Very High Testosterone
UpdatedMy recent blood work revealed an exceptionally high level of testosterone (1600 ng/dl). My doctor's office requested that I call and reveal whether I am supplementing. In fact, I'm not. That is 160% higher than the highest natural level my doctor has encountered. I'm 35yrs old and weigh 150lbs. I was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 30.
Behaviorally, I fit the general expectation of a male with high testosterone who's conflicted about expressing it. I engage in behaviors that are risky, dominance seeking, and aggressive. I'm easily provoked and prodded. I probably drink more than I should. I self medicate to be more relaxed, but I'm considering seeking therapy. I don't smoke. I also hold a PhD in Biology with a highly competitive resume (CV) but am also a high school dropout, am a former USMC infantry/antiterrorism squad leader with a sparkling record. I interrupt others at will, but apologize after I'm finished. I would do my best to be a pacifist, if I didn't always feel that I am willing to be unimaginably overwhelming. I'm usually described as very chill or very intense; most often very intense.
I would love to not be so intense/aggressive/domineering, but I am capable of acting that way regardless of my situation. I can always dig down and release my inner A-hole. I have a stable life, no criminal record, though I've fought plenty and enjoy combat arts. I have no fidelity issues and my finances are in order. My wife thinks I'm "Bat s*** crazy." But, I'm hardworking, devoted, liked (I think, lol), humorous, confident, thoughtful, pensive, and successful. I wear cardigans but have a tattoo on my inner lip. I would love to be like Mr. Rogers, but I'm like Tyler Durden about 95% of the time.
So, back to my testosterone levels. Does anyone have any thoughts on this (natural) level? E.g., what percentile it might be in, what might be a reasonable cause, whether psychological therapy might help my aggression or whether a chemical route might be a better answer. Without treating the actual hormone imbalance, I feel like I'm simply covering up a tremendous willingness to react overwhelmingly to any perceived challenge or challenger (including a therapist). I'd like to be rid of all that discomfort, aggression, and paranoia.

Hello, Mr.Rogers! How are you?
You stated that you self-medicate, so it might be best to take a look at what you're medicating with. There has to be something feeding it to make your testosterone soar that high.
From the description you gave of yourself, you actually sound like you're bipolar. Have you ever consulted a psych?
Hi back,
Thank you, for responding. First, my apologies. By "self-medicate", I mean that I'll drink wine to relax. I don't binge. For the last few weeks, the only caffeine I have had is that contained in a regular cup of Earl Grey, in the morning. I don't like stimulants really, and have never had a problem with substance abuse. I often do everything I can to slow down. As in the fantastic Omar Sharif classic "Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du coran", I really think that "Slowness is the key to happiness". Unfortunately, I'm the same person who once belonged to an outfit where the motto was "Speed, intensity, violence of action." And of course, I can go from 0 to maniacal in an instant. Thankfully, I have very healthy blood pressure and practice biofeedback (former military tricks to lower the pulse).
However, this post is about a very high testosterone level and I am neither interested in diagnosing away my personality (though I'm sure there's a lot there to examine) or in being flagged for going off topic. Of course, my family doctor and endocrinologist know all about all of this and I have great access to proper medical care.
I have considered seeing a therapist, simply because I'm curious and it sounds healthy. However, I'm more interested to know (for the purposes of this post) what anyone might know at all about such a high naturally occurring testosterone level.
I find it all very interesting but hopefully key to understanding more about myself. Thanks you, again, for your response.
Re: MrRogers (# 2)
This post is very old. Maybe the originator can chime in on their progress. Testosterone normal ranges are somewhat arbitrarily set by labs. They take a bunch of healthy men, check their testosterone levels, and guesstimate what is normal. That is why it varies a little by what lab you go to. You might just be an outlier. The high testosterone sounds like it is a part of your personality and how you behave. But it could be normal. Or there could be an underlying condition that causes it. My pharmacist mentioned how his testosterone for a while was high naturally. And doctors weren't able to find a cause. So it can happen. But it sounds like yours has always been that way. Definitely need to see a psychiatrist to see if there is an underlying condition, or if there isn't, they should have ways to help you deal with some of the issues it causes. Too me you didn't sound bi-polar at all. An endocrinologist may be able to help but from my experience, many might not know or bother to try to find the underlying cause if it is a condition that people don't have that often. But you never know till you try. Also a urologist I think, some specialize in reproductive health and I would guess high testosterone may be in that category. There are clinics that specialize in testosterone therapy, but they should also know about hight testosterone. Just need to be sure it's not one of those just looking to sell their products to people.
