Topamax And Eye Twitching (Page 4) (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi, I have been using Topamax for depression for 12 months and must admit that it has been very sucessful. The one major draw back is that I have developed a very annoying eye twitch. It only affects one eye, but is very noticeable. I was taking 100 mg twice a day, but have decreased it to 100 mg daily. The twitch has decreased somewhat, and I realize that I now have to come off this drug completely to get rid of the twitch entirely.
Has anyone else experienced this problem. I read 1 other reader, but are there more?
Ok, I have now completely tapered off Topamax after being on it for 6 years. Guess what? No eye twitching at all! It is such a shame because this drug quite literally saved my life from the most gut wrenchingly awful migraines. However, I am now going to take Relpax when I get a migraine because I simply couldn't live with an eye twitch that occured every day.
My eyes ...both or one......either upper or lower lids have been twitching for about
15 years and although I am SO grateful I no longer get migraines a few times a week...I am so sick of the twitching.I wear dark glasses most of the time. The eye specialist at the eye institute said said it couldnt possibly be Topomax!! Thank goodness I decided to search! I do not EVER want another migrain and still get daily headaches........soooooooo what to do????
Yes I took Topamax for about 8 months ( I took Topiramate). I got the worse eye twitch only in one eye. It got worse and worse. I saw others had that too so I took myself off of it. I had to get Botox shots for a year in that eye muscle to make the twitch stop. I had tried everything else first: rest, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and all the home remedies. Nothing worked but Botox shots. The doctor was clueless about this side effect.
I tried everything-- potassium, calcium, magnesium, more rest, told the dr, saw a neurologist. I took myself off the medicine. I finally had to get Botox shots for a year to make the twitch stop!! It worked perfectly.
I have been on Topamax (topiramate) since the days when it was only available as a name brand script. It has ALWAYS caused a twitch below one or both of my eyes. It is more pronounced when I'm more tired. In fact, when I was on the name brand, my doc told me it was probably because I was not getting enough sleep (which I wasn't, but what else is new?? LOL). Since I have been on Topamax, the generic form and only 50mg, I am back to the under eye spasms. Most people don't notice it or at least don't ask about it.
Once it changes my taste for carbonated soda - turning it to tasting like metal - and makes my lips/face feel strangely tingly, then I'll get a little more stressed. Right now, it's not quite gotten my migraines under control but I'm finding I've got tension/stress headaches more than migraines these days.
It's been a little while since I last posted on this thread. It took me a long time to completely wean off Topamax, even though I knew it was the cause of my 24/7 eye twitch. I am now on Candesartan after trying Relpax for a few months and finding I just needed too much of it. The problem I had with weaning off Topamax was the weight issue. I started to gain weight as soon as I came off it. For that reason, I continued taking 25mg daily along with my Relpax as needed because 25mg of Topamax is not going to prevent migraines, but it did seem to help with the weight issue. Anyway, the twitch set in again even at the 25mg dose, so I just had to bite the bullet and come off it completely. This time, my weight seems stable. Maybe it's the Candesartan! If I have one piece of advice about Topamax, it's that it is very hard to come off. My side effects started 5 years after starting Topamax and I really thought I was developing a neorological disorder due to the 24 hour a day eye twitching and also a tremor in my left hand and different parts of my body. All side effects have disappeared off Topamax.
I have been having Eye Twitches more and more lately maybe five per two hours, I have been taking Topamax for my seizures for about two and a half years before that I was on some other medication for some time.
I have been having seizures for about 11 years I was diagnosed at the age for 4.
I started topiramate for migraine 6 weeks ago. Only able to take 25 mg developed really annoying eye twitches after 2 weeks they are constant. I have not been able to increase my dose which I was supposed to do every 2 weeks because of this and also terrible restless legs at night and indigestion. I fear I will have to come off these drugs which is a shame as my migraines have reduced greatly to about 1 per week. I was hoping that this was a side effect that would wear off but if anyrhing it seems to be getting worse
Hi I was wondering how you were getting on and whether you have persevered with thede drugs and if your eye twitching has improved at all or whether you have had to give up the drug. My twitching is driving ke mad at only 25 mg im holding on in the hope that it would reduce or even stop as my body got more used to the drug but unfortunately that doesnt seem to be happening for me
Great news - do you mind me asking how long did the twitching last?
About a month for me. I know some people say it lasted longer for them and others weren't bothered by it at all. I think if it continues to bother you then you should talk to your doctor about it and see what he or she can do for you. I do hope it stops for you soon though. This medicine has been wonderful for me. I have gone from 3-4 migraines per week to 4 in the last 3 months.
I too was getting 3 to 4 migraines a week and currently down to about one a week which is grest if only I could get rid of the annoying twitches! Ive akready had them about 7 weeks now and wont last much longer if they continue. Its such a shame as this is definitely the best result ive had from any medication which is why im so reluctant to give up on it
I just wanted to say I'm in the US I take the regular Topamax, my right eye has been twitching for three days non stop my feet go numb all the time, it just the meds. We should all stop taking them
What do you take now and does it work? Any side effects? Liz
I take 150 mg per day to prevent migraines and have the spasm in the muscle below the left eye. Years ago I took 250 mg per day and had it under the right eye. I weaned off Topamax then and it went away.
I take 150 mg to prevent migraines and have the twitching under the left eye all the time. Over the past 20 years, I weaned off topamax twice for about 9 months once and over a year nice and had migraines galore- up to 20+ per month, so the twitching is fine with me. Years ago it was under my right eye at a higher level.
I lost sight for 3-4 seconds yesterday while driving and it scared me to death! I'm on Trokendi Xr 100mg daily fit migraines. My sis in law said her friend went blind for a week until her sight came back when they stopped all her meds. I'm weaning off now. I'm getting Botox Thursday for migraines. I hope it works!!! This drug scares me!!
My daughter has the eye twitching, but as you said it's usually one eye at a time. It seems to start with anything but usually when she gets anxiety I think, and stress. Didn't have this until her seizures but started taking Topamax in June of 2016 this year obviously. I hope it goes away we will have to see..
I only had total of two doses of topiramate 25mg each and had redness both eyes and twitching of right eye! I stopped 36 hrs ago my eyes still twitching ! WHAT is the bestime remedy?
I was prescribed Topamax (Topimirate) for Emotion Regulation by my Psychiatrist about 6 months ago. I also have been on Remeron (Mirtazapine) since 2005 45mg and Wellbutrin (Buproprion) 150mg. The Topamax has been a Godsend and has helped me tremendously as I have several mental health diagnosis. I take 25mg in the morning and 50mg at night, the only side effect I got was pins and needles in my feet..which of course was dismissed. I was told to go to my Primary Care Doctor to see if my magnesium and blood work was okay and I did and was not deficient in anything. Then in October, Wellbutrin XL was increased from 150mg t0 300mg..and that's when I noticed muscle twitching/tics/spasms in my lower legs right before I would go to sleep. It was very annoying. Again..my concerns were dismissed, by Psychiatrist saying it was all in my head because I am going through alot of anxiety and stress. Then when I first would wake up..again twitching in both legs..then..the bottom of my left lip there would be one or two twitches..but only when lying down. But enough for concern. Then I could feel parts of my stomach spazaming. But only when lying down..and the deal breaker was when I felt a short spasm in my tongue. She lowered the Wellbutrin down to 150mg..now I feel depressed. Then today, my muscle under my right eye twitched for about 10 minutes. I don't know if it from Topamax or Wellbutrin. The twiches in my legs and stomach seem to have stopped. Its all very frightening..
