Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 7)

Updated

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

I am in the same boat. I have been treated for bipolar just find out that I have a simple social anxiety. I've always had Xanax on had and I got to the point where I was taking huge doses (1mlgr) twice or tree times a day. My Doc. started me on Buspar and Xanax as needed in addition. I also have adult ADD, so always had Adderral too. When Buspar is taken with the right amount of Adderral it works wonders! I haven't taken Xanax more than half a pill maybe 2 or 3 times a week after I started Buspar. I just got the Buspar dose increased because I've been on it for almost 3 months now. All I can say is give it some time and get the right dosage. I got tired of being treated like a criminal at my farmacy but now they don't give me a heard time only for Adderral because the dose is pretty high. Buspar works with Adderral that's all I know... Not sure why...

Awe thank you Missy! And your right. But girl. Just last week I was told by my endocrinologist medical assist, that my thyroids hormone level was 0.14 which I guess is too high! I was hypo with gaming loss of weight after having my thyroids removed but now I'm said to be hyperthyroid which is why my hormone levels are up high and its causing fast metabolism and everything else like adrenalin, high bp, and of course anxiety. I guess but not for sure, this is why I been having anxiety but my endo also said May not be from that for real. I'm not sure but I will going in to see him soon. Thank you for your input. Best of luck and wishes to you too!

I've been on first one anti-depressant than 2 different kinds. Switching brands until one combination seems to be working somewhat. I have taken the Xanax as needed once in a great while but am afraid of the addiction.
The Dr. Prescribed buspar for me and I give started it last nite for twice a day & will increase til we feel I hit the right dose. She said it works good along with an antidepressant so I'm hoping for the best. I am pleased to hear it is not addictive. Ill sign in , in about a month to give it a chance & let you know how this works. And also if you do or do not gain weight with it.

Hi, just read the your post. I took Prozac for 12 years with not problem and it really helped then it seemed to just quit working so they put me on Cymbalta and that worked about 4 years and stopped working...then they put me on Wellbutrin which made me a raving lunatic within a week so got changed to Buspar....welllll the Buspar made me very manicy, I spent more money than usual, became very emotional mainly angry and then sometimes tearful. Soooo I went back to doctor and she said taper off the Buspar and just take Xanax which I have taken very little of until lately; I am not abusing them in any way but I do sleep better if I take one.
The problem is....now I am so easily upset by anything and I cant seem to control my temper or my mouth. I am a registered nurse by the way. I have mainly worked at psychiatric hospitals so I know the signs that signal trouble. I don't feel that I have dementia....I am 64, but I think this has something to do with medication..I plan to go back to my personal physician and see what could be causing this.

Hi there, I totally agree. Unfortunately I moved to Germany here. Saw a Neurologist yesterday who made me feel as if I am a dependent drug addict, which I am not. Have had a wonderful Dr. in the US, she was not friendly but arrogant to me.
I am very concerned with my own body and have been doing fine, I do not like to argue with anyone but this is after all my safety and life. Besides I am under a lot of stress and constant negativity from the woman I stay with.
I really need help.

Hey everybody! It's me Dj. I know it's been awhile since I post. I'm still going through motions wondering what's going on with my hormones and thyroid replacement medicine,Amour. Well I went for lab work the 6th of Sept. 2013. I got a call back from my endo that thyroids hormone level was up 0.14, and that's why I'm so anxious and having all the symptoms I'm having cause of over medication. CRAP MAN! THIS IS SOOOO HORRIBLE, AND DANGEROUS! Although my endo does not feel there is much to be concerned with. Her is also not the one going through the horrible symptoms. You know? These drs are something else! Of you don't stay on top of them. I feel that problem is enough to go insane! But with God's blessings and help. I feel he is leading me in the right directions. My endo also didn't do a Reverse T3 test on me asking with those results for hyperthyroid symptoms and being over medicated. So I questioned that as well. I'm Nov. Ill be seeing another endo. This one will be a woman endo. I heard she was good and its hard to get in to see her if you cancel your appt. I hope that's a good sign that she is an excellent doctor. A friend of mine referred me and told me she got her together with her hormone meds. I pretty she works wonders for me.I have an appointment next Friday to go in to see an Internist. So we can figure out what's going on with my hormone after having my thyroids removed. I pretty this ids the answer before November. So far, I'm hearing that this is the right direction so I've already preyed and put it in the Lord's hands. Best of luck to us as we continue to stay strong. Let's nut give up how and continue to prey.

Hi ... In my experience.. Buspar didn't have any effect on panic attacks. In fact I didn't get any feeling or effect what so ever. Xanax seems to be the medication that works and now there are talks of them discontinuing this product.

I understand & agree 100%....I to am in my 50's, and was put on Buspar today. I have been taking Xanax for many years for anxiety/panic attacks. After several years of experimenting with what works best for me, Xanax worked best. Seeing that it has worked the best for me, they must change it out of the blue. Panic disorders run in my family. If their problem with giving me what helps is about the addition part of it....why didn't they take me off 20 years ago? I don't drink alcohol, so there is no problem there. I simply have a panic disorder that is hard to deal with. I wish my brain produced whatever Xanax has in it that controls these attacks when they come on. Had no trama growing up whatsoever. So, what is the problem with giving people who honestly need this medication?? Other than younger people who use this with alcohol to intensify the affects just to get a bigger buzz, or high from the alcohol?? Not fair for those who don't do that who really need it.....People sell xanax on the street all the time to make money to do whatever with...Real people who need it go through a Dr.'s office visit and get treated like a common street druggie......Makes me sick.....

I went to a doctor some years ago thinking I had cancer in my throat, Could not swallow properly. He figured out that it was just stress and anxiety. He put me on Valium for the short term and Buspar for the long term. It takes up to 6 weeks for the Buspar to kick in, but it is not addictive. The Valium helps in the meantime. I took the Buspar for a few months, and after I removed myself from the stressful situation I was dealing with, I found that I did not need it anymore. It is not like Xanax, where you end up feeling sick because you stop taking it. You actually have to go through a horrible withdraw period with Xanax. I heard that the only two things that you can die from if you withdraw is alcohol and Xanax. You can withdraw from H and no one will care. It will not kill you. So pick your anti-anxiety drug as you wish, but I can tell you Buspar will fix your problem if you just give it some time. Then, change your life...get out of the situation that is making you so stressed. Don't use Xanax unless you don't care if you become a drug addict

Good feedback,...it's a slippery slope with addictive substances,...it's a rare individual that get's involved and doesn't get hooked. It's a shame too cuz they often work,...but I've never found a pill that takes care of a bad situation, which often is the cause of anxiety/depression.Suffering can get so sever though,I don't think I'd be here had I not self medicated most of my 58 years.I've quit everything now, tobacco, caffeine, even detoxed off of a 8 year,860 mgs a day Oxycontin habit Dr's were giving me for chronic pain,...only finding out life to be a misery trip.My daily routine was destroyed,I lived on Ensure for 8 years,...and although there's been a lot of improvement,it's obvious I suffer from anxiety disorder.I find Xanax works really well, but no way do I want to go through or add to what I've been going through since 2001 when they started detoxing me.I still take 4 mgs of Suboxone a day, otherwise drug free. It's been a unbearable journey to get here, with no turning back,...but I often feel I need some relief,an escape from the anxiety/stress that is overwhelming most of the time.

Bluebird do you know where you heard that about Xanax? I almost died during a cold turkey withdrawal. While I was never able to kick the medication, my usage has always been under control. It just has a way of knocking you on your ass when attempting to discontinue. I thought the Hospital wouldn't help. When you fail all the tests they even ask you to stay!
