Where To Purchase Paregoric (Page 11) (Top voted first)

I've used Paregoric for 15 years and can't find it. Is there anywhere in the U.S. or other countries where this can be purchased?

Mare? Gosh, there MUST be a Dr SOMEWHERE near you that will prescribe it? What if you called Drs offices and, before setting up a first consult appointment, ask if he will prescribe Paregoric?

I am able to obtain mine from private family Dr...

What state do you live in, Betty/Eliz? I live in Florida but didn't want to call a bunch of drs. as they might think I am addicted to a narcotic and I have heard that paregoric is considered a narcotic. Whatever it is, it WORKS for diarrhea. I will research it more here in my city and see if I can find a dr.....Thanks.

Betty/Elizabeth: What an awesome post. Thank you so much. Paregoric was available OTC when I was a child too and my Daddy used to get it and rub it on our gums as babies and when we had colic. I have been so busy working, etc. that I have not had time to research drs. here in Jax Beach, but I am going to. It really is embarrassing at work to have to "run" to the restroom several times a day. I have never been diagnosed with IBS, and I had a colonoscopy in December and the dr. did not mention any problem. But, my "problem" comes and goes and right now, it's HERE. My insurance RX coverage is not good but I would buy the paregoric if I could get a RX for it, no matter what the cost. I tried to find the dr. who prescribed it for me in the 1970s but he must have retired (or passed away) as I cannot find a listing for him. I agree with you--the tincture of opium sounds much more potent than paregoric and as long as you are careful to take just what your dr. prescribes, I'm sure it's fine. I would take that if I could get a dr. to prescribe. Thank you again for your great informative post. It really encourages me especially after today at work when I was not a happy camper. I am 4 years older than you are, so I was around when paregoric was "no big deal." I mean, no one worried about taking it and as far as I knew, no one became addicted.

I do not understand how you can get a prescription for
Paregoric ,and especially after reading all the messages from so many people that are truly suffering and can not find it anywhere? I believe 314Rat has the only true answer answer to why no one can purchase it anymore. So, we will just suffer on out of this life into our too familiar toilet bowls, ounce by ounce of diarrhea!

Sam, Mare and all..

Sam? It IS once again available. There was a period of about 1-1/2 yr (or maybe a bit more) when no one would manufacture it. There's an outfit call Hi Tech Labs who made (and does again) it, but as it had not yet been officially EVER approved (I think it now has, but may be wrong about this) and there really is not a high demand (the old supply/demand theory), Drs have been prescribing other, new drugs as well as tincture of opium in lieu of it. There are many of us though who have this very, very embarrassing problem (diarrhea), have been on it for many years and have lived a "care free life" while taking it...when it last "disappeared" off the market, many of us spoke out, and wrote/called Hi Tech...and, alas, once again it is available...am I making sense?

Mare! I so enjoy your posts too! I don't have the problem every day either but never know when it's going to hit...Pls, pls, keep us posted...it will make my day to read that you've found a Dr that will prescribe it for you!

Leave it to FDA to screw up a good thing. I am 65 and I remember when you could buy paragoric across the counter. Then young people started abusing it. That's when it started selling as a narcotic and you had to sign for it with a valid ID. When people started abusing that system, you needed a prescription to buy it. Why take it off the market when your DR prescribes it for you.

Betty, Your posts are very helpful and I am glad to know that this "wonder drug" is still available. My mom gave it to me for my regular "stomach aches" (in the 60's), then as a teenager I would take it preventively before any event or outing (horse shows, school functions, etc.) otherwise I was in the bathroom with cramps and awful diarrhea. I had forgotten how effective it was and now my 13 year old, who has IBS, is really suffering; I am definitely going to ask her pediatrician to give us an Rx for it! my husband is a dr. who used paregoric all the time in infants suffering with stomach pain. paregoric is tincture of opium just at a much lower dose.

WELL, I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SITE FOR OVER 2 YEARS NOW, BACK WHEN I CONTACTED THE FDA TO FIND OUT WHY PAREGORIC WAS DISCONTINUED. NOW IT IS FINALLY BACK ON THE MARKET. WELL THATS GREAT BUT IM UNABLE TO FIND A DOCTOR THAT WILL PERSCRIBE IT. NOT MY CARDIOLOGISTS ( HAD TRIPLE BY PASS IN JANUARY), NOT MY SURGION, NOT MY GP, NOT MY NEW ONOCOLIGIST ( KINDEY STONES BOTH SIDES LAST WEEK) NOT MY GYN. THEY ALL LOOK AT ME LIKE IM NUTTS, OR AN ADDICT. I TOLD MY ONO, MY GYN GAVE IT TO ME FOR 20 YRS. A WHOLE 6 OZ TWICE A YEAR, HOW ADDICTING CAN THAT BE? HE SAID PAREGORIC IS AN (OPEID !) AND ONLY CERTAIN DOCTORS CAN PERSCRIBE OPIEDS, BUT HE IS LIKE 20 YRS OLD AND NEVER HEARD OF IT, WHICH I UNDERSTAND, BUT HE WAS GONNA LOOK UP. NEEDLESS TO SAY AFTER ALL THIS TIME ON THIS BLOG, AND NUMERIOUS DOCTORS, NOT BY CHOICE, I STILL CANT GET IT. I HAVE ASKED OUR LOCAL WALLMART PHARMASISTS IF THEY CARRY IT, TO JUST GET A RUDE LOOK AND REPLY, 'NO ITS OFF THE MARKET' THE END. I HAVE CALLED EVERY PHARMACY IN A 60 MILE RADIOUS ( I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY ) TO NO AVAIL. AND AS FOR THAT TINITURE, TO RISKEY FOR ME. IM ABOUT READY TO GIVE UP, AND IM USUALLY NOT A QUITER. Can be bought at Sam's club but you will need to hand carry the script. I've been back on the drug since the end of Nov 2012. i would think any large pharmacy would be able to get it for you.

Betty, thank you for your concern, I have been this post since way back. I actually originally called the manuf, in new York to find out whats up. According to the manf. the FDA stoped the manufacturing. I have also emailed the AMA American medical asso. to find out what the problem is. I don't want pills, why when this helps with just a tsp . I live in s/e Ohio Cambridge. The wallmart down here wont get it. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist but I cant get in till Dec. lol go figure.but I have been fighting this with the rest of you's , maybe I will send this site to my Doc, too much to print out. Ill keep everybody up to date, love ya all, Laura

I too thank you for your info, Trininus, but do 2nd Laura's question...please believe I am just a "neighbor" that is honestly questioning/opinionating from a layperson's mind...OK...thank God, I am middle class, but through ex employer do have insurance (could I afford my RX coverage on my own? At 69, and on Medicare (& thanks to...the good times when employers offered supplemental insurance to their retired employees, do have coverage for Paregoric through my Dr)...but (as usual), I digress...question: could I trust the Paregoric I order through the mail? Is it legal to purchase it? Pls allow me to repeat: if I DIDN'T have insurance, my mind may be thinking along different lines, but...well, I guess the legality of purchasing it from another country comes to mind here too...but then, diarrhea (and a bad cough caused from whatever) is not fun to have, chronically, either...appreciate your input o this? Thanks~
