Blue Fluoxetine Causes Heartburn (Page 5)

Updated

Recently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?

I have come to find out that if I drink almost a whole bottle of water with the pills, that takes care of the problem. I get really bad indigestion too from it, but every time I make sure and drink a lot of water with them, I'm fine. Try drinking over half a bottle of water or even a whole one to be safe when you take them & I think it will help!! :)

"In lieu of any other discourse, I've been emptying the contents of the capsule into an empty glass and diluting it in about a cup or so of water, then using that to swallow my other pills. Where I'd once get heartburn with absolute certainty, I am now completely heartburn free AND my dosage isn't really affected much due to it being a capsule and not a slow-release pill."

thank you so much this did the trick!

I'm so glad I found these comments. I too just started the nasty blue pills. Horrible heartburn, feeling like my food is stuck in my throat. Been absolutely miserable. I have never suffered with heartburn in my life. I immediately called and had my prescription switched to a pharmacy that carries the white ones with green stripes!

I do believe it's the filters & dyes in the generic drugs that cause the problems. My grandson is having awful heartburn from the white pill. He's only 18. I've had issues with generic anti biotic so, even severe allergic reactions & the pharmacist himself told me it's the dyes in the generics that I'm allergic too. In can only take an anti biotic that is name brand. I also had horrible stomach pains from the generic,

I am taking the 40mg. orange ,blue and grey colored Fluoxetine. I have been fighting heartburn all morning. Didn't know what was going on until I put two and two together. I have had an " Esophyogal *sp. tie"! "Surgery for my heartburn six years ago. I could have avoided this elective surgery; If I had known it was the Fluoxetine all along. Which I have a very strong feeling it was the cause of all my prior heartburn attacks. Fluoxetine users BEWARE!

I've experienced the heartburn while taking the 40mg white/blue capsules with the 872/PAR imprint. However, it has happened only twice in the past few months since I started. The first time it happened it got so bad that I vomited. I noticed that there was a blue coloring in some of the vomit, the same as the blue on the capsule. I didn't eat or drink anything that I know of that was that color, but I had been to the dentist and wasn't sure what color their toothpaste stuff was. At the time I didn't look into the capsule aspect of it and it didn't happen again until just now. This time, same thing as the first time: I took the capsules and the heartburn was there within several minutes. A little bit later I was feeling worse and ended up vomiting again. There indeed was some blue coloring, but not as much as before, and the heartburn was still there. I ended up vomiting a few more times, each time with more blue coloring. At the moment the heartburn is considerably less painful- it pretty much let up each time I vomited whatever was that blue stuff. It's still there but I don't feel so bad now.

I'm just now at a complete loss as to why it's happened only these two times. There were no breaks in between the previous doses for these two incidents, while there had been breaks before with no problem. The one thing I'm certain about is that it's the capsule itself causing the problem for me.

I recently just started my 40mg capsules of Prozac (Fluoxetine) again- about 4 months ago, and this is the second time this awful burning in my chest & throat has happened. It also radiates to my back, between my shoulder blades & I feel like that is what hurts me the worst. Yes, the burning pain is also excruciating but I already have bad back problems so, this just aggravates it. I always thought it was because the capsules were breaking apart (opening) in my chest. I usually take a few huge gulps of water when I take my meds & I'm fine, but I don't know how I feel about continuing a medication that will cause side effects, such as this. Super painful! I vomit because the deep, burning pain is so intense & when I take a few big sips of cold, cold water, it does seem to give me some relief but, only for a quick moment. My question is, how do I stop this unbearable burning when its occurring? I do plan to speak with my Dr about switching this medication, but for now... I need some rapid relief, lol! Anyone with anything that has helped rid this or at the least, ease it?

Experiencing the exact same problem. Was on white dispersable tablets and switched to blue capsules two days ago (40 mg) and have had severe heartburn since! Will be speaking to my pharmacist asap! Unfortunate because the drug itself works quite well for anxiety

The blue capsules make my throat then chest hurt and have horrible heartburn. I was miserable for months with those bc I had a 3 months supply and couldn't get anything else until my time was due to get them. I emptied them in pudding even but the actual powder is horrid, tho didn't give me heartburn. No amount of water helped anything about them. Then I got the green/white ones which were ok, no heartburn or pain. Then the pharmacy couldn't get them anymore (guess everyone else wanted them too). So the pharmacist suggested the pill, not capsule. I take those now. I think those may be pricey tho but not positive on that.

I am so glad I found this page. I too were taking the blue Fluoxetine caps and thought i was going to die from the pain! I switched to the orange and green caps and that worked for about three weeks and the chest pains & heart burn started up again. I am going to try to put the power in water and take it that way like Elaine does.

No amount of water helped me with indigestion/pain from the blue ones. The green and white I could take fine, but my pharmacy couldn't get them anymore. Now I take the tablets with no problems.

I am having the same problem with the blue capsules. I get them at Sams club and they give me the worst heartburn I have ever had. I thought I was going crazy. I will look into getting a different manufacturer. I am sitting up right now with heartburn so bad it is causing my ears to hurt.

I have always taken prozac but when they changed me to the generic version of it I kept heartburn really bad. I have found a way to keep that heartburn at bay. I do two things before taking the generic prozac I take 2 generic ranitidine (zantac) if for some reason the heartburn persists I chop up ice in a shaver machine so that the ice is finely shaved up and I swallow 2 to 5 teaspoons of shaved ice and it does the trick evert time. I tried for years to treat the heartburn with many different remedies but this is the only thing that would put the burn out... I hope this helps anyone else who has to suffer from generic prozac. I have to take this drug and I had to put the fire out somehow.. Good Luck and GOD BLESS

Same with me. I was making myself vomit because the pain was so bad. I was actually scared of taking it. I made my dr switch me to liquid. Sooooo much better!

Get the liquid. YES, there is a liquid. I had to switch to liquid because of the heartburn.

I'm glad I found this discussion board and want to thank you all for sharing your experiences. I want to add my voice to this discussion. A very strange thing happened a few days ago when I took my blue fluoxetine pill and another maintenance med. I have been taking fluoxetine since the 1990's and it has changed colors over the years. Anyway, somehow one or both pills must have lodged in my throat right around my voice box without my being aware because several minutes after swallowing, I suddenly coughed up this awful tasting stuff. Not only that it was CAUSTIC! It burned my vocal cords and my throat all the way up to where my nose passages and ear tubes began and I believe I might have aspirated some of it as well. It was the most bizarre feeling. I felt this lump in my throat that was my swollen voice box and had the feeling that I could not clear my throat. Swallowing was okay though. I drank water and also ate a piece of toast to try to clear my esophagus. My system started to exude phlegm (sorry) I assume as a response to coat the irritation. And for a while I was so hoarse I could not speak! My throat remained extremely sore til almost the next day. Actually 3 days later I am still hoarse and my throat clearing mechanism is just now almost back to normal (I think). Of course I called the doctor's office to let them know what happened, and no medical person seemed surprised to hear that the acid content of the pills could do that. I am still coughing up phlegm (sorry) I assume from the upper bronchial irritation. It feels like a cold without the upper respiratory congestion. Anyway, sorry if I've grossed anyone out, but I remain so shocked that the content of these very common medicines is so caustic. I can hardly believe I've been swallowing them all these years without knowing that and that the medical industry is actually putting this stuff down our throats. And I wonder if it did that to my throat, what has it been doing to my stomach all these years? I was taking it partly for irritable bowel, for pete's sake. Make no mistake, something like this can be quite a shock to your system and slow you down for a couple of days (and nights).
