Where To Purchase Paregoric (Page 13) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've used Paregoric for 15 years and can't find it. Is there anywhere in the U.S. or other countries where this can be purchased?
It just became available at Walmart in jan of 2014
I can't BELIEVE that! Honest? Gosh, I'm in a small town in California, and I have been able to get mine for...hmmmm....is it a year (or more) that it's been back on the market? Time goes so fast...gosh, have you had to wait this long to get it, or was there another pharmacy in your area?
What's the name if the store?
I bought some today in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a Lennon product manufactured in SA by Pharmacare Limited, building 12, Healthcare Park, Woodlands Drive, Woodmead, 2191, SA.
It is a schedule 2 drug here so it is not kept on the open shelves but behind the counter in the pharmacy (drug store in USA) and I had to ask for it and explain why I wanted it. It was very inexpensive: R14,95 for a 20ml bottle - I think that is less than 2$. It goes by the name of Paragoriese-Elikser and it is a tincture. I hope that helps.
Maryann? I'm so sorry, this is the first time I've read your post! Von's (Safeway) and Raley's in California...those are the two stores that carry it in my small town...where you able to find it?
Pam? Honest, if I didn't have insurance, I would consider purchasing it in another country...BUT...do we know if we can "trust it"???
It IS expensive in US...and I guess that's the old "supply/demand" theory...it just shouldn't be that way...and yet, I guess I do understand how expensive it can be to make just a few batches at a time...
I guess I just REALLY don't understand...why, oh why, do we have to take DAILY RX's for "our problem" other than paregoric, when this basically INEXPENSIVE medication works so well? I don't think I will ever understand that...
Pam: Do you have a telephone number for that pharmacy in SA? Or, can I just write them and ask if they will send me a bottle when I send them the money first? My dr. does not prescribe it. Do you know if they mail out to the US?
Thank you.
Betty: I wasn't able to post anything as the day after Christmas the retina of my left eye became detached and I wasn't able to read, focus, get on computer, drive, work, etc., you name it....Quite an extended recovery period and still not over. I just saw the post from Pam in So. Africa and asked her a question about the pharmacy she purchased from. I always enjoy your posts so much. I am from the east coast of Florida and still my dr. does not prescribe paregoric. He did prescribe a "morphine syrup" for a friend of mine and says it's better than paregoric, but I don't believe it.

What is ASA?
Rubbing vanilla extract onto the gums sometimes eases the pain.
To Red Baron: ASA is the short for aspirin. The entire acquired chemical name being: acetylsalicylic acid. A(cetyl) S(alicylic) Acid. Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_aspirin) has a very interesting article on the development of the properties of salicylic acid from various plants, through to the achievement of what we now call an aspirin tablet. The plants with this general chemical have been used by people for pain for thousands of years. (APAP is the short term for acetaminophen)
I have a rare bactireal cancer and i am going through cemo, the nausia and diarea is unbareable where can i find paragaric?
Paregoric was over the counter in the 1940's, 50's, 60's. I think by the late 60's you had to sign for it, but it was still available. Finally, by the late 70's or early 80's it was only available by prescription and now it doesn't appear to available in the United States at all. The doctor would prescript paregoric and Pepto-Bismol mixed for intestinal flu when I was a kid in the 50s. The chemist would mix it for you. Later Donagel PGas available.. Later it had to be signed for and it now gone. Nothing has ever worked as well as paregoric for IBS, and intestinal flu diarrhea. It stops the pain, relaxes the intestine and allows for bowel movements to happen with the horrible spasms of the colon.
When my babies were teething I would give them papagoric. Blessed relief. I am now a great great grandmother. My G.G. granddaughter, five months old is starting teething. Nothing seems to help. I was told about an old wives tale, where you get a foot off a dead mole sanitize it wrap up in a clean cloth and hang it around the babies neck. Believe me, if I could find a dead mole, I would truely try iit. The mole would have to be dead because I would not kill it. Does any one know anything to help teething babies. It is really serious..Any good ideas,? HELP!!!!
My local compounder will make paregoric liquid for me with a doctor's prescription. However, insurance won't cover it, so it runs me about $300 a month, which I cannot afford. Insurance won't cover it because it pays by what the ingredients cost and not what the compounder needs to charge. I use Vital Care Compounder in Hattiesburg, MS, and can get it, just cannot afford it. I suggest you find a local compounder and see if they will make it for you.
As a child I was perscribed paragarc for night mares and I usually got it in tea before bed for most of my small childhood. By Second grade they did not sell the big bottle anymore and I went through terrible bad headaches so please be careful with this stuff. As an adult I remember it so well I remember the taste and now and diagnoised with Parinoid Psycosis and was wondering if this could have had an impact on that diag. I found out as an adult it had Opium in it and my mother prob did not even know. but I think I was addicted to it and then had withdrawals. Really wonder if there was ever a study on long term effects of the stuff.
Where?
Maybe people could try Marijuana instead. In many states it is now legal for medicinal purposes and it is not addictive as anything with opium in it. You could ask for the strain that has the least amount of whatever makes people high in it as that seems to be what has the most medicinal compounds. Good luck.
