Blue Fluoxetine Causes Heartburn (Page 11) (Top voted first)

Recently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?

I have a similar experience. I take a 60mg tablet. I forgot to eat with my meds 2 days ago and my throat is still burning today. Really bad heartburn. I talked with a pharmacist and he suggested Zantac. I got some yesterday but didn’t notice much of a difference. Tums helped. Every time I eat anything it burns all the way down. This doesn’t happen to me very often. Back when I took a lower dose I took a gelatin capsule instead of a tablet. There were a couple times where I threw it into my mouth just before leaving for work and it would get stuck in my throat then when it melted it would explode and the powder would burn my throat really bad. The second time it happened It made me sneeze and went up into my nose. Holy cow, talk about pain! I never let that happen again.

Is it a different manufacturer they just started using? I have also NEVER had this before my most recent refill at Walgreens. I don’t know what to do, I can’t keep taking it if it’s going to be this bad!

Kaitlin, I'm beginning to think we should speak up. The pharamacists's hands are tied; they're just cogs in the corporate wheel who can't help. There's no point in them shopping for the cheapest price if the drugs are crappy, fifth-world manufactured. Does your prescription also say Alembic is the manufacturer?

Help!!! I’m grateful I found this forum. Started taking Prozac about six days ago. Everything was fine until tonight. I usually take it before bed with water. Tonight the heartburn is so bad it caused me to vomit. I also suffer from acid reflux and take Prilosec but it can’t touch this heartburn! It’s the worst I’ve ever had. I also get my prescriptions from Walgreens so now I’m a little worried. I tried the baking soda and water mixture, but it didn’t help at all! Any advice is extremely appreciated!!! I’m calling my doctor in the morning. Not going to be able to sleep at all tonight.

Yes, I had Alembic as the manufacturer! They apparently think it is okay to coat their pills in poison. I told my Walgreens pharmacy about how those blue pills gave me such bad heartburn I was vomiting, and was given a different manufacturer- Aurobindo. It seems to be okay so far! Ask for it! Maybe if enough people speak up they will stop giving out the horrible Alembic ones.

Yes, it was Walgreens that gave me the bad fluoxetine. That was the last straw for me with them - I moved all of my prescriptions to Walmart.

Eric--

You keep claiming it's the gelatin in the capsule. How do you know this? And why would it only be a problem with SOME capsules and not others? I used to take this medicine regularly with absolutely no problems.

Yes got a 90 day supply of blue Prozac and they give me heartburn. This is new prior to the blue pills I had no heartburn with Prozac. Going to call pharmacy and see if they can switch out my Prozac.

what does it mean by the blue prozac? I take these white pill ones that come in 20mg that you can cut in half and for some reason tonight i have the WORST stomach burn and it won't go away. I have no idea if it's because of the pill itself, or since i recently increased my dose. I don't know what to do!

I am so glad to see that it’s the generic Alembic made Prozac that’s causing such severe heartburn like symptoms. I couldn’t figure it out. Never had a problem with Prozac- typically the white with small green stripe- I know for sure it’s that blue pill. I know not everyone responds the same way but these seem like poison

I've been taking the blue capsules 40 mg generic alembic fluoxetine for about a month and have been throwing up after taking them and feel like I'm having a heart attack. When I took the white pill with orange and green stripes I never had this problem at all and I took them for 4 years . I hope this helps someone else it took me a while to figure it out.

So thankful to read this. My mail order pharmacy sent me the blue ones from Alembic and I get severe heartburn. I'm going back to Kroger, which uses Aurobindo. Thank you again.

When I first started taking Prozac it was white with a green strip I believe and was completely fine, After about 6 months they switched to this dreaded "Blue" pill and omg the heartburn is excruciatingly painful I can't breathe let alone think properly because of the pain...I stopped taking them for awhile because of the pain I changed my diet, became more active then started taking them again today and nothing I'm at Wal-Mart right now in severe pain...This is not okay!!

I continue to get acid reflux/heartburn from my generic prozac and it’s to the point where I am going to stop taking them out of fear. The pain is so so bad!! I might switch to a whole different medication now.

Yes. Horrible esophagus burn and heart burn. So excruciating. I dread every day taking this prozac.

The only way I have been able to get these pills down is to take them out of the blue capsule. It's very unpleasant taste but at least your stomach doesn't feel like the fiery pits of a volcano.

Rose, my doctor told me that Prozac is a non habit forming pill so you can just stop taking them. I stopped taking mine about two weeks ago because I couldn't handle the pain anymore. It made me feel like I was having a heart attack my chest would hurt so bad. Its not worth the pain. to me anyways. Hope this helped. best of luck.

Megan, did you just quit cold turkey? I've been on a lot of different depression meds and that brain zap sick feeling is horrible! I started weening myself the other night, taking just one 40mg instead of the 2. Was going to alternate, but if I can just quit than hooray!
