Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

Have you tried counceling.
If your whole family has this, wouldn't you like to stop the cycle onstead of covering it up with drugs.
I know its scary but alot better for you and your family. Drugs dont solve problems. GAD is physiological not physical.
Please think about taking the first step to a healthy family. Just a suggestion from someone who has been there.

I've had my share of anxiety, and what might be classified as panic attacks over the years, though things seem to be improving a bit.

As for the comparison of Xanax vs. Buspar, at least for me, the Buspar simply does not work, seems to have essentially no effect.

With my current doctor / health care provider, I'm allowed to have only 12 pills a month of Xanax, but 30 pills a month of Buspar.

This is ridiculous, as the Buspar does not work at all, but the Xanax really does.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until something really severe happens, and then I'll take the Xanax, which works predictably every time.

Apparently the FDA or DEA or whatever agency has decided that Xanax is evil and dangerous (???), which is the one prescription that actually does something useful.

So . . . what am I supposed to do? Go find a drug dealer somewhere who can provide the Xanax?

This is so stupid, it's hard to believe. But OK, this is getting a bit off topic.

Xanax seems to work quite well in my situation . . . and the Buspar is completely useless.

Buspar is for ANXIETY. It is easy to confuse Buspar which has the generic name buspirone with Wellbutrin which has the generic name bupropion. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant, Buspar is an anxiolytic.

Same thing with me. Genetic plus became severe after 2 major cancers. Now docs won't give me xanax because of "addictiveness". I have been on it for about 15 years. I am 58. I just started buspar in addition to fluvoxamine and clonazepam. Why are they targeting us older working people? Obviously we need it and are using it, not reselling it. They need to look at the younger people.

I feel your frustration.
I too was also on Buspar for awhile, prescribed as an alternative to Xanax . . . had no effect, at all, except sometimes a headache.
Still have several bottles of it unused. Have gone back to Xanax, but try to use only occasionally when it's really needed. It's just my opinion (unqualified as such may be), but at least in my case, what seems to work is to resist taking the meds more often than needed.
Sometimes that can be hard, but it's what I try to do.
However, I am completely unqualified to suggest anything to change your course, except to say I absolutely wish you the best of luck.

Google Translate (may not be 100% accurate):

As for the transition phase alprazolam / buspirone, only the doctor should prescribe, I took both, at different times. Although Buspirone is of another class 'non-benzodiazepines', I consider it to be the safest of all allopathic ansiolitics, because it is light and efficient, does not cause physical and (or) psychological dependence. The best is the brand 'Ansitec' 10 mg. Buspar, as well as Buspanil, in Brazil, are practically harmless, and should have less than 10% of the active principle Buspirone. The effect of Buspirone, 10 mg, is felt after 20 minutes of ingestion. They are like electrical 'small shocks', in the cerebral precortex region, and adjacencies. Gradually, its anxiolytic effect manifests itself surprisingly; many prefer Buspirone to Metaqualone in long periods of pre-launch research of this substance in the drug trade. It also has the advantage of being the only 'anxiolytic', in which it can be used concomitantly with alcoholic beverages, without this being highly advised against. The alcohol - buspirone combination causes only drowsiness, preserving other 'mental faculties', so you should not do this 'mixing' if you are driving or doing tasks that require attention. It is better to abstain from alcohol if you do not intend to sleep if this mixture is made. It does not disturb cognition, in low dosages, and this 'shock sensation', is present, but does not even bother; on the contrary, it is highly relaxing.

This sounds awful! To take you off of a medication that stops the panic attacks seems inhuman to me. I see it too. My doctor is constantly trying to reduce my xanax. He put me on them when I was having severe panic attacks. He prescribed .50 4 times a day. Now 3 years later, he has cut me to .25 twice a day. I am managing but I can see a future without them and it frightens me. I wondered if Buspar would be a good alternative.

Imagine how much worse it is in guymon, Oklahoma where the Dr's all got in trouble for misusing their script pad and everyone in town had to go cold turkey from everything they were getting from their Dr. It hasn't been a good thing and addicts still have their drugs, ppl that have never been a recreational user are finding themselves dealing with some very shady people for some very stronger and scarier types of opiates which has never really been around here. I never heard about it growing up anyway not much but now people that you would never expect to do drugs are hooked on opiates because they are just being cast aside, forgotten and told to learn to live with it after they had been handled by the doctor. It's in the past so I didn't have to feel the pain because they made it so I wasn't in as much pain so my whole life they numbed my pain and didn't think I should have to feel it and now that I'm grown and you know I have had this my whole life they're telling me we made a mistake, entered a whole generation of people into Junkies, now don't do drugs, live with the pain you know. Don't step out of line as normal. Be well-adjusted and for God's sake learn how to live with the pain. You don't need a pill for everything even though we gave you a pill for everything. It's frustrating and I feel has set me up to where life was much harder for me because I expected someone to treat my pain because that's what they were doing back then and now all they're doing is saying you're sorry and treating them to dislike social outcast. It's really evil. He has made such an ugly thing only for people that are weak-minded or stupid which is it. Anyways it was really kind of you.

I use the 15mg dose of Buspar for IBS symptoms. I have anxiety attacks that make my colon flush, for lack of better words to describe how I feel. For some reason, things like bus rides with no bathrooms, long lines at amusement parks, TSA lines, traffic all of a sudden coming to a stop are just a few of the things that makes me start worrying about where Im going to go. I take a 1/3rd of a Buspar and a few minutes later, I don't think about pooping my pants. Before Buspar, I went to Six Flags and literally pooped 17 times and didnt go to another amusement park for the next 10 years. I just came back from a Mediterranean Cruise. Our first excursion, I was a nervous wreck. I took a 1/3 and I was ok until we were waiting for the bus. I wasn't as nervous but was still thinking about the bathroom. I took another 1/3rd and never thought about it again. It didn't even bother me when the tour guide said there were no public restrooms in Marseille. I hope this helps someone else cuz Buspar made my trip fun. And btw, 1/3rd of a Buspar pill will get picked up by the TSA scanner but they are cool about it

My doctor is the same way. She is even trying to get my mom off of her 0.25mg xanax... she's 62 with major heart issues, anxiety, and depression. A few people abuse medication and the people who actually need them get punished.

Hi, I am 55 going on 56. Your age sounds young to be going through menopause. However, if your Mom is still living ask her when she did. It's a good indicator. I am so sorry about your anxiety. I wish I could help you. I am suffering myself right now. I try so hard to stay busy with work, which is over whelming because I have my own business and do it ALL myself, and exercise. I love to run/walk and do Classical Stretch with Miranda on PBS. I hope I come out of it soon. I did last year. I am taking zanex .25 and buspar right now and can't say they are a big help. Unlike most people, I really hate zanex. I don't like the way it makes me feel. Good luck with your life decisions. I have two boys both in college that I wouldn't trade for the world! But raising children is extremely high anxiety. You don't get out of this life after having them without some kind of worry. It's life. The good times for me are GREAT. I enjoy my boys when I don't feel like I do now. My husband is loving and understanding. I don't want them to see me like this. I want a better image, if you know what I mean. There is no real bad stuff in my life it's a chemical disorder. I think of all those poor people all over the world struggling and still can't put things in perspective. I know it's the bad chemicals in my brain that need to be balanced. I have an apt. with an HRT expert on the 28th of this month. I truly believe it's all hormonal. I guess you can be out of balance at any age so if you want to pursue HRT with your GYN just to make sure by having some tests it may be a good idea. Again, my best to you. It's amazing how many people are suffering with anxiety.

Don't listen to anyone. Your body will tell you what it needs. Klonipin is supposed to be half the strength of Xanax and last longer. ADD medicine is similar to speed and will only make you anxious again or more.
