Going to start it tomorrow. Anyone else taking it, and if so, how do you like it?

Thanks!

According to the SSRI literature, there is nothing chemically about this class of med that creates weight gain. What happens is some people get a vorcious appetite, hunger pangs, or, when people feel better, they eat more. Sometimes, the effect is that people get lazier and don't exercise.
All of this can be fixed by really watching the food intake and at least walk after meals, to burn off calories and to increase metabolism to more calories to be burned off later.

I have been on this drug since May and no weight gain issue at all. Good luck

donna, thanks for your kind words. I have been on 20 mg for about 3 months now. I had about a 5 pound weight gain as i was ramping up, but it really set in when i was trying going from 20-40 mg. I exercise no less, and my eating patterns have NOT changed. If you read on line, A LOT of people have gained 40 pounds on this! It definitely is a reality....I just wish I knew of how someone weaned themselves off of it. I noticed nothing within the first month or so, it was after i went on maintenance, and the fact taht i've done weight watchers and jenny craig, both for at least a month, and couldn't get off more than 3 pounds! Last year, I lost 15 pounds over 3 months, but this year, on vii, nothing is working... thanks to all

TO KROSTER ! I, too, am menopausal( 3 years into it). and was sick all the time ! Drs continued to put me on antidepressants for my symptoms which included fatigue, anxiety, depression, shaking, mood swings, nausea and dizziness, headaches, then most recently sweating and flashes which I did not have before....No antidepressant helped me at all, except for gaining weight...luckily, I am not a heavy person to begin with... I have been on cymbalta, celexa, prozac, and more, the last being Viibryd, which I swear, put me into the gutter, got more depressed than ever ! ...Finally, I deciced to see one more doc, my ob/gyn who suggested low dose HRT..(hormone replacement).,,I was terrified to try, totally against it, but figured I could not feel any worse, so I decided to try it with VERY low expectations...However; FOUR DAYS into it, yes, four days, I began to have energy, no more shaking, anxiety was better, and depression COMPLETELY went away.. I could not believe it !! I STILL CAN'T !! I am now on my second month dose and I feel like a brand new woman, no side effects whatsoever, no weight gain, still sweating a bit, but not like before...just letting you know that hormones can do a lot more damage and cause a lot more symptoms than you might think ! I am 55, and feeling wonderful !! Please talk to you OB/GYN... I am sorry I did not go sooner... Hope this helps ! Good luck !

Jenna, thank you so much. Believe it or not, i had all the symptoms you described. Was fatigued, sick, hot flashes, etc., vii really helped me. It was VERY unfortunate that i had the weight gain. However, with that being said, i have heard horrid things about HRT, I could've done that a long time ago. Most people and docs have told me stay away from it, long term affects? was any of this mentioned to you? how did you wean off the vii? how long were you on it? thanks!!!

Hi Kroster....I, too, heard and read horror stories about HRT...I saw my regular Dr:s nurse practitioner the day after seeing my ob/gyn for her opinion. I needed a second opinion..I was that afraid !...She spent 45 min with my fiancee and me and agreed with my ob/gyn that the benefits outweighted the risks. I also researched it thoroughly, that is how scared I was to take it...(still can't believe I am, but I LOVE this stuff !) I was only on viibryd for 10 days, starting taking after taking cymbalta a few months which gave me many side effects, one being the weight gain even though I ate very little because I had no appetite ! I am glad the Viibryd helped you, but still think you might want to consider this..My sister is an RN and she kept insisting that I see my OB/gyn Doc...and think about trying HRT..I would not because I was actually afraid that he might suggest HRT and I did not even want to hear the word HRT ! Sick, huh ?? ...Then again, have heard lots of horror stories about antidepressants, and weaning off the cymbalta was not fun ! Never again will I take an antidepressant, I can honestly say that ! but that is me...Viibryd and prozac were by far the worst for me....I became SEVERELY depressed while on them almost immediately, not no much on the cymbalta or paxil...oh yeah, took that one too ! Please let me know how you are doing or if you have any more questions !!

Hi Kroster...forget to mention. I did ask about long term affects and was told that I should be able to stay on for 4 years andif I did not have bothersome side effects then NOT TO WORRY !! I am on the losest dose available, and my sister, the RN, who is one year older, is on the HIGHEST dose available, her menopause was that bad...more issues with not sleeping all night and constant hot flashes during the day... She has been on for 4 years now...Now, I am the one telling her to wean off or lower it....She is very healthy, no problems and looks great ! I am totally sold !! LOL

Interesting. Okay, well, I know my Ob-gyn last year in June wanted to start me on HRT, but I said no. Hopefully I didn't make a huge mistake. Because it was 9 months later when I finally went on vii but had been sick twice, and had mono once too! How did you come off the cymbalta or paxil, etc.? That's what I am trying to do, and my family doc didn't know a lot as he was going to prescribe me 5 mg tablets to help with weaning me off, but they don't make 5 mg tablets. So pharmacist said to go from 20 (my current dose) to 10, and take 10 mg for about 2 weeks, and then go to 0? Is that how you weaned off of it or probably you could just stop it as you weren't on it for long. thanks!

Morning Kroster ! I weaned off the cymbalta, (was on 30 mgs once a day ) by at first I was trying to take every other day...then I called my Dr. and told him I wanted to go off..He told me to take the capsule and empty halfway and take that dose for a few days, then, empty again to 1/4 dose and take that for a few days and then stop..My fiancee did this for me. He just eyed the amount and got as close as he could...The paxil I really don't remember.. I think I took that every other day for about a week, then every 2 days for 5 days, then every 3 days...and so on..did not have an issue getting off the paxil but the cymbalta was a little tough but not that bad, a few body and brain zaps at worst...I was only on the Viibryd for 10 days, the Dr. had me cut the dose in half to 5 mgs..I ended up in the hospital cuz of the viibryd..that stuff make me feel like I was going crazy... I was in there for 5 days ! Never been in a hospital before for depression....I always thought I was a sane and confident person. While on antidepressants, I felt I was a hypochodriac and just plain going crazy...SO happy to be off them ! This is just my story Kroster, I, too, refused HRT 3 yrs back !!!I was not getting hot flashes then so I figured why bother ! I also was just too darn afraid....I wish I could talk to you ! Whoever reads this, please understand that I do know that antidepressants work for some of you and I think that is great, just trying to point out to Kroster and other woman that menopause CAN give you a lot of depression symptoms, physical and emotional ! I am so angry that none of the other doctors including a neurologist, my regular Dr, my psychiatrist, and even Drs at the ER..( was there twice with severe stomach issues from Viibryd) mentioned that my hormones may be causing a lot of my issues...well, come to find out they were..My sister was correct... I should mention that I also contacted lots of woman (menopause age) friends from High School, etc. only to find out MANY of them take HRT with no side effects.. I never knew !! I feel now I made the right decision.. I cannot express to you how much of a difference it has made...Both Drs I saw, my Ob/gyn and nurse practitioner both said I should have a sense of "well being" and I would know within 2 weeks...It took 4 days to start working ! I again, did not hold out much hope but was pleasantly surprised... I have a wonderful man, 3 children, my family and friends who ALL notice a HUGE difference in me and are so happy that I am the feeling the way I felt most of my life, healthy and happy ! I am very fortunate for all the support I have been given ! Let me know what you decide Kroster...It is worth a shot...get a couple opinions and tell the docs my story ! Busy weekend...and I am loving that I can enjoy it ! Please keep in touch !!

I understand the discussion initially involved Viibryd with menopause and HRT but seems to have gone off track. Please continue HRT and related symptoms/effects in the appropriate forums if they are not related to your Vii usage. Thank you!

I am on day 2 of 20, I was on 15 mg Viibryd for 4 days and now ramped up to 20. MOST of my brain zaps have worn off after 10 days off the Cymbalta. My son is complaining I am majorly crabby, I said "duh, I am switching meds!" That should be a given. I also should mention he is fifteen, and likes to push my buttons after I tell him to leave me alone, say no to something, or he promises not to complain about chores but whines when it is time to do them, so yes, I have been snappish with him in THOSE situations. I have been edgier for sure with my daughter and she hasn't warranted the snapping as much, so I am very consciously journaling to keep track of symptoms as I see my counselor in another week to evaluate my depression and anxiety levels.

I am very glad the Cymbalta effects wore off for the most part. That was a great drug while it maintained my depression, but since it wore off and I weaned, the weaning was awful. I still think it was worth it for having felt "well" for the most part, or better than I would have, for so long under stressful situations.

I always have alot on my plate in life. To those of you who don't like the weight gain, have you journaled your weight gain, eating habits, and exercise regime? Many of us reach a plateau and don't realize we need to ramp up the intensity of our workouts. I highly recommend SparkPeople.com, as it is FREE and you get to participate with entering your eating and such as much or as little as you want, but I love that you are accountable to others that cheer you on to keep the weight off or lose it. I am already 50-60lbs overweight and have been for years, so ten pounds doesn't bother me much. I have actually started feeling well enough to exercise, just a long walk, but much more than I was doing before. I also have played Just Dance on Wii with the kids, which breaks a sweat pretty quickly. Yoga is great (modified for me, I'm not limber) for stretching and relaxing. Sometimes, breathing exercises and stretching together can reduce stress and headaches.

Many of us (I know I know, not YOU! LOL) are so quick to blame the new drug and not look at our other lifestyle habits. If the drug is making something worse that ALREADY EXISTED, don't you think that is a sign to instead of blaming the drug, to look at other areas of your life/health that might/do need to be adjusted?

Okay, off my soapbox, but in my opinion, our bodies sometimes are latent about reacting to something that has gone on in the past and we've kept in our mind. If a drug brings about chemical relief in the brain, the body might be responding the only way it knows how, and it can take a month or more to adjust back.

My 20 mg of Viibryd seems to be doing well. I am kind of at a point where I am back to being a bit ambivilant (that is GOOD for me) vs depressed and don't want to do anything. I am riding that fence/horse right inbetween wanting to get up and not wanting to do anything, but feeling a slight push. I am able to function, albiet slowly, but getting more done in my house in preparation for school and upcoming events around our place.

I know I am not at a point where I can safely say I am "good to go", because I am not. I have had no side effects from Viibryd other than looser stools, but keep in mind that I have Irritable Bowl (IBS) and am lactose intolerant and don't take meds for that, so looser is subjective as I don't track my diet closely right now.

I do have a "slight" headache daily, but again have neck issues and need to see the chiro so that could be the problem there. Stretching and activity has helped with that.

The anxiety I was having has mostly receded, and the snappishness/irritability I am willing to deal with as I feel better overall. I think it is a great exercise in mental self control and behavior examination to be made to think before I act impulsively. My whole all around life can only be better for that in the long run LOL.

I've had some very stressful stuff happen this week so I think overall it's been handled with more grace than usual when not on a working anti-depressant as I am still getting other stuff done. That is the big plus for me.

Hope that helps someone.

Jenna, THANKS! Wow that was great. What HRT are you on and what dose? I may give it a try, esp. if I get weaned off of vii, and I'm still having menopause issues. Let me know, thanks :O)
