Blue Fluoxetine Causes Heartburn (Page 7) (Top voted first)

Updated

Recently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?

I’ve been taking fluoxetine for 12 years with no problems or side effects at all. After switching from Sanoff brand to these blue fluoxetines a month ago, I’m having terrible problems - severe headaches, nausea, pain in my joints, night sweats, day sweats, insomnia, crying spells, and extreme anxiety. Switching back to Teva brand today and calling the FDA.

Re: Tammy Jo (# 214) Expand Referenced Message

Tammy Jo, was it a big chain pharmacy that gave you this prescription? The blue Alembic I had came from Walgreens. I went to Rite-Aid today with a new paper prescription I just got from my doctor and told them my tale of woe. They sell Teva here in Portland, but the pharmacy tech was very accommodating and looked around in their warehouses and found the Sandoz version for me. She said she thought Sandoz had been taken over by Teva, and I said either would be fine. I'll let everyone know how it goes. I agree about contacting the FDA!

Has anyone had luck with emptying the capsules in yogurt or pudding?? I'm spending so much money on antacids and changing my reflux med around! I was fine on 2 white capsules of the fluoxetine and now my lips and tongue are burning so bad from my reflux!!

Yes! I’ve been switched from fluoxetine tablets to capsule(the blue ones). It took me about 8 months to realize my HORRIBLE heartburn was being caused by the new fluoxetine capsule. I had been taking the fluoxetine tablets for 4 years without a problem. I’ll try opening the capsule to take with food or water, my insurance no longer covers the tablets. Not sure why. Thank you to all who wrote about this problem. Very helpful!!

Back to normal! No problems. I've still got these old Alembic caps I was told I could take to a neighboring Walgreens to be destroyed. I haven't done it; I'd be happy to submit them to an interested lab for analysis. If you can get Sandoz (or Teva, if you've got a good history with them) I'd say go for it.

Check on the bottle to see who the manufacturer is. I think that's important for bird-dogging our problems.

I thought I had found a way to do mail order to get the Sandoz manufactured Fluoxetine delivered to my house, but it still hasn't come. It's been two weeks and I'm desperate to get back on this medication, does anyone have any advice on where to go? Walgreens is not helping at all, I have tried so many times to get them to get a different manufacturer. Where do you go? Which manufacturer do you take? HELP

I think its more to do with the time u take yr tablets as I use the green and yellow ones and never an issue but took mine late 2nite when normally take in morning. Crazy burning feeling which I now know links to tablet but I never get this normally during the day. Eating bread had immediately helped reduce burn feeling so I am wondering if I did get tablet stuck in throat !!

I wanted to post a follow-up. After speaking with the pharmacist, he was able to substitute the capsules with tablets. I have not had a problem since. I don't know if your doctor has to approve or write the script a certain way in order to get them in lieu of the capsules, but I feel SO much better since the change! good luck to all

I'm in the same boat. I never had an issue with this medication until recently when the color of my pills changed. I was told that it was still the same medication but the heartburn it has caused is horrible and I've had to stop taking the medication that I finally had gotten built up in my system.

I started some Green/White Fluoxetine capsules last week, with the imprint E 91. Tonight is the second time since then that I've had really bad heartburn and acid reflux, following two nights ago now... Usually when I get heartburn taking some Tums helps, but not these past few times. Thank you for creating this topic; now I'd bet that it's the medication.

I have had severe heartburn often with the white and green Fluoxetine capsules (20MG). I thought I would die each time, and thought I was allergic to bananas since I took it after breakfast. Now I take it during evening meal and most of the time all is well. The tablets a friend uses don't seem to cause the heartburn, but cost much more. I guess you get what you pay for.

I take 80 mg of prozac and have tried 2 different makers, both blue pills. I feel like my esophagus is being burnt. As soon as I take the pills it starts. Its becoming unbearable. Im starting to think it is burning a hole in my throat. How am I going to be able to get off this medicine!?

Rose, yes I did just quit cold turkey. I'm not going to go through unbearable symptoms for a stupid pill. I'm glad I'm not alone in this situation though! And I agree with Tim because if this is gonna put people through hell then it is definitely not worth it. And I haven't had withdrawals. I'm fine. I feel like I do everyday.
