Where To Purchase Paregoric (Page 3) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've used Paregoric for 15 years and can't find it. Is there anywhere in the U.S. or other countries where this can be purchased?
Hi~
Paragoric is once again available from your pharmacist.
I get mine from Von's in Oakhurst, Ca...But others (posted on People's Pharmacy) have gotten theirs from Raleys, Costco, Walgreens, etc. I'm in a rush this evening, but will save this post and tell you the manufacturer that is once again making this "God given medicine" to those of us suffering from IBS, etc first thing in the morning...in California it requires a triplicate (isn't that stupid? remember when our mothers would go to the pharmacy...well, so did I as a matter of fact, and just purchase it over the counter? I could go on and on (and have on treads re paregoric)about why a lot of us needing this medication (I now take it for IBS...have had abd surgeries too) but, can take it for earaches (especially as a child) headaches...my understanding, from all our posts, is that it was "temporairly removed from market" due to lack of need...not worth manufacturing it because not enough demand for it...so, a lot of us started getting it from Compound Pharmacy's (Dr writes RX, and Compound Pharmacy mixes it up for us)...I'm babbling...in a hurry...I will sanely write the name of mfg co tomorrow, I promise...for those of us suffering so from such embarrassing a disease as sudden diarrhea, this is truly liquid gold!X
Sorry to say here is another example of big government. My grandma used to give it to us kids when we had belly aches and or diarrhea. The watchdog again doing it for out own good..yeah right...another freedom gone. I swear, all of this should be available to anyone who wants to buy it..
hi karen...
First of all, you must have a prescription from your Dr.
Then, contact your local pharmacies (Walmart, Vons, Raleys,, etc) and ask if they can/will order it for you...for a long time (see history on Paregoric on this Site) paregoric was taken off the market...so many of us were soooo upset! We wrote/called the manufacturer (can't remember name of it now, but post for it and I will find it...don't think you'll need it though as, again, it is back on the Market (yay!) In California (where I live) one must have a triplet RX, but in a lot of states, just a "normal" one from your Dr will do...if there's anything else I can do to help, pls let me know? Regards, Betty
hey sevlec...(and all),,,my pharmacy (in No. California) Vons, gets mine from Hi-Tech Pharmaceutical. The last RX I picked up was week before Christmas, and if I remember correctly, my insurance paid the same as it did before it disappeared...now that I have opened m ybig mouth in print, I shall go into my Medco plan on computer and see exactly what they charged! Will keep this in my "inbox" and reply later with cost...HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!
Kathyrn (and all)...Good Morning! Thanks Kathyrn for your reply...gosh, I never thought about how my post re ordering
from Brazil (or wherever) "sounded" until I posted second one next day (after reading what I originally wrote, objectively)...Anyway, on with life, yes? And, as I've keyed before, it is once again available in U.S. and that's what we've all wanted! And, thanks to this Site, I learned, while it was unavailable, that I could get it with my Drs RX through a compounding pharmacy! Regards, Betty
Hi Mare and all...
I live in California...
I was given Paregoric as a child by my parents for upset tummy, earaches, etc...
I've always had problems with my stomach but wasn't diagnosed with IBS until my first colonoscopy in the 1990's...
I am now 68, but as a child, Paregoric was available over the counter...
My family dr (and the one who prescribes it) is into holistic type treatments, as well as all the standard treatments his patients need...he has prescribed it for me for many years.
Over a year ago, it became unavailable...a lot of "us" suffering from tummy problems starting writing on this Site, complaining that it was no longer available.
I went to my gastroenterologist (at my family Doc's request) and he prescribed tincture of opium (which is about 10 times stronger than Paregoric) telling me that that was the closest to Paragoric he could prescribe. He also warned me that if if took more than a a dropper full of it "I could die"...scared the heck out of me, as I trust Paregoric...I know my system can handle it, and it indeed helps slow down my colon...
I do not work...w/o Paregoric, I do not feel safe away from home (or close to a bathroom)...
Due to the work of (especially) a couple of people on this website, the manufacturer (can't think of the name of them now...) started making Paregoric again, and it is once again available by RX...
It works. It truly works for my symptoms (and many more of us)...
It sounds (to my layperson's brain) like your Dr won't do a search (internet) to find out about Paregoric, as it's been around for so long...
My feelings are that if Doc's are worried about us becoming addicted to this stuff, wouldn't they worry a lot more about tincture of opium then Paregoric???
How frustrating for you to KNOW something works for you and being unable to find a Dr to prescribe it! I would think Florida has enough Senior Citizens that Drs would have many requests for it (Sr Citizens being those of us around long enough to have been treated with it for so many years...
Have you read all the past posts on this Site? The frustration so many of us went through while it was unavailable...and now we have the fear that it just might become, once again, unavailable, due to "lack of demand"...Many patients are on stronger medications to stop the diarrhea problems and have never even heard of our "licquid gold"...
I just wish I had an answer for you! Do you have RX coverage on your insurance? I know it's expensive (my insurance covers it, but the cost is over 100.00/bottle...)
I think...hmmmm....I would start with a gastroenterologist...tell him/her about your tummy problems, that you have had great success with Paregoric, and go from there? Even if you're not diagnosed with IBS, if you have problems with diarrhea, you must have a "nervous tummy"...
I hope this helps...please don't suffer or become more or less "house bound" when you know there's something that helps you!
Sincerely,
Betty (Elizabeth)
Hi Lola and all...
But...it IS once again available! Thanks to several people on this website, pharmacies can once again order it from High Tech Pharmaceutcal...
You said the words right out of my mouth though...I'm 69 (wah) and remember having it as a child...many, many years for tummy problems...
From what I understand from all these postings it was "supply and demand" type thing...Drs started prescribing SUPPOSEDLY more sophisticated drugs (sub for Paregoric), and not Paregoric....didn't pay for manufacturer's to make it any more...
Then came news that if one has a RX, and there's a Compound Pharmacy close to you (or you could order by mail to reputable one), they would make up bottle for you...only thing against that, was one had to pay cash as most would not bill insurance...
Are you able to purchase it near you?
Regards,
BettySJY
Hi, but...but...it IS legal! I have always (even as a child when it was over the counter, no rq required) been able to get a rx from family dr for my IBS symptoms...then, due to "supply and demand" (i.e. tincture of opium...WHICH IS 10X STRONGER THAN PAREGORIC...being the rx prescribed more than paregoric, gastroenterologists prescribed that (I am assuming with the thought it would work much better as other newer drugs), "something happened" and manufacturers just stopped making it...hence sites like (thank you so much!) this one started talking about it...more and more people joined in with their thoughts, and it once again became available...I find myself wondering...hmm....if FDA (when they were investigating it) wasn't wondering why people were/are using it for pain as well as diarrhea...and that got them involved?...anyway, in the state of California, before it became unavailable, I had to get a triplicate from my Doc...now that it is once again available, it just takes a normal prescription...need a refill? Just call my pharmacy...but yes, it is LEGAL... in fact, when it was "off the market for a while", my Dr (after I refused to take tincture of opium because of its strength) wrote me a rx to take to a compound pharmacy...much more expensive, and thank God my insurance covered it, but walla, "the people beat the system again"...and then, walla, it once again became available...and, Walgreens does carry it! if you read down to other posts, you will see where it was taken off, and then became available again? I swear to God and all of you...I am 69 years old...a bottle (depending on my "breakouts of IBS) can last me 3 months or so...I do NOT abuse it (it tastes TERRIBLE), and I do not want to build up tolerance to it so take it only when husband and I are on "the road" or at a party where I fear I might have a break through...When we were all l"children", it was our parents who gave it to us for tummy aches (even earaches, etc), so it was controlled...ok...that's when it was OTC...but someone was responsible for us and used it only when we needed it...then "we grew up" and for some of us, it was still available OTC...ok..granted, there are "drug seekers" among us and addictive personalities...but, geese, look at the contents on the bottle...I think it's 3/5 (3 being opium, 5 being alcohol)...take a break! One can go to a licquor store and ...well, you get the jest! OK, OK, I'm rambling, but...darn it, if you've ever had IBS or just plain tummy ache/diarrhea and have an attack in public, there would never be a discussion pro/con this "licquid gold"...it works! Just use it responsibly, and it will treat you responsibly! In closing (I promise, I promise I'm almost through) even if you don't have insurance and have to pay for it (price varies, but over 100.00/bottle), it is worth it! "if it works, you will fight for it"...look at all the "new drugs" out there (for various ailments) that down right kill you (even tincture of opium...~) paregoric is TRIED AND TRUE and gives many of us a LIFE. Thank you for reading me! Betty
Oh this just makes me so ANGRY!!! ok...OK...I will calm down. OK., you live in a small town, in the country...do you have insurance? I think, now that it is once available, you can order it from a pharmacy on line (although ...hmm...I question it's "accuaracy"...there MUST be a way you can get it! This is so STUPID~~~ok...one thing I noticed is that you have not mentioned going to a gastroenterologist...is there one you can go to? C'mon everybody that suffers from this very, very embarrassing condition, LET'S PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER TO HELP HER FIND A DR THAT WILL PRESCIBE THIS GOLDEN LIQUID! Why, oh why, are so many "so afraid" to prescribe this when it WORKS, and they obviously monitor our usage! Do you mind sharing where you live? I would think, but have not checked, that now it is once again available, you will be able to order it from Canada...but...once again you need a Drs RX...ARGG! Drs give out strong pain pills, yet balk at paregoric? They also prescribe tincture of opium (10x STRONGER THAN PAREGORIC), from what I've gathered, with less a hasal than paregoric....I will continue to "think"...but my brain is not that large and I am a lay person...c'mon everyone, let's help her! The last thought I leave you with this evening is "can you make an appointment in a large city with a gasterenterologist? Call, explain where you live, your problem, and that THIS WORKS for you and you will be traveling to him/her if they will give you a physical and prescribe it for you...??? Ridiculous...totally ridiculous...AND I CAN JUST FEEL MY BLOOD PRESSURE GOING UP...UP...UP...~~~ CAN you print out all our "feelings" on this site, all our problems when it was off market, and take it to your Dr???
Approximately one+ years ago manufacturing was stopped. My physician wrote me a R/X for a compounding pharmacy. This satisfied my needs until recently. My pharmacist informed me that it was now being maufactured once again. I am now a very happy camper. The compounded version tasted horrible. I have been on the manufactured product for over six months.
It occurs to me that the Paregoric and the Cough Syrup would likely be different items. Dr.s in the U.S. can still prescribe a codeine cough syrup, and depending on the illness often do. Paregoric is a much stronger opiate formulation meant for diarrhea (often used for stomach and intestinal flues). This country used to offer the cough syrup OTC, until the last 10 to 15 yrs or so. Paregoric has been Dr.s script only for a long time here. In re: the question of actually receiving it if you order it from out of country... It will be hit and miss. The DEA and FDA have a regular system of randomly checking packages that look like meds entering the U.S. Back when one could order a number of medications via the internet, I used to order quite a few things. I got a package intercepted by the DEA from Spain once and informed that they had done so. I was warned not to order any more. I still did while it was easy and possible. Then the govt forced the shutdown of the sites that had opiates, barbiturates, benzodiazapines, etc. They even closed down the strictly informational site regarding which sites were most reliable and other questions. It is still perfectly easy to order from places that sell antibiotics, antiyeast, ibuprofen, so on and so forth. If you get a place to order paregoric in those two countries, and you write it down here for all to see, the DEA will likely be all over it. Just my guess. They are definitely looking though. And if you find a way to order from there, you may or may not get your package. You will absolutely not get a refund!!! The United States does not want ANY type of opiate medications coming from out of country. And you already know why the docs are so hesitant to prescribe paregoric. The DEA watches the pharmacies and the doctors like hawks.
Hi Monica, I am sorry to hear about your issues, my wife has the same issues and paregoric does help. It is expensive and some insurance do not cover it. You will have to check with your provider. If you are in Medicare, they should cover it, up to the donut hole. We have a local pharmacist compound it, not all pharmacies compound drugs, in fact few do. We live in Alabama, and use a pharmacy in Harpersville, AL. Harpersville Pharmacy, I do not know if they can or will ship it.
I hope this is helpful, God Bless
For stomach cramps, yes, yes and yes. It takes away the pain immediately and everything else is just watered down medicine.
Ask your doctor about opinion tincture for the diahrrea . Zofran for nausea along with a steroid.
Does anyone know where tincture of opium can be purchased? I have prescription from my Gastro doc, a "team" of docs, actually, that said for some, this is the only rx that works, if you can find it, they said. (My intestines are pretty messed up, IBS, since I was 13, then to treat uterine cancer, I received internal radiation, which killed the cancer, yea! but burned & scarred up nearby tissues, esp intestines. then finally about half of intestines had to be removed. Add severe fibromyalgia. I was able to function somewhat, but now I'm layed up in bed, life passing me by because the Fed laws changed! I must take 5 RXs to do what paregoric does! Great for liver & kidneys, right? How does this make sense? I welcome suggestions, thank you in advance.
I remember as a child and young woman being able to have one small teaspoon of paregoric for stomach viruses and diarrhea. I still remember how the bottle looked and that bitter taste. Why? Because such a bitter taste could give relief. For so many years I've wished that it was available. I believe I only took it maybe 5 or so times a year. But there is nothing that works like paregoric. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for almost 20 years. I've had to stay away from many drugs that could be addictive. But I believe that paregoric can be used episodically without necessarily leading to an addiction risk. I don't say this lightly. It's important to have a drug like this for some of the awful symptoms some of you have described. In the same light, I had taken marijuana as a recreational drug in my youth. Once I became a mother I stopped. Some years later I had foot surgery and when I got home I was incredibly nauseous with unbearable pain. My husband got one joint in which I partook and the nausea stopped and the pain lessened. I only used it that night. The point is, yes - there are risks of addiction with many drugs. But it is not right that so many will suffer because they cannot get the one thing that can help them. I'm no where as sick as some of the very unfortunate people who have contributed to this conversation, but I got to this site obviously because I am so sick right now. I feel as though we are up against money and politics which dictate to doctors and pharmacists. I wish we had a group for those of us that are sick that had some of the organization. clout and influence needed to help us. My heart goes out to all of you- we need an underground railroad or something.
The only place in the U.S. is Durant, Mississippi.
I have always bought it in Nassau, Bahamas. In any drugstore, over the counter.
I fought diarreha for 30 years, thru many doctors I had a doctor help me by using a cholesterol medicine called Welchol. It helped but was not a cure I was diagnosed with cancer and started Chemo at the very beginning. I had severe diarrhea and chills. I called my doctor and told him what was going on and he had me stop Chemo treatment immediately and said they were just treating the symptoms not the problem and sent me to an infectious disease doctor. I ended up having C diff in the blood stream. With this doctor it seemed to improve my problem immensely. I had previously been checked for C diff in the stool. I would think if they can have recreational marijuana and medical marijuana they should be able to have paregoric early on. I used paregoric until they took it off the market. It was the only thing that would help me.
I need this for my daughter. She can't keep anything down and the doctors do nothing but prescribe crap. She'll die soon if she doesn't get help!!!
