chug..my state just passed new law's that will make it difficult for pain patient's to recieve their pain med's. As it is thousand's of chronic pain patient's have now been suddenly dropped from doctor's and pain clinic's.currently no doctor will take new pain patient's.If one break's a leg and goes to er..they are told 'go home and take tylenol. There are sign's in clinic's and urgent care 'no narcotic's prescribed'. Ppl in unrelenting pain will overdose on tylenal. What alarmed me about tylenel and other such compound's is that even when patient's take the smallest dose..over a period of time it accumulates in the body..so if someone has taken tylenel for 24 year's or longer..even a small dose can harm someone. My doctor warned my husband not to take tylenol as he is over 65..at this age the liver can not process it well and becomes dangerous..as it is after years of taking it..his kidney is failing.

The truth is usally the best. Dont try to give them any buzzwords or things you hear on line. Just tell them you are in pain, and what is available to treat it. If you go in and start giving doseages, drug names, buzzwords--"lets titrate the dose to my pain level", they are not stupid. They have people coming in all day wanting drugs for pain. Honesty is always very refreshing and welcome in these situations.

It does NOT accumulate in your body. It is safe to take. The issue with tylenol is taking it with alcohol or other drugs that are hard on the liver. There are millions of people who have taken it for more than 24 yrs who are fine. The dose (max) is 4grams thats 4000 milligrams or 8 extra strength tablets, 8 hydro 5/500, 8 tylox, 5mg oxycodone/500mg apap, etc. That is why they made the 10/325 percocet so a patient could have more oxycodone than 12 of the 5/325 percocets provided. It wasn't the oxycodone, but the acetaminophen (APAP) that was the issue. So, instead of 12x5 or 60mg oxycodone and 3875mg of apap in 12 percocets, you can now have double the oxycodone with a given amount of apap.

Regarding your relative who is 65. Tylenol is STILL SAFE. AGE IS NOT A FACTOR, its the metabolism and function of the body. As we age our organs sometimes do not work as well. Many elderly people have less liver and kidney function than they did when they were younger. SO, you have to watch the dose of everything, alcohol, drugs (including tylenol), salt, caffeine, and so on.

To make a blanket statement that over 65 should not take tylenol or that it is dangerous over a long period of time is ridiculous and irresponsible. Stick with things you know something about, and leave medicine to those of us who know about it. It will save a lot of people getting worried because they read something online that some "expert" posted. How do you know they were an expert? "They had all these facts and figures they posted", which mean nothing. Absolute garbage.

Donald..you have false information. Not only does research tell of the danger's of tylenal but my own doctor who cares for the older population has warned those over 65 have a more difficult time processing tylenal in through their kidney's and liver's. I know a dozen men/women who took low doses of ibuprofen/acetaminphen throughout their lives and are now suffering kidney/liver failure. Every one of their specialist's have deemed the reason to be the acetaminphen. You can take or reject this information..it's your kidney/liver. If you are basing your information on the label of the bottle or what 'you think you know' then ok..but don't indanger other's lives with your information. Do your own research!

One more thing..past studies on the effect of acetaminophen on the liver only involved an large doses of acetaminophen..studies were swept aside on the effect's of the liver/kidney from therapeutic doses of acetaminophen(long term use). New studies are showing just how dangerous this otc drug is..epecially on the eldery. One place to look is 'does therapeutic use of acepteminophen cause liver failure ' That is one site among many.

Donald, the daily limit of Tylanol is 3000 mgs. It has been reduced from 4000. Check it out.

True, recently they have recommended lowering 4gr to 3gr. That is a fact. In fact the FDA wanted to remove tylenol from the market. If people followed the label directions, they would not have the problems, but I've seen people take 10 ex str. for a headache. Just dump them out in their hand. It becomes very dangerous it uses up an enzyme in your liver and once that is gone, you can no longer break it down. As far as elderly patients are concerned, I said the metabolism and organ function can deteriorate and so you have to be careful. My issue was the blanket statement that "NO ONE OVER 65 should take it". That is pure bs. Its a case by case patient by patient and also, its very complex because some patients cannot take nsaids because of certain anemias etc, so they must take tylenol for OTC pain relief. Good luck all.

True. My sister-in-law was allergic to aspirin products, so she could not take ibuprofen either.

Your are going thru opiate withdrawal...not a "bad reaction" to a few safe fill ingredients like lactic acid. stop being a drama queen...its sad.

My doctor and I have a long term, trusting relationship. When I started receiving the Oxycontin OPs, the pain relief disappeared! I told my doctor about this, and even showed him websites like this one.

Thanks Purdue, I am one of the many patients who will no longer be taking your crappy formulation. Its Baxter morphine from here on out.

The OP formula has been out long enough for people who deal with true chronic pain to know if the medication they are taking either A works or B doesn't. Its just that simple. I have taken Original OC and the new OP and there is a HUGE and scary difference.
Vernwon. Please refrain from speaking of chronic pain issues if you have no realm of understanding of what its like to live in helacious pain every day of your life, find a medication that truly is miraculous at controlling pain for a solid 8-12 hours and then have it ripped away and have NOTHING else in comparrison on the market available.. Yet its still WAY more expensive because there is NO generic brand.. I call BULL OP's are Generic Garbage

Ok now for good news. You CAN still get the OC brand oxycontin ONLY in the 20mg tablets. Your Doctor has to specifically sign for it and you have to find a pharmacy that has it stocked and is educated about this regulation. Usually Hospital pharmacies carry them because that was the stipulation to keeping the 20 mg OC around is that it IS proven to work better than the OP. They kept the 20mg tabs around only in hospital setting or specific Doctor approval. Nothing higher than the 20mg tab because of obvious abuse issues.. So if you have a great Doctor who will listen Do your research and present it to him. You TRULY can still get them..

NO THATS NOT TRUE. AND---most hospital pharmacies do not sell retail, (I said MOST), and Purdue makes it one way, the new way, so if anyone has it, its "new old stock", not new stock. Seriously, think about it. Purdue: "we need to make it the old way in 20mg because the hospitals know the new way doesn't work", No, thats not how it goes. Your dr has nothing to do with it. If they write a script for oc, the pharmacy can fill it with new/old because its all brand. The dr doesn't have to write a script that says "OXYCONTIN x MG, OLD KIND ONLY", thats ridiculous.

You are very confused. OP is brand. OC is brand. They are both brand. Purdue doesn't make some OC 20's for the people in the "know", and OP 20's for the rest of us, they make OP's PERIOD.

OK So I feel confident the issue has been answered, reanswered, and answered again. There are NO plans, ZERO/NONE/NADA plans to change oxycontin back to the "OC" formulation. I think if you are truly honest you would admit that the op work fine. There are some individuals, maybe 1/10 or even less, 1/20-30 that they dont seem to. If you swallow on the proper dose, they work. If you want to inject/snort/crush/chew/suck/whatever, then yes, the oc are superior and that is the same reason they are gone. Rehabs were full of OC abuses and I'm sure purdue was getting tremendous pressure from the DEA and FDA. It wont go back, get used to the new.

ADMIN CAN YOU CLOSE THIS ??? THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO SAY THAT IS VALID.

RPH,

Having posted a few messages here and not getting a satisfactory reply to my inquiries (other than complaints about OP's), I concur with your reasoning and agree that this thread should be closed. I believe the original question posed has been answered numerous times and it's now just turned into a bitch session against Purdue... not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not what the intent of this thread was.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sorry but you are wrong. The op's are not as effienct as the old. I now pay more for them and that old pain all over body is back with a vengence. They are not a good painreliever. I have to take more to get the relief i need and they still don't cover the pain.

maybe you are one of those they dont work as well on. That doesn't mean I'm wrong, I said there are some, 1/10 or maybe less even that they dont seem to. Maybe you are one of those. Its oxycodone, 80mg, they have and were tested and retested to make sure it dissolved over 12 hr and it does. It may ber slower, or it may be more even, where old ones let out more in the beginning and then at about 6-8 hrs had much less left in them than 1/2 or 1/3. Maybe these are more even so that at 6hr half is left. I dont know. I'm just saying that most people that complain are the ones who chew, snort inject etc. If you take it as you are supposed to and it doesn't work for you , then thats a shame. the old ones didn't work for everyone believe it or not. I hope you find something that helps you@
