But in that case it would mean that you have an allergy to the dye itself and would experience the same symptoms from other things containing the same dye (for example blue M&Ms, blue Jello, blue marshmallow peeps, etc...). The blue dye you are referring to is often mixed with a gelatin coating. It is the gelatin that facilitates acid reflux resulting in heartburn. If you suspect an allergy to a dye you should talk to your doctor so that he can prescribe an epipen for you to keep on hand.
Sorry you are having the heartburn problem....when I take the the green and white pills, I just have normal heartburn. (The flavored chews are WONDERFUL for getting rid of heartburn.) But when I took the blue ones, the heartburn started almost immediately. The flavored antacid chews can be found at Walgreens or CVS drug stores.
you're right, Tim. The pain is terrible. Something needs to be changed. And FAST!!
I am taking Fluoxetine Capsules. Two 40 mg pills each morning. They are: mint green and orange plastic capsules with E92 printed on the capsules. Manufactured for Aurobindo Pharma USA by Aurobindo Pharma Limited/ India
I also take, two 150 mg of bupropion. Round purple pill E415 etched on one side (wellbutrin)
I still remembered that night when my heart was burning like hell but as soon as I took the Fluoxetine capsules I got the quick relief, its really great I think the people feeling problems with heart burn must take Fluoxetine capsules.
Lindsay, The medicine was working. But not the way it was supposed to. I was put on Prozac for anxiety. Which was stupid to begin with. After a month or so I had no emotions and my mind was so cloudy I couldn't remember anything. I'm the type of person that can remember things from 10 years ago and not forget a single detail about it. I had started passing out cold from the anxiety and my doctor put me on Prozac, which was a ridiculous thing to do. For ME in general. Not saying its ridiculous for anyone else. After having the hellacious heart burn every night I stopped completely. I couldn't take it anymore. I had no with drawl symptoms. I finally started feeling like myself again. I still live with the anxiety. A doctor shouldn't retreat to putting someone on a pill for every thing that is wrong. You either have a good life or a hard life. A pill is not going to fix that. Just saying. I know so many people that get put on depression medicine because they have it "hard". That's life. I myself am not going to be put on something that's just going to numb the hardness in my life. Yeah, my anxiety is awful. But id rather live with it than live with no emotions at all. I'm just speaking for myself here. No one else. I am not talking bad about anyone that has to be put on depression for real problems because depression is an awful thing to deal with. I'm just saying that there are SO many people who abuse the fact that they have it "hard" and want to be put on meds. I didn't need to be put on Prozac. it was a waste of my time. My doctor also tried to put me on viibryd an I wouldn't take it.. Good luck to everyone that has the hellacious heartburn. its awful and I hope you find some relief. And I am sorry for the rant.
why would you put up with years of pain and toucher? Your body is speaking to you
If this stuff is so toxic that it causes severe pain, I think it should be banned. It's not worth taking if it's causing painful side effects
