Where To Purchase Paregoric (Page 12)

I've used Paregoric for 15 years and can't find it. Is there anywhere in the U.S. or other countries where this can be purchased?

For stomach cramps, yes, yes and yes. It takes away the pain immediately and everything else is just watered down medicine.

Paregoric is made by a company called Hi-Tech. Since it is made with opium, it is a controlled substance. Some compound pharmacies can make it for you, but it is hard to find one. The opium in many cases can be replace by a morphine compound. I hope this is helpful to any looking for this medicine. My wife has to use it 4 times a days, and the prescription runs about $400-$500 a month when medicare doesn't pay, otherwise the co-pay is about $10.

I made some typo errors the first time I posted this. Here is the corrected version: Paregoric was over the counter in the 1940's, 50's, 60's. I think by the late 60's you had to sign for it, but it was still available. Finally, by the late 70's or early 80's it was only available by prescription and now it doesn't appear to available in the United States at all. The doctor would prescribe paregoric and Pepto-Bismol mixed for intestinal flu when I was a kid in the 50s. The chemist would mix it for you. Later Donagel PG ( Donagel with Paregoric) was available.. Later it had to be signed for and it now gone. Nothing has ever worked as well as paregoric for IBS, and intestinal flu diarrhea. It stops the pain, relaxes the intestine and allows for bowel movements to happen WITHOUT the horrible spasms of the colon.

When my babies were teething I would give them papagoric. Blessed relief. I am now a great great grandmother. My G.G. granddaughter, five months old is starting teething. Nothing seems to help. I was told about an old wives tale, where you get a foot off a dead mole sanitize it wrap up in a clean cloth and hang it around the babies neck. Believe me, if I could find a dead mole, I would truely try iit. The mole would have to be dead because I would not kill it. Does any one know anything to help teething babies. It is really serious..Any good ideas,? HELP!!!!

I contacted Hi-Tech Pharmaceutical in Amityville, NY by e-mail. They manufacture paregoric and distribute to many pharmacies including CVS and Walgreen's. My local (Florida) CVS pharmacist checked online and found that CVS has paregoric in their warehouse. I got a new prescription from my doctor and had it filled a day later. I got 120ml or 4oz and it cost $69.14. I think my insurance paid some on it.

My local compounder will make paregoric liquid for me with a doctor's prescription. However, insurance won't cover it, so it runs me about $300 a month, which I cannot afford. Insurance won't cover it because it pays by what the ingredients cost and not what the compounder needs to charge. I use Vital Care Compounder in Hattiesburg, MS, and can get it, just cannot afford it. I suggest you find a local compounder and see if they will make it for you.

As a child I was perscribed paragarc for night mares and I usually got it in tea before bed for most of my small childhood. By Second grade they did not sell the big bottle anymore and I went through terrible bad headaches so please be careful with this stuff. As an adult I remember it so well I remember the taste and now and diagnoised with Parinoid Psycosis and was wondering if this could have had an impact on that diag. I found out as an adult it had Opium in it and my mother prob did not even know. but I think I was addicted to it and then had withdrawals. Really wonder if there was ever a study on long term effects of the stuff.

Ask your doctor about opinion tincture for the diahrrea . Zofran for nausea along with a steroid.

Make it yourself! Grow some poppies, dry the bulbous heads, then grind them up in a coffee grinder. Place into a strainer and pour boiling water over the powdered poppy heads. You can mix the resulting liquid into iced tea. You may have to play with the dosage to find one that suits you. Much better than taking chemicals - get your opium naturally!

Maybe people could try Marijuana instead. In many states it is now legal for medicinal purposes and it is not addictive as anything with opium in it. You could ask for the strain that has the least amount of whatever makes people high in it as that seems to be what has the most medicinal compounds. Good luck.

Responding to "marijuana" mention; . . .Perhaps you were referring just to the comment regarding pain. The original question and issue here is how to stop diarrhea. Paregoric does help with pain as well, but it's primary purpose is to stop diarrhea. I'm sure the Paregoric was very helpful when rubbed on a child's gums too. Paregoric has some wonderful healing qualities that have been hard to find a replacement for. It is legally made again, and a person needs a doctor's prescription to get it.

Don't know about diarrhea but did notice remarks about pain and cramps. My mother-in-law told me about paregoric in the early 60s when I had babies. Didn't know it was opium which will kill any kind of pain. She gave it to me for baby's colic and to make him burp. It sure did work. When I had another baby in 1969 I was looking for it as I had previously been able to buy it in any drugstore over the counter but it was not available anywhere. That is also when I found out the ingredients and I was somewhat shocked that I had fed my babies opium which I knew was addictive. At least none of my children became addicted and none of them was into drugs later on although they all smoked cigarettes and two of them are addicted to those.

Your physician is the person to write you a prescription. Not all doctors believe in using paregoric because it is an opiate. You should talk to your own doctor and ask about the possibility of her/him writing a prescription for you. Take it to the pharmacy and if they do not have it, they should be able to special order it.

I got the prescription for Paregoric from my doctor. He couldn't use the computer to print it as it was not listed on a prescription list. He had to type it in himself. CVS had it in their warehouse, and ordered it when I gave them the prescription. That was last year. Since then, on two occasions it has kept me out of the ER when I had a couple of bad attacks of cramps. One 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon eases the colon spasm and allows me to have the bowel movements without having to suffer for hours prior to being able to go. I have had these bad attacks of IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome) for most of my life. I've had many colonoscopies and there is nothing wrong inside my colon.

Does anyone know where tincture of opium can be purchased? I have prescription from my Gastro doc, a "team" of docs, actually, that said for some, this is the only rx that works, if you can find it, they said. (My intestines are pretty messed up, IBS, since I was 13, then to treat uterine cancer, I received internal radiation, which killed the cancer, yea! but burned & scarred up nearby tissues, esp intestines. then finally about half of intestines had to be removed. Add severe fibromyalgia. I was able to function somewhat, but now I'm layed up in bed, life passing me by because the Fed laws changed! I must take 5 RXs to do what paregoric does! Great for liver & kidneys, right? How does this make sense? I welcome suggestions, thank you in advance.
