Blue Fluoxetine Causes Heartburn (Page 4)

Recently my pharmacy began giving me a new version of fluoxetine, which I have taken for MANY years with no problems.... however the blue fluoxetine gives me horrible heart burn. I use to take them at night before bed, but couldn't sleep, so decided to start taking them in the morning and still get the heartburn. I don't take them with any other meds. I tried an empty stomach, and after eating, but the results are still the same. I also get a bad headache (I think from the heartburn.) Has anyone figured out how to avoid this problem?

I have been taking 20mg fluoxetine for at least 8 years for pms so I usually take it for two weeks out of every month. I have been on a couple different generic versions and went on the blue pills 2 or 3 years ago. I NEVER had heartburn until I began taking the blue fluoxetine pills. Since I only take the pills half the month I realized I only had heartburn when I was on them and it is the only medication I take. Each month the heartburn symptoms became worse and reached a point where severe heartburn would wake me up at night. I just had my prescription refilled and my pharmacy switched to a new distributor and the pills are now green and cream colored with an E91 on them. Finally the heart burn is gone!! I would suggest calling around to various pharmacies and see what generic brand they carry. I know I will always ask before refilling my prescription-no more blue fluoxetine for me.

I have been taking generic Prozac for years and have had to start taking it with a carbonated beverage b/c for me it stops the heartburn. As soon as I take it with water ie. this morning, I get horrible heartburn and it even burns in my ears. I don't like having to drink soda or carbonated water everyday. But cannot take this pain!

I take my fluoxetine with applesauce in the mornings. Works like a charm. No heartburn.

I have suffered with this awful hurt burn for a year now I have found that if I sit up eat a bannana and drink a cup of camomile tea it eases of enough to fall asleep. So far I have found nothing that prevents it!

Same for me. Take it in the MIDDLE of eating. Eat some, take your pill, finish eating. Works for me.

I have exactly the same problem as your. I figured out the the blue cover of the capsule haste creating the severe heart burn. I changed this pill to orange blue or green one.
FDA should take strong action on this. This company should be banned.

I have tried both....the blue pill as well as the green/white. Both capsules give me horrible heartburn and pain that goes all the way into my ears. Then the headache starts. Any ideas on what to do... Is there a liquid Prozac?

For months I've been taking a white-ish pill 20mg. I was taking 2 a night, my doctor decided to prescribe me one 40mg of fluoxetine instead of the two tablets. The 40mg is a blue/white capsule this is the second night I've taken it and the second night of the worst heartburn of my life. It happens about 10-20 min after taking it. I took some tums about 20 min ago but they haven't helped yet. I'm going to ask my pharmacy to give me the tablets instead.

I finally figured out it is my fluoxetine causing my terrible heartburn! I feel gaggy, it's painful to breathe, and painful burning from the back of my mouth to my esophageal sphincter for about an hour and a half after taking my pill. I've tried switching up the time and what I eat or drink when I take it, I've even taken it with Rx heartburn meds.I reported it to the FDA. It is nice to see I am not alone in this uncomfortable struggle. I have tried going off the fluoxetine and it is tough for me and my family. I will speak to my physician soon as well. Just did a random search online and was so pleased to find all of this information. I'm 3 months "new" to Fluoxetine (white pills). The medication has been a breath of fresh air after Lexapro was no longer working (apathetic, very sleepy, unmotivated) after many years.

I have the same problem with the walmart fluoxetine the teva orange and blue pill 30mg, my heartburn is so severe !!! Now that I see someone else with this i'm going to ask to have my prozac changed !!

Did anyone have success using an over the counter heart burn medicine like Prilosec in combo with the Fluoxetine. And does the brand drug Prozac cause heartburn as well? My heart burn is 24/7, empty or full stomach. Its awful. But from an anxiety/depression standpoint its very helpful.

I'm on the blue fluoxetine as well--40mg. I've never had heart burn in my life and now it's so bad I've even gotten sick from it. I take my pills at night because they make me extremely sleepy for 3 hours after I take it. I like the medicine but gosh, this sucks.

I am now on Escitalopram or Lexapro and it is working well. I have no problems with heartburn anymore. It makes me feel awake, so I take it in the morning.

This exact thing is happening to me. Never had heartburn ever. It got so bad I was vomiting. Am on week #2 of taking the Brand Prozac, not generic. It took about 6 weeks for the heartburn to start on the generic so it's too soon to tell. However just yesterday started to feel a bit uncomfortable so I'm not encouraged. My good fortune with Lexapro came to an end but was taking it for over 10 years. Dr says maybe Zoloft.

I have taken Generic Prozac for 15 years. Lately a Walmart pharmacy took over my old pharmacy. So I take the blue pills now, not the white/green like before, and I have the most horrid heartburn after I take them. It feels like they are stuck in my chest. I'm glad I googled this on a whim. I'm calling the pharmacy tomorrow.

Glad I found this page, I was having severe pain from fluoxetine as well, called the pharmacy and they said that the tablets even before insurance are cash price only 10 dollars more, I will gladly pay another dollar or two a month if I can keep the benefits minus the reflux.

In lieu of any other discourse, I've been emptying the contents of the capsule into an empty glass and diluting it in about a cup or so of water, then using that to swallow my other pills. Where I'd once get heartburn with absolute certainty, I am now completely heartburn free AND my dosage isn't really affected much due to it being a capsule and not a slow-release pill.

The struggle is REAL with the heartburn/indigestion feeling about 20-30 mins after taking the pill. I find it hard to swallow b/c of the pain. WTF is up with this pill?!?!
