Sorry guys, but I really believe J&J is giving us the runaround. Or, maybe some of the customer service people don't really know the correct answer. Someone says one thing and then someone else says something else.

I was dealing with the Consumer Care Center and there is no hint in their last letter to me that Visine LR will return. In fact, J&J gave me a phone number to call to discuss "other products" that might match my needs (other eye drops etc that are currently on the market).

No thanks.

Don't have a bottle here, now, to check ingredients, but have found various types of Visine in the Dollar Tree stores.

I'm currently using the B+L maximum redness relief eye drops. For me, they are certainly better than nothing, but one day, when I had very little sleep and my eyes were irritated, the drops were not nearly as effective. I have to be very careful to get enough sleep if I want to look halfway decent.

Visine LR works quickly. I can almost feel it working in my eyes. The oxymetazoline narrows the blood vessels. I can apply the Visine LR, rinse my face with water, look into the mirror and see my eyes instantly whiter.

Just found this stuff called Zoamet Eye Drops (Oxymetazoline). Its manufactured by East India Pharmaceutical Works Ltd.

HI VLR - Yes, someone mentioned those - I wonder how we can get them. Do they allow us to order them from the US?

Hi Irwin,

I looked up the ingredients for Clear Eyes Cooling Comfort, and it says:

Glycerin - 0.5% (Lubricant), Naphazoline hydrochloride - 0.03% (Redness Reliever), and the rest are inactive ingredients.

So, it's basically the same formula as B & L Redness Maximum Relief, but B & L contains Hypromellose 0.5% as the lubricant.

I ended up purchasing Opcon-A anyway, but I haven't tried it yet. I just want to make sure I cover all my bases. However, one major thing I have to do since our beloved Visine LR went away is wear minimal eye makeup and keep other irritants away from my eyes.

Opcon-A also contains less of the redness reliever Naphazoline Hydrochloride. It appears that 0.03% is the maximum amount to include in these eye drops.

Yesterday, I received a very nice, substantial letter from Walgreens. :-)

I'll just paraphrase:

Walgreens thanked me for my letter and acknowledged they had received an official response from Johnson & Johnson that Visine LR has been discontinued.

They said Johnson & Johnson recommends Visine Maximum Redness Relief Formula with "HYDROBLEND." It contains the redness relief ingredient "tetrahydrozoline HCl and 3 moisturizers that soothe, restore and protect eyes for up to 10 hours of comfort. They also said these eye drops are available at Walgreens and I will receive some samples from J&J. That was nice.

Lastly, the letter said the Walgreens team works diligently to bring their customers the best products, and they will take into consideration the oxymetazoline ingredient.

Very pleased again. A very well-written letter that was personally signed.

Has anyone here yet tried the Visine with Hydroblend?

Christina,

Since the other day, I have done a lot more reading about Visine with Hydroblend. Overwhelmingly bad reviews. It's surely a dud.

We need more people to write these companies. One or a few letters won't get us anywhere. It won't bring change.

I know a lot of bloggers here are good writers, so people, please write and let your voices be heard. Phone calls have never proved very effective for getting people to really listen to what you're saying.. People hear your words, but later on, they forget about what you said. A letter is proof and weightier. It's tangible.

This is just unbelievable!!! I'm reading all your comments with different methods and nothing is done about bringing Visine LR back or at least w/similar ingredients. Opcon A works well my eyes are not red but it stings a little. It's not the best lubricant, however takes the red out.

Ok I am also seeing Visine LR on eBay but it starts at $75 upwards of $95! Would anybody actually pay this much for a discontinued OTC product?!

What about Zoamet drops which are manufactured in India? It appears to contain Oxymetazoline as the active ingredient.

Prednisolone acetate ophthalmic suspension USP 1% eye drops are the best. They are available in 5 ml. or 10 ml. bottles by prescription only.

I have been using them for over a decade on an "as-needed" basis. It use to cost $5 per bottle, but for some reason the price jumped to $80 per bottle over the last 3 years. I get mine at the Costco or Target pharmacy.

Hi Gregmech26,

That's great and all, but I'll bet a lot of us here and out in "unemployment land" cannot afford to purchase eye drops for $80. Yikes!

Unfortunately, I believe many of these companies are taking advantage of folks because they can... and it is absolutely ridiculous. Low integrity and a lot of greed.

Rick... can you please share how you mixed the nose spray and artificial tears? I'm concerned about contaminating the mixture. Thanks

All I want to say (for myself) is I don't mind if an eye drops comes from a foreign country, because much of what we have in the United States is made elsewhere. However, I am concerned about the company. Can I trust it? Is it reputable? Does it follow strict guidelines and standards? I know that well-known companies like Walmart, Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Bayer, etc are not going to support or put their good name behind something that's going to harm us.

I'm really, really suspicious of folks nowadays. With the economy so bad, people are scamming left and right.

I wouldn't put my SSN on anything like that.

Hi Cindy,

Believe me, I have been strongly tempted to make my own eye drops too. My eye drops choice after Visine LR is also B+L Advanced Eye Relief (aka Redness Maximum Relief). I bought one bottle of Opcon-A and it contains even less of the Naphazoline redness reliever than Advanced Eye Relief. And though I don't really need a lubricant, I can actually tell that my eyes feel a bit more comfortable after using Advanced Eye Relief. Opcon-A is sans a lubricant and it sometimes produces a very light stinging or tingling sensation in my eyes.

For some reason, if I follow the crowd and do something risky, whatever can go wrong, WILL go wrong. In other words, I'd probably be the one person here to get an infection and ruin my eyes. Things like that have happened to me all my life, so that's another reason why I am so careful and leery. I've learned that I just can't do what a lot of people do.

Hi Rhonda,

I giggled at what you stated. So true! It's just probably not a good idea to start experimenting.

Juank, thank you so much for the info. Perhaps I'll try ordering Zoamet as you and others seem to have pretty good luck.

This is crazy. I was hoping by now we would see a new oxymetazoline product. Just when I started to panic over the discontinuation of Ocuclear many years ago, it seemed like Visine L.R. suddenly appeared on the shelves in it's place.
