Can Trazadone be used to treat a chronic cough like amitriptyline?

Based on my research Trazodone is indicated for:
Clinical depression with or without anxiety. Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, to aid in sleeping. Control of nightmares or other sleep disturbances. Amitriptyline can also be used as a sleeping aid in small doses. I did not know either of them had an off label use for chronic cough? correct me if I'm wrong, but I personally haven't seen anything stating otherwise.

That said, I don't think it is specifically indicated to help with coughing; but if you personally find that it has been working for you then I'd advise you to contact your doctor who prescribed it, to give you the OK to continue using it for that.

I take trazadone to help me sleep at night. I now have a cough, that comes and goes. I am spitting up mucas that is clear but stringy, is this a side effect of the drug?

Hi Cat,

My findings show that the answer to your question is no; however some of the possible side effects are: dry mouth, vomiting, or a bad taste in your mouth. So although it doesn't specifically state what you may be going through, these could indirectly be related to the clear stringy mucus.

Other more serious related side effects could include: chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or hoarseness. This is not a full list of side effects, but you can view this and more in the link below if you require further information:

Also, if you are experiencing any of the above side effects or if the current condition gets worse over time I would definitely recommend contacting your doctor to see what's going on or if you need to switch medications.
