Yutopar Aka Ritodrine (Page 7)

This drug was used for women going into pre-mature labor. It was used to stop the contractions. Unfortunately it had major side effects on the babies. This was an experimental drug used from 1980 -1990 and was then discontinued. I was given this drug and my daughter was born 6 weeks early, had her by c-section. I begin to notice around 12 yrs old that problems were arising in her mental health, still not realizing that this drug played an important factor. I have found many women that this to has happened to, and I'm still looking for more families that this has effected. It is devastating and a nightmare for my daughter who is now 30 yrs. old. If you have any information I would really like to visit with you about your child. Thank you for reading this, we need to band together for our kids.

I was prescribed this drug in 1978 at 5 months and was told it was safe. The first anomalies I noticed were in the first months after my son was born - any change (move from hospital to home; first guest in our home; travel to visit family) would send him into wild hysterics. In hind-sight, it strikes me that he was like a crack baby that was in withdrawal. Later, as a small child, he reported that he could feel it when his fingernails were being cut - he could not bear to listen to anyone filing their nails because of the way he assumed it affected them. As an adolescent he developed academic and emotional problems. He was diagnosed as suffering from ADD. In early adulthood (age 20) he suffered a severe depression - I suspect he was undiagnosed bi-polar. He died later that year from a drug over dose. I consider his drug use to have been a form of self-medication. Has anyone else noticed similar problems, especially in your new-borns?

I have talked to so many lawyer s even those that are considered ambulance chaser ...they all say the same thing. The statute of limitations have ran out..... we as parents and our adult children got kicked to the curb.. and trust me there are millions... this makes me so mad at the system...the only good thing is the drug has been discontinued in the US.

I took Yutopar from 28 weeks to 33 weeks of gestation. I was at the emergency room every other weekend during that time because I would go into premature labor. At 33 weeks, I ended up in the hospital and was put on a Turbutaline drip (also used for premature labor). I remember my heart feeling like it was going to pop out of my chest.

My daughter is 28 and has a lot of the same issues that everyone is talking about. Her anxiety started when she was about 14.

I just read an article posted in the NY Times that said these drugs didn't even work.

Have you found a lawyer to take the case?

Martha, I have heard so many horror stories since I started this thread. I too was a late bloomer and putting things together that this was the cause of an experimental drug that we all took. I live in a very small town in Texas and it frightens me to think if I gave this drug to me here what happened to all the others that took this drug there are millions of parents, adult kids who were given this drug and the effect its had on all of our lives...I worry about the kids that are walking around that don't understand why they're different from everybody why they can't cope and thinking it's just them....how many are locked away in mental facilities how many who are in the penitentiary and how many have committed suicide these questions haunt me...and yet they have swept it under the rug...every lawyer I talked to won't touch this case because they quote "the child lived the medication done its job"...it sickens me to my core....

I just an hour ago made the connection between yutopar in 1988 and issues my twin daughters deal with now at 27. I have been reading this thread this morning, and I'm horrified, angry, and scared. What can be done to help these young people?

I took yutopar in 1988. I gave birth to twins. Both girls, now 27, struggle emotionally and mentally. Just today a friend suggested yutopar might be to blame. As I research online, I discover we are not alone. I am interested in your story.

Had my daughter in 1989 after being on Yutopar for about 5 weeks she has problems with body pain, severe headaches, has been diagnosed with bi-polar 2, have been wondering for years if the Yutopar has been a cause of this?

Mommakat, thank you for searching for answer about your child's mental health and sharing your story. Unfortunately you and your son are not alone, there are millions out there.. this drug was used so many years and I have not found one child that has escaped 100% from its evil doings. So many of these kids are locked up, walking the streets, or have committed suicide, if they are not living at home like my daughter. For years I even asked my daughter what the hell is wrong with you, and I still carry that guilt. I have talked to so many lawyers and can't find one that will take this case, they all say the same thing, the child lived so the medication did its job. It makes me so angry that they can get away with this...we were cheated out of a child and our kids were cheated out of a life. Medschat will not let us communicate with each other which is unfair. There is no way to phone each other or exchange information god knows I've tried.

I feel exactly the same way. How do you condense a 29 yr nightmare into one or two paragraphs. I went into early labor in 1985 and was given this drug and brethine from about 10 weeks til delivery. My son was 3 weeks premature. He was born with underdeveloped lungs and had jaundice and some kind of infection. At 3 weeks hospitalized with pneumonia. He cried constantly and not cholic and couldnt be comforted and still to this day cannot be. He's aggressive and angry. Rude and impulsive. Loses everything. Cant hold a job. Has no friends and no life skills. He has been diagnosed and treated for everything from ADHD to schizophrenia. No medication has really helped. We need help. It's about time. And after seeing all these stories I am overwhelmed with the similarities. My heart has been broken over the constant struggles I see my son have when in my heart I have suspected it was due to this drug. I would definitely participate in litigation. I welcome any medical referral that can give us some hope and treatment options. Please contact me {edited for privacy}. Maybe now is the time God will answer our prayers! I will never give up on my son

Maggie, I think I'm hearing guilt in your story, if you are blaming yourself for not understanding what was happening to your daughter....well I want to you to understand this was not your fault....we trusted and paid doctors for this drug.. in turn the doctors trusted the FDA. And so we watch our kids on a daily basis battle demons that we can't see. Everyday is a challenge and somehow we moms and dads that love our kids so much keep going. You sound like a wonderful caring mom that loves her kids with your whole heart unconditionally. I thank God your daughter is doing as well as she is and has such a wonderful mom. Thank you Maggie for sharing you story.

we are all complaining and sharing our common denominator...so what are we going to do about it??? I might just take all the posts and show them to a lass action suit attorney and see what he says. This needs to get out there and we owe it to our children. When I finally told my son why he is the way he is, he was relieved because it gave him a feeling of some validity that his issues were not really "him". I thought he would blame me, but I was wrong. My heart breaks for him.

I was given Ritodrine @ 30 weeks @Beth Israel Hospital in NYC. It stopped my labor, I didn't have any side effects. My daughter was actually 4 days late and I had induced but quick labor since I was already dilated and effaced. She was perfectly healthy except a little jaundiced. She has a 140+ I.Q.. She is the second of my 6 kids. She has allergies, excema, childhood asthma, but those are likely genetic. She had terrible impulse control and I took her to a Child Psychiatrist @ 10YRS. She is a Beautiful, Intelligent, Loving Mother of a Gorgeous, Intelligent, MOST LOVABLE PERFECT DAUGHTER! I was terrified!!!! I suffer from PTSD, (I was assualted, had a lot of TRAUMA since MY CHILDHOOD,)! I didn't have symptoms until she was 8. Anyway, she is a loving Mother & Motherhood has calmed her down. She had asked me about any TRAUMA that could of happened to her that she didn't recall. I told her about all the DRS. & that her Dermatoligist had prescribed Atarax for her itching because of her Ecxema. I told her to tell her Psychiatrist that her allergies caused her a lot of anxiety. I thought that her allergies, her not feeling good to actually SUFFERING, caused her "outbursts"? She did so well in HONORS CLASSES! She was on Atarax (HYDROXYZINE) all through Grade School. I don't know how she did it? She has very close siblings. My first daughter is 2.5 yrs older & my Boy/Girl Twins were born 16 months after her. No Preterm labor with anyone except my last daughter. I feel like I'm writing, telling too much? I will check back weekly to this page. If you want my info I will give it to you as soon as someone responds? I know this page is old? I will look for other Ritodrine pages. Thank You! I'm not going to tell her until I find out more about this. It seems all our Children have the same "Mental" side effect? Thank You again

I am in.. I have a 21 year old daughter with sleeping disorders and psoriatic arthritis. She is constantly in pain. I took the oral form of Yutopar in 1993 for premature labor. She was still premature by 2 months.

So sad to hear your stories.. I'm in the same boat. It's important that we all talk and I'm trying to find out about a legal suit.

We must ban together and go up against the drug co. with a legal suit. This will not make our children's suffering go away but it will help offset the cost of all the diagnostics, medicines and not least of all the anguish we have all endured. How can a drug co. put an experimental drug on the market without advising that it is experimental and the possible side effects? Did any one tell you what might happen???
