Will Covid 19 Affect Our Meds From China? (Top voted first)

Updated

I take Xanax for 15 years as needed. I am a senior. Not only do 97% of our antibiotics come from China, but other meds mixed into benzodiazepines and other medications are from there as well. Since China has shut down most of their factories, will the USA become short of our meds? I cannot stop taking my Xanax because I’ll have a seizure. We need to rely on our own medications to be made here. I am scared of a shortage more than getting this virus. And I know our President is doing all he can to help us.

At this time there is no reason to worry, because there is a supply already stores in the U.S., which is enough to last several months. I cannot, however, speak to what the future might hold, though.

The FDA warns that Xanax carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, irritability, and mood changes.

As to the Corona Virus, if you are senior, you do have to be careful, because if you catch it, running out of your current medications will likely be the least of your worries, since it can be fatal to some people, especially if they have other underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, or asthma.

I don't mean to be a fear monger, but this virus can be very dangerous. My husband works at a hospital, as a radiographer, and his mother lives with us, she's 74 and has severe asthma, so both of us are being very cautious to try to make sure we don't catch it, and give it to her, she's been in isolation at home, since March 3rd. She is going out only to walk the dogs, occasionally, or for a brief ride in the car. Her doctor doesn't even want her to go in for her usual appointments, she is to stay away from waiting rooms, stores, and etc.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Re: Eddy (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

Of course you selectively believe only what you want to believe. Most sane people know that this virus originated in China. If it did not then show me your evidence that it started someplace else. You say that it did nor originate in China because that is what you want to believe. If you have evidence to the contrary then present it.

First Eddy does seem like he is about a half a bubble out of plumb. He has no evidence whatsoever to back up his post. Second, I too, do not believe it was done on purpose. However, the virus did start in China.

I do not care what the chinese think or say--or do. The coronavirus started in china and they badly misplayed the virus. It would help if they admitted responsibility instead of lying about the virus.

You're actually fooling only yourself Bella. Don't come on here to insult me about abuse and such when you know nothing of my situation.

Lost a child Bella? I am sorry, my condolences to you.

I've also lost not one but two sons, age 15 and 16, through no fault of their own or mine.

Please don't tell me that your intrepid grief is a lifelong panic disorder, I'm calling you out -- you're an addict and you need far better help than you've gotten. You've been robbed lady.

You’re uneducated I see. Most of our drugs have not just China but India as well ingredients from both those countries. So yes the ingredients are from C H I N A. So aren’t the 97%of our antibiotics. Love my President.

Thank you. But Eddy says it came from a bat that flew in from Mongolia, while I saw a video of many bats in their soup. I believe neither. I do believe this was purposely done.

Re: Bella (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

I had a Bat fly into my Hotel room in Laughlin. Many people eat Bats.

Bats have likely been consumed as a food source since prehistoric times in the Asia-Pacific region. Chronostratigraphic analysis of archaeological sites indicate that bats could have been exploited as a food source since 74,000 years ago by Homo floresiensis. On tropical islands, hunting large fruit bats were a worthwhile expenditure for prehistoric hominins. These megabats could be easily captured in caves in large numbers, and processing effort was also minimal.[9]

Bats have been hunted by Aboriginal Australians for thousands of years, extending into modern times. Popular game species are the black flying fox and the little red flying fox. In 1997, it was estimated that the Aboriginal people of the Top End consumed 180,000 flying foxes each year.[10]

While it has been suggested that the Taíno people of Puerto Rico consumed bat meat in pre-Columbian times, no bat bones have been documented in their midden heaps, making it unlikely that bat meat was a substantial dietary component. No other New World cultures are thought to have hunted bats for meat, though bat bones have been identified in midden heaps on the Caribbean island of Saba.[11][12]

In the Torah and in the Bible, the book of Leviticus (11,13-19) forbids consumption of bat: "These you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: (...) the bat."

In the Geographica of Strabo it is described the city of Borsippa (now Birs Nimrud in Iraq), where there was a large number of bats captured by the inhabitants, who "salad them to eat them".[13] In the sixteenth century Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi refers in his treatise Ornitologia that bats have a white meat, edible, and excellent flavor.

Re: Eddy (# 11) Expand Referenced Message

Well then people are bat s*** crazy, how’s that. But that’s another topic. I am disgusted with these democrats who would rather you get sick and worse than to pass this bill our President has for the working class people for relief. You can think what you want to, but these Demorats will use a crisis for anything. Very sad state of this world. I happen to see many others feel same as myself about this Chinese virus. Most of our meds are made there and India as well. Most people don’t know this. How the hell does one know where a bat actually flew in from? Certain areas of China are eating bats all the time. Look at their videos. What about the dogs. Disgusting. Now all are self isolating? More people died from the Spanish flu. Something is just not right. Earthquakes, tornados, floods, locusts in the middle east and Africa... People must pray to God. That’s all we have.

Re: cliffvettej2 (# 13) Expand Referenced Message

I will never trust a communist country who is against the USA. I hope this taught us to manufacture our medications right here in the USA. And I believe this was part of the trade deal China did not approve of. I do believe this was purposely done because the immediate timing was very quick. My churches are closed that had never happened in all my years and with any epidemic including the bubonic plague. I feel this could be a chastisement sent from God because of the abortion bill passed btw in NYC by a Democrat and they celebrated it to be ripped out at nine months! Why if the numbers are correct does NYC have the worst out of the country? Including California. Anyway not to get off topic but if you think this is normal, people need wake up to even see the earthquakes, floods, etc... I happen to believe in God as a devout Catholic, not a Saint, but a practicing one. Now everything is closed? Why didn’t this happen in 2009 with that flu where thousands died yet the former admin didn’t declare an emergency for six months. Oh that was Trumps fault too before he got in...wake up people to see who the real enemy is!

Re: Eddy (# 15) Expand Referenced Message

Racist? Ok call me a racist and I’ll continue to say the Chinese virus. Just like the Spanish flu and the Middle East respiratory syndrome also known as MERS. The Chinese virus came from Wuhan China. 86% of all the cases come from Wuhan. The West Nile virus came from Uganda in the 1930’s. The Saint Louis encephalitis which broke out around St Louis at first. Nobody had a fainting fit over it back then except you. The case of China is different. It’s Government tried to suppress warnings about the Coronavirus and looked the other way, giving it the room to become a national and then a global crisis. It DESERVES to be connected to the virus it did more than its share to let loose on the world .... no matter what you and the sensitivity police say. Grow a pair.

Hi Bella,

I've taken Xanax and generics for decades and share your concerns. At the same time, I am unable to find a new prescriber after relocating, they are harder and harder to come by. I have heard that xanax patients under medicare/medicaid will be taper and quickly -- not something I need for old age.

I'm under being forced to taper off and have so far cut 1mg off my daily regime. They no longer help at all, just a hindrance that makes me a slave. This taper is hard hard hard, but it's better than relying on U.S. doctors, APRNs, suppliers or pharmacists to provide it on demand. They simply do not get how sick this drug can make you while on it or going off or after a successful taper off.

Rather than concern yourself about dying from a seizure (unlikely since you say you take it intermittently i.e., as needed, you need to face the fact that the future is here and one day maybe this year, maybe in five years, you'll be forced off too.

Read up on the benzo crisis and find a forum that can help feel less dependent on this evil drug and more dependent on the obvious strengths you possess. It is time to face facts: this drug will become harder and harder to get over the next five years; woe is the day your prescriber retires or just says, no more for you. It's much bigger than Chinese suppliers of xanax.

Re: QAGirl (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Sorry to disagree. If not for my pills I’d be in a straight jacket over losing my son. For the loss of a child is a forever panic attack. My doctor told me I will never go off them and I was relieved of this. I am in my 60’s and really don’t care what happens. All I know is if you want to be wean off good for you I don’t want to and happy I have a compassionate doctor whom I’ve been seeing for 15 years. We have a good repore and it’s psychiatry not any other type of doctor. So stick to what is good for you and so will I. You can use scare tactics on me if you like but what you say is simply not true in my case. I just don’t understand why people think Benzos are a terrible drug. It must be the ones who either abuse it or want to wean off them. If one day they can no longer make them, there are other Benzos out there. But thanks for your input. I’m good.

I get meds filled from India. Have for years. I started because I oppose the Communist regime in China and did not want to enrich them in any way. Yes, I also do not buy items made in China. Since President Trump took office, I have hoped and prayed that he would succeed in helping the Chinese people and the thousands of Muslims who live an harder life. None of us should buy from them. I am hopeful that this Virus will do one positive thing - bring back drug and medical supply production back to the USA. And if we must buy from a nation that can do things cheaper, well India is not a Dictatorship. I can provide some links if folks wish it.

Re: Michelle (# 22) Expand Referenced Message

I agree with just one thing you said. And that’s to bring back the manufacturing of medications made in the USA. Why would you “hope and pray our President helps the Chinese and the Muslims in China?” That doesn’t even make sense to me. He’s helping the American people and is the greatest President we ever had. The Chinese government need help their own. By closing the borders, our great president has kept out not just the deadly Heroin and Fentanyl, but child trafficking and disease. Anyway, you don’t know where your medications are made. So I don’t get this response. Not all ingredients are from India.

Re: QAGirl (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Great post! It will be 10 years on Monday that I was put into the ER & spent a week at my local Hospital for withdrawal. I just visited my Xanax collection I have put together since then, even found 2 bottles of 100 Boca 2mg pills & one bottle of 100 Dava bars 2 mg with a 2012 date on them. I was prescribed much more than I ever needed, and also know how dangerous this medication is. Its Poison, whether it comes from China, India, or Indiana. Those patients like Bella who speak like they have a lifelong entitlement to obtain Xanax are very mistaken. Also be advised Doctors are less likely to prescribe this medicine to Seniors, especially if you have to start with a new provider

Re: Bella (# 21) Expand Referenced Message
I was also told by my infamous Dr that I would need them for life, no I do not want to go off, nor do I want to spend any time tapering because I don't have that kind of time. I repeat, NO I DON'T agree with what's happening here in the USA with benzo's being politicized and blamed for overdose deaths when it's nearly impossible to OD on xanax. I will be sick for a long long time, but Bella, my prescriber IS retiring at the end of this year. I HAVE spent SIX LONG YEARS looking for another prescriber in two different states and the day has come -- at the end of 2020 there will be no one prescribing xanax to me. I am angry as hell, I've been lied to for years by medical community, and now I'm a criminal? No, I'm a woman with severe panic disorder who needs this med and needs it work. Here's your warning, your day is coming too when you hear those magic words, "No more for you."

Re: Bella
To: Forum

Let's remember who we're talking to: the epitome of a self-absorbed self-pitying addict who's driving this discussion, one whose cognitive skills are and one who admittedly cares more about "MY XANAX" than how covid-19' is affecting our country, our planet.

I see it all the time, the person who says "I need MY XANAX." As if they're doctor put a bunch of XNX generics into some safety deposit box for druggies. She's angry, scared, hurt -- mean.

As such, I'm out of this thread for good but applaud all who attempted to share the current xanax crisis with this poor sad woman.

I am sorry Bella. We're nearly in the same boat but you've got not a kind word for anyone here who's shown you some kindness and truth. Keep your blinders on, but fasten that seatbelt. Your clouded view against reality WILL end and it will be a xanax-no-more life for you. Guaranteed. The writing's been on that wall for years. But pop a benzo and don't bother reading. Best to you, sincerely,

QAGirl
