What Is The Best Generic Of Lamictal? (Page 3)
UpdatedI've been taking the generic for Lamictal for about five years. Recently I've been feeling different at about the beginning of the year. I use to take the white ones but now I am taking a generic by Taro. What is the best generic for this drug? I never really payed any attention until I started getting this crazy migraines. If anyone has any insights it would be much appreciated.
Re: Cassie (# 39)
My pharmacy got in a bottle of Teva for me today. Now the pharmacy can order it, so it’s no longer backordered here. But, I’m afraid there will be another backorder situation next month when I need more. This is very unsettling and I still can’t get an answer from Teva as to why this happened. Does anyone know what caused the backorder?
Re: Connie (# 41)
So glad to hear it's definitely available again! I suspect that what caused the backorder is that in December Teva cut 14,000 jobs worldwide, and then there was a strike - that could have caused a lot of shifting around of jobs, etc. Hopefully it won't happen again...unfortunately, these backorders can happen with any of our medications for multiple reasons...let's just enjoy our Teva Lamotrigine while it lasts!
Re: Cassie (# 42)
It’s definitely a good thing. I felt better when I saw all the Teva bottles today. What’s odd is that when I contacted US Dept of Health, there was a backorder and when US DEPT Health contacted Teva, Teva told them there has not been any backorder and things were shipping normal.
Re: Neller (# 11)
I have been taking the new generic Lamictal by Cipla for 5 days. The last four nights I have had insomnia really bad. When I finally get to sleep, I constantly wake up, tossing and turning. I am lucky to get 4 hours of sleep. Anyone else have this problems with Cipla.
Re: Teresa (# 44)
I’ve tried Cipla and it made my symptoms worse. I called my insurance company and simply told them I had an allergic reaction to it. Then filled script with another manufacturer like Teva. Teva is the best generic, in my opinion.
Re: Connie (# 45)
I have been having the same problem since my mail order pharmacy/benefit provider switched to Cipla. Waking up after an hour or two of sleep, then tossing and turning for two hours before falling back to sleep again if I’m able to at all.
I’ve also been having problems with increasing levels of paranoid anxiety, something I had not experienced prior to the change in generics 4-5 months ago.
Re: Siobhan (# 46)
I suggest you get it filled at your local Walgreens. They carry TevaLamictal
Re: Connie (# 47)
I'm the opposite of everyone else, I've had trouble with Teva 25mg lamotrigine tablets. They work for a week or 2 and then the pills become completely inactive. I keep them in a bedroom, no humidity, temperature never goes below 64 or above 74, but it appears they expire so fast it's like taking a sugar pill. There is also a lot of pill dust in the Teva bottle which doesn't seem normal. I've tried a couple different generics and neither Taro nor any of the others have pill dust in the bottle. Has this happened to anyone else? How long are lamictal pills supposed to last before they become inactive? Also I've noticed at least with Cadista my scalp gets very itchy. I have mild psoriasis that doesn't usually bother me much, but when I take Cadista, the psoriasis flairs up. Are the any generics where this might not happen?
Re: fonzi (# 25)
I spoke with Teva today and the answer is no. They are unable to give a future date.
Re: Ty (# 13)
This was helpful because I've been on teva lamotrigine it's the only one that's worked and they went out of business .
I have been on Teva lamotragine for 10 years and it works great. Recently Walgreens gave me Cipla and I had a horrible reaction!!! I felt like I had been poisoned. I was able to find some left over Teva and made me feel normal right away. Walgreens said they have alembic, has anyone tried this? I'm scared to try another generic. What a mess!!
Re: Lisa (# 51)
Oh no. The same thing happened to me about 6 months ago. Walgreens ran out of Teva and gave me Cipla. It was horrible, my mood took a nose dive that month before I realized what was going on. I’ve taken taro, which Walgreens usually has too. You can fill your prescription from Europe for about $200. It’s more than a months supply. If Walgreens is out of my Teva, I’m going to fill my prescription from Europe or Canada and it will be brand Lamictal.
If you make less than $42,000/yr. GSK will give you LAMICTAL FOR FREE. They are the only company I have found that is so willing to help.
Re: Neller (# 7)
I was recently switched by Walgreens to the Teva Lamotragine, and felt a tad anxious, as a generic by them for another medication did not work for me. I called my doctor and he said it should be fine, do I started the Teva, and over the last 2 weeks, I have been having nausea, irritability, OCD issues, and am more down, and do not feel like doing much.
I just went to Walgreen to fill my Teva lamotrigene and she said they aren’t carrying it anymore and they can’t special order it for me. My doctor specifically says “Teva brand” on my script, but she said Teva is not even carrying it. Any other people with the same problem? I have no idea what else to do, other brands I have tried made me super manic....help!
Re: Linz (# 55)
What dosage are you looking for? There was a shortage a few months ago when it was backordered, but I personally haven't had any trouble getting it at Walgreens recently. I would suggest you call Teva directly, and find out if that's true - sometimes there is miscommunication between a pharmacy and their supplier. When you call this number, there's an option to speak to a representative - I have found them to be very helpful when I've called in the past. You can also find out if there's another pharmacy in your area that carries Teva. Teva only for me also!

Just got off the phone with Teva - they have DISCONTINUED LAMOTRIGINE! Period. No plans to ever manufacture it again. Can we please re-open discussion about other generic brands people take? Also, if anyone is ordering brand name from elsewhere, would you mind sharing where, and the cost? 200mg for me.
Hi there. I just called Teva, as well (7.26.18). I had the same convo as Hope (#57). My customer service rep didn't explicitly say it was discontinued, but she implied as much and did say there was not return date anticipated for its continued production.
She very much encouraged I consider the Extended Release version of Lamotrigine.
Anyone had any experience with ER Lamotrigine? I take it for Bipolar / mood regulation (not seizures).
I, like others, have had terrible experiences with generics, including and especially Zydus. I came to this thread because Walgreens around here are only offering a new one I hadn't heard of - Unichem.
Has anyone had experience with Unichem? I don't think I saw any comments on that brand above for that onr.
Re: Raechel (# 58)
Before considering extended release lamotrigine, be sure to check prices and if your insurance will cover it. It is more expensive that the lamotrigine tablets - probably why Teva discontinued the tablets, and now only manufacture the extended release. Also, the extended release doesn't come in a dosage higher than 300mg.
Re: Hope (# 59)
Thank you, Hope!! Good reminders. My insurance does cover XR and I take 2 200 (400) so, no problems there.
Would value any insight on anyone’s experience with it, though.
